More seasons starting means more players per update. We start in Spain where two Duke players finally got to see some regular season action. Marty Pocius and Real Madrid ended up with the biggest winning margin of the weekend after an 88-70 win over Fuenlabrada. Marty started again and scored 7 points in 24 minutes while Rudy Fernandez scored 12 points coming off the bench. The leader for Fuenlabrada was the leading scorer for the weekend as Kirk Penney, the New Zealander who attended Wisconsin, scored 26 points in defeat. Tied for the 2nd highest scoring performance of the weekend was one Kyle Singler, who led Alicante to a very impressive 81-77 win over a strong Bilbao team. Kyle scored 23 points in 35 minutes (his team should use their bench more or they will be tired by the end of the season) on only 10 field goal attempts as he went 10 for 11 from the free throw line. Former Duquesne player Aaron Jackson led Bilbao with 15 points. Here are the box scores with some Spanish abbreviations:

The regular season also started in Lithuania and David McClure and Kedainiai had games on Friday and Saturday. On Friday the team lost to Juventus 75-70 as David came off the bench to score 9 points, grab 10 rebounds, and add 4 steals in 26 minutes. His strong early season efforts earned him a start on Saturday, but the team still lost to Rudupis 88-80. David scored 12 points in 34 minutes, knocking down a pair of threes. Here are the boxscores, in English, but surrounded by Lithuanian text:

Among ex-Duke women's basketball players, Jess Foley was a part of the start of the Women's National basketball league down in Australia. On Friday, her Townsville Fire team defeated the Bendigo Spirit 74-67. Jess had 14 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists in 32 minutes as she hit 3 3-pointers.

The season continued in France as Mistie Bass and Challes were in action against Lyon, which is where Krystal Thomas will play when she is able to make the trip over to start the season. She would have liked to be a part of this game as it went into overtime before Challes prevailed 77-74. Mistie led all scorers with 22 points in 37 minutes, only needing 9 field goal attempts. Meanwhile in the second tier, Carrem Gay continued her good season although her Toulouse team suffered their first loss to SI Graffenstade 65-58. Carrem led all scorers with 18 points and added 6 rebounds in 33 minutes. Here are the boxscores as always:

Bridgette Mitchell and Energa Torun faced a tough game against Wisla Can-Pack Krakow (the joy of sponsored names like Armani Jeans Milano) but they came up short 86-77. Bridgette led her team again with 19 points in 29 minutes. Her teammate Leah Metcalf, formerly of UNC, scored 17 and dished out 6 assists. Ex-Stanford star and New York Liberty player Nicole Powell had 4 points.

There will be plenty of midweek action as well for the next update.

Kyle had a slightly tougher second league game as his Alicante team faced off against a Cajasol Banca Civica team that they had defeated in preseason. Kyle ended up with 12 points and fouled out having only played 22 minutes in the 86-61 loss. His American teammate Lamont Barnes, formerly of Temple, scored 13 to lead the team while on the opposing team the ex-Hawaii player, Carl English from Canada, scored 25 points in only 19 minutes to lead all scorers and ex-Michigan State player Paul Davis added 12 points and 8 rebounds. How tough is the competition Kyle is playing compared to what Jon is playing? I am trying to figure out how impressed to be by Kyle's seemingly stellar play. I imagine this is how a Croatian feels trying to figure out the difference between Longwood and Gonzaga.

That's a very nice article Billy Dat.

Kyle is playing extremely tough competition. The ACB in Spain is pretty much the strongest one-country league outside of the NBA. There are some higher level competitions like the Euroleague and maybe something like the VTB United League or the Adriatic League would be stronger, but Kyle's two good games have come against last year's runners-up and another playoff-caliber team, so he is playing very well in the big games. His team was only a couple losses away from being relegated last season and frankly, most of his teammates are not all that good. Jon's competition is generally weaker in the Israeli League, but is plenty strong when he plays in the Euroleague and Adriatic League. His main competition is getting time and the ball ahead of his teammates, who are almost all far more accomplished professionals than he is. Jon will get a pretty good shot in domestic games because he does not count as a foreigner and I am sure that he will be able to fight for more time if he plays well.

Actually a lot of foreign basketball fans keep an eye on NCAA action because that tends to be where they get their American players from. Greek fans, for instance, know what Matt Howard brought to the table for Butler and are interested in seeing him play for Olympiakos. Maccabi Tel-Aviv fans have always been looking forward to their team making an offer to Jon.

    Jon's DNP on Thurs

Any idea why Jon didn't play on Thursday? I watched the game on ESPN3 and he warmed up with the team and at the half the announcers appeared to be talking about him (kept cutting the camera to the announcers and then to him in the layup lines) but ESPN3 plays music over the broadcast at the half so I have no idea what they were saying.

At this point Jon is the last man in the rotation, so he will generally be the last guy off the bench in the biggest games. I am hopeful that he will show what he can do during Israeli League games where he will get more time because of the limits on foreign players. Unfortunately his team just signed Keith Langford, who is an established Euroleague quality player so there might be even less time for him against the top opposition.

    Viewing Alert:
ESPN3 has two more Euroleague games listed for this week, both on Thursday at 2:45 Eastern. Olympiakos hosts Fenerbahce in a matchup that would be tasty in any sport given the underlying national rivalry. Marty Pocius and Real Madrid host the same Milan team that defeated Maccabi Tel Aviv the week before. Marty should play, so if you tune in he should be coming off the bench.

There was a lot of action over the last 3 days and we will start in Lithuania on Saturday where David McClure and Kedainiai faced off against powerhouse Lietuvos Rytas and lost 100-67 without much effort from the winners. David had a very good game as he got the start and led the team with 15 points and grabbed 9 rebounds to lead all players in 25 minutes of action. Tyrese Rice had 3 points and 5 assists in the win. Here is the boxscore with some Lithuanian:

Jon Scheyer and Maccabi Tel-Aviv returned to Adriatic League action Saturday against Bosnian team Siroki. It took the second quarter, but the team pulled away for an 84-60 win. The game was certainly more fun than the Duke one. A reverse Weekender seems like a fun idea. It's much better than this year's Thursday weekender, which is not what I think Pat Haden wanted when he insisted on the Northern California away game every year. Union Square was devoid of the right colors on that day. Hmm, if I drove down after work I would be there in plenty of time for the start of Gameday...

For fans of former ESPN hoop scribe, Chris Sheridan, he launched a new blog after splitting with the worldwide leader a few months ago and he's doing some Euroleague coverage. I liked the following call out from a recent piece:

"Teletovic’s 22.5 PPG is second in the Euroleague and his 21.5 is tops in Spain’s ACB. (Another familiar face on that Spanish list: Duke’s Kyle Singler, sitting pretty at number four with 19 per game for Lucentum Alicante.)"

That's a good blog, especially for some coverage on some of the foreign players there who may make the leap to the NBA sometime soon.

We have a pretty full update for the weekend.

In Ukraine, both former Duke players were in action on Friday with two wins. Daniel Ewing continued to dish out the assists as he had 5 points and 8 dimes in 32 minutes in an 88-81 win. DeMarcus Nelson came off the bench to deliver 8 points and 4 rebounds in 17 minutes in a 96-74 win.

    Jon Scheyer and Maccabi Tel Aviv had another Adriatic League game Saturday when they hosted Serbian team Partizan. Jon got some time off the bench but did not do much in 6 minutes of action in the 78-67 win. Jordan Farmar had 14 points and 7 assists to lead the charge in the win and ex-Virginia player Devin Smith added 12 points. Acie Law continued his struggles with only 7 points and 3 assists. Here is the boxscore:;

Here is the Euroleague ESPN3 viewing alert:
On tap this week are two more games. On Wednesday Zagreb hosts CSKA Moscow and on Thursday Emporio Armani Milan hosts Anadolu Efes. Both games are at 3:45 Eastern. As a reminder to anyone who watches sports from around the world, most countries ended Daylight Saving Time this morning so the time difference is shorter for a week.

Early Friday in Australia, Jess Foley and Townsville Fire continued their winning ways with an 86-74 win over Logan. Jess had 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists in 38 minutes.

Also Friday, Jasmine Thomas and Frisco Sika rolled out to a 105-64 win over VS Prague. Jasmine had 8 points and 7 rebounds in 21 minutes in the blowout. Here is the boxscore with some Czech:

Former Maryland player Laura Harper had 21 points and 10 rebounds in the loss as the team faced off against the Miller twins and Jayne Appel. Coco Miller led all scorers with 22 points and former Tulsa player Jillian Robbins added 19 points and 9 rebounds. Here is the boxscore mostly in Turkish:

I will be doing shorter more frequent updates this week for Euroleague action.

On Monday, there was plenty of action in Israel. Jon Scheyer and Maccabi Tel Aviv were stuck in a close game against Barak Netanya and came back for an 85-83 win. Jon came off the bench to play 6 minutes as David Bluthenthal had 14 points and 7 rebounds in the win. In the loss, former DII player Christian Burns had game-highs of 25 points and 8 rebounds, ex-Cal player Jerome Randle had 17 points and 8 assists, and ex-Miami player Brian Asbury added 18 points. Here is the write-up from the team:
    http://www.maccabi.co.il/News.asp?id...nguage=english

The NBA is not the only league with labor strife as Karima Christmas's season was delayed two weeks because the Israeli players were on strike over the increased allowance for foreign players. The season started anyway despite the strike continuing and some games were cancelled bcause they could not find a 5th player for each team to go along with the Americans. Karima's team Bnot Hasharon got to play and they beat Elitzur Netanya, 82-64, but they did not keep individual statistics. That is a continuing drama for us to track.

On Tuesday, Daniel Ewing and Azovmash faced off against defending champions Budivelnyk. The team came back late to make it close, but came up short 80-77. Daniel had 18 points and 6 assists in 37 minutes in the loss while ex-Miami sharpshooter Jack McClinton had 27 points in the win.

The first direct matchup between former Duke players will happen Thursday when Jon Scheyer and Maccabi Tel Aviv host Marty Pocius and Real Madrid. Jon may not be playing in the game, but they should get to have a bit of a reunion.

Here is a brief update on one-time Dukies who will not be regularly covered here:
Jamal Boykin is currently playing for Omonia in Cyprus.
Taylor King will play for London (Ontario) in the new league starting in Canada.
Eric Boateng is apparently playing in Greece.
