News about Austin and Mason hit this board several days after our last game. Granted they played a week longer than we did, but considering the approaching deadline I would have thought we'd have heard something more concrete by now.

We got news about Mason exploring his options on the Thursday following our Sunday loss, and we got first hints that Rivers would go on the Friday after our Sunday loss. So I don't think it's unreasonable that we haven't yet heard anything definitive as of Wednesday following a Sunday loss for the UNC guys.

We lost Friday, too, so add a couple days to that schedule. If only we had made it to Sunday to lose then...

Whoops, my bad. So it was almost a full week after our loss before we heard any word. I think it's completely reasonable to expect more than 2-3 days to go by before a news conference or press release for the UNC guys.

And apparently "news" has hit the IC boards already, several days after their last game. We didn't get anything "concrete" until Austin's official announcement, ten days after our season ended.

Well actually Austin started tweeting on the 18th. Call it hindsight for me to say the, "I'm going to prove everyone wrong." was proof but that's your call. The fact that he was very active on Twitter could also be seen as further proof that he was breaking with the team.

We didn't get anything on Mason until the 22nd, and that tidbit was posted by Greg Newton. After that things kind of went haywire as JWIll got involved and the board went back and forth over what is or isn't good journalism as several other news outlets started running stories on both Mason and Austin.

Well, sure, this could have been a sign of Austin's plans, but it's also a typical motivational tweet for him, very similar to one he tweeted in January (which includes the words "prove 'em wrong"). Whether or not he already knew he would enter the draft, I'm not sure we can conclude that he intended this particular tweet to send a message about his plans.

While I agree on a purely level-headed, logic based approach that you are correct, I have to admit (now that everything is said and done) that when I read that tweet from Austin I felt very, very, very strongly it was an indication he was out the door. Again, he may have not meant it in any such way. But darned if it didn't end up being a personally prophetic message in terms of what I was reading into it.

Best wishes to Austin in the NBA. Tear 'em up, kid, and represent Duke proudly!

    It is really hard

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I think that as Duke (or UNC) fans it is hard to keep perspective. The fact is, it is very hard to make it to the Final Four or to win the Title.

The Marshall, Henson, Barnes, Zeller group never made it to the Final Four -- in fact, only Zeller, as a little used Freshman, made it there at all. That is a huge amount of talent with a successful coach and ample resources, but no Final Four to show for it.

Duke had fours year of JJ and Shelden, both with jerseys in the rafters, but no title.

At the same time, when you least expect it, it all falls into place (eg 2010).

All of which is to say, as we look ahead to 2012 - 2013 and even seasons beyond, I will be expecting maximum effort and commitment and good sportsmanship, while hoping for additional firepower, good luck, wins in every game, as many daggers to UNC as possible, and a handful of great memories.

While we certainly had some disappointment this year, the Austin Rivers UNC game will not be forgotten for a long long time. I chose that to remember.

100% agree. We are very, very likely to be very, very good next year. Skeptical? Under the worst case scenario, we lose Mason, Curry, and others who might possibly be disgruntled with their place in the playing-time pecking order (let's say Dawkins and G, though this is purely hypothetical -- I have absolutely no reason to believe anyone is disgruntled, let alone would leave), and add nobody. That hypothetical worst-case leaves us with a seven man team that has Thornton, Cook and Sulu in the backcourt, and Kelly, Hairston, MP3 and Murphy in the frontcourt. I would be happy to root for that team all year long and suspect they would post an excellent record with some amazing moments for us to enjoy. All looks good to me.

    Thumbs up more likely scenario

Assuming we only get Rasheed, we will have him along with Seth, Tyler, Quinn and Andre in the backcourt. We should expect some growth in the play of Quinn and Tyler and Rasheed looks quite good, but we still have multiple guards with smaller stature and limited quickness to defend, stop penetration and blockout to assist with rebounding. Andre may make a jump his senior year, but that is a hope at this point since he hasn't shown much on the floor on many ocassions.

In the front court we will have Ryan, Marshall, Mason, Josh and possibly Alex. That is a solid group and probably nearly eqivalent to the group with Miles. Alex is also a likely contender at small forward along with Andre and Michael.

Unless we pick up Muhammed and/or Parker, I see next season's team as being equivalent to this years. Pretty good but not a final four team. What could be the primary difference would be a presence at small forward. It will be really interesting to see who the starters have in early November versus who stands out enough during the season to be the starters come tournament time.

    Updated attrition and addition table

    teams.JPG

I added the Painter, Desrosiers, Fields, and Gbinije transfers. Desrosiers and Painter are the big ones in terms of the effect they will have on their repsective teams. They both were getting significant PT. Painter was going to be a senior frontcourt player for the wolfpack.

You missed Matt Humphries leaving BC and Jacques Raymond leaving NC State. In additions, you ought to add Stacy Poole (a former top 50 prospect) who will be eligible at Ga tech after transferring in last year from Kentucky. Also, Jeff Peterson leaving FSU (he was a grad student transfer).

You might also want to add 6-9 Robert Polk a juco all-American at FSU.

And since you include Duke's redshirts, you ought to include medical redshirts such as 6-3 Leslie McDonald at UNC, 7-0 Jordan Vandenberg at NC State and 6-7 Terrence Shannon at FSU.

Thanks OF. I missed quite a bit there. BC losing Humphries is big. Poole was a big name and should give GT another athlete but I'm not expecting Poole to have much of an impact on the Wreck one way or another. Polk totally changes my thinking on FSU. I was gonna have them fall pretty good with all they lost but that is a big get for them.

    like, Davis

My thanks to whereinthehellami for these updates.

Check out this interesting piece on Heels next season.

If Simmons is actually a beast around the basket, I will be wishing him a speedy transfer to UCLA.

Can't wait to see Like Davis in action.

Unless there is an incoming or returning Heel whose name is Like Davis, in which case I can't wait to see him in action. I am aware that his cousin, Luke, transferred in last year as a walk-on and will be a backup PG. I'll just guess that the internet will soon be abuzz with stories about Like's game.

On the red-shirt front at VA Tech J T Thompson and I believe Allen Chaney who has the heart problem too were medical red-shirts last year.

However bot have graduated and have chosen to go elsewhere prior to Seth getting fired, so an in and an out that does not affect what the chart is trying to portray.

Thompson a 6'6" 225 SF defensive specialist is wanting to get closer to his daughter who lives in Monroe NC near Charlotte. That's about 3 hours from Duke, so closer than Blacksburg but not exactly UNC-Charlotte or Davidson an hour away either.
