Our weekend update starts Saturday in Ukraine, where we had our first direct battle between two Duke players with Donetsk even giving DeMarcus Nelson a start in this special matchup with Daniel Ewing and Azovmash. In Montenegro on Saturday, Jon Scheyer earned a spot on the bench after he did not dress for the last Euroleague game as Maccabi Tel Aviv faced Buducnost. The game was one of closest in Adriatic League play for Maccabi Tel Aviv and Jon did not end up playing in the 81-69 win. The American trio of Shawn James, Jordan Farmar, and Devin Smith led the way in the victory with 15, 14, and 13 points respectively. In the loss, recent draftee Nikola Vucevic had 13 points and 5 rebounds. Here is the boxscore:

Sunday action in Spain featured both Duke players. In Malaga, Real Madrid defeated Unicaja 96-80 as Marty Pocius had a quiet game playing 9 minutes and picking up 3 fouls as the refs in Spain have not gotten the memo that Marty doesn't foul. Jaycee Carroll continues his hot streak with 18 points off the bench and Rudy Fernandez added 18 points in the win as ex-Niagara player Tremmell Darden had 17 points in the loss. Kyle Singler and Lucentum Alicante put up another good fight against a Euroleague team, but fell 65-55 in their visit to Caja Laboral. Now that another European competition has thrown in even more midweek games, I will cut down on the number of games covered to ones involving Duke players and the two Euroleague competitions so these "mini" updates do not get out of control.

The first news of the day is that DeMarcus Nelson has been let go by his team in Ukraine and he has already found a new home back with his last team, Cholet in France. He should be available to play this weekend, but he was unable to suit up for today's second-tier European competition Eurocup game when his team hosted Khimki from Russia. Without him, the team lost 75-63 with former Miami player Robert Hite scoring 10 points in the loss and Timofey Mozgov delivering 21 points in the win. Here is that boxscore:
    http://www.eurocupbasketball.com/ule...ame?gamecode=4

Also in Eurocup action, Daniel Ewing and Azovmash hosted French team Le Mans and won a close one 79-76. Daniel had game highs of 21 points and 7 assists in 33 minutes while his American running mates Ricky Minard and Joe Crispin added 13 and 11 points respectively and former NBA player Oleksiy Pecherov had 20 points and 8 rebounds. In the loss, ex-Bradley player Marcellus Sommerville had 16 points, ex-Washington State player Taylor Rochestie had 15 points, ex-Gonzaga player JP Batista had 12 points and 6 rebounds, and ex-Pepperdine player Alex Acker had 12 points and 6 assists. Here is that boxscore:
    http://www.eurocupbasketball.com/ule...me?gamecode=11

Chante Black's results in China continue to be a bit hard to come by. She appears to have missed Saturday's 83-82 win over Bayi, but she had 26 points and 15 rebounds in 36 minutes in a 107-79 defeat to Shenyang.

While labor troubles have only intensified in the NBA, in Israel the local players finally reached an agreement and the season started on Monday. Karima Christmas and Bnot Hasharon were defeated by Ramat Hasharon 65-58. Karima had 14 points and 11 rebounds in 37 minutes, ex-UNC player Italee Lucas had 17 points and 6 rebounds, UConn and Phoenix Mercury player Ketia Swanier had 11 points, and Virginia Tech and Washington Mystics player Kerri Gardin had 8 points and 13 rebounds. In the win, ex-Middle Tennessee star Alysha Clark had 13 points and 13 rebounds, Connecticut Sun and ex-UNC player Jessica Breland had 11 points, Georgia and San Antonio Silver Stars player Porsha Phillips had 15 points and 12 rebounds, and ex-Miami player Maurita Reid had 18 points.

On the other side, another one of Coach P's former players, Kalisha Keane, recorded 19 points and 8 rebounds and former Syracuse player Julie McBride added 11 points.

In other action on the day, Spain's Ros Casares won with a huge 4th quarter comeback in a relatively low-scoring 60-52 game over Russia's UMMC Ekaterinburg considering the amount of star power on display. Sancho Lyttle had 12 points and 11 rebounds in the win, while only Yelena Leuchanka was in double figures in the loss. In France, Lattes Montpellier defeated Slovakian team Good Angels Kosice 83-65 in a game that had little output from the American players involved. Spanish

Turkish team Fenerbahce defeated Russian outfit Nadezhda 84-72 as 19 points and 6 assists from Penny Taylor and 18 points and 10 rebounds from Angel McCoughtry was enough despite 22 points and 8 rebounds from Katie Douglas and 18 points and 8 rebounds from Rebekkah Brunson. Polish side Polkowice defeated French outfit Tarbes 78-52 behind 6 points and 9 assists from ex-Virginia player Sharnee Zoll and 11 points from ex-Liberty player Megan Frazee. Thabo Sefolosha had 14 points and 7 rebounds in the win while ex-Oregon player Maarten Leunen had 11 points and 6 rebounds in the loss and ex-Ohio State player David Lighty had his first solid Euroleague effort with 9 points. An all-Spanish affair saw the newly-sponsored and re-branded Bilbao team Gescrap (the key in the name is to focus on the "scrap" part that shows that it is a sanitation company and not to break up the word along the most obvious sylablles) defeat Caja Laboral 89-84 as ex-West Virginia player D'Or Fischer had 10 points and 7 rebounds in the win and Kevin Seraphin had 9 points and 6 rebounds in the loss. Croatian team Zagreb stole a narrow 80-78 win over Lithuanian team Zalgiris Kaunas as ex-Gonzaga player Josh Heytvelt had 17 points and 11 rebounds in the win and Sean May had 10 points and 7 rebounds before fouling out as Sonny Weems and Ty Lawson had unusually quiet games. In the
loss, ex-Florida player Nick Calathes and ex-Dayton player Romain Sato had 11 points apiece. Nikola Pekovic had 15 points and 6 rebounds in the win as Danilo Gallinari had 14 points and ex-Oregon player Malik Hairston added 12 points and 6 rebounds in the loss.

I was not planning on posting any information on the lower-tier European competitions in these midweek updates, but something big happened in Tuesday's Eurochallenge game between Turkish 6th place team Besiktas and German 7th place team Gottingen. Deron Williams scored 50 points in 36 minutes on only 23 field goal attempts in his team's 105-94 win. Remember that these are 40 minute games and I can think of a couple of college teams, including one in a power conference that I may have a graduate degree from that routinely struggle to reach 50 points in 40 minutes. The other two Americans also combined for 38 points.

More updates will come tomorrow including the new destination for an ex-Duke player.

Seventy seven!?!?!? That's great and all, but considering that it's still early, I'm just not sure he can sustain that level of performance against tougher competition.

I would like to think that I put that in there to see if anyone was reading, but it was just a mistake on my part.

I have been known to slip a few interesting comments into long posts to see if I get a reaction though.

Here is the boxscore:
