This is a sad loss for our state. Bill Friday seemed to have a vision for improvements in various aspects of life and was a voice of reason.

Not cool. Bill Friday was a fine gentleman and must be resting uneasily after seeing his beloved University being found to operate in the manner recently revealed. May he rest in peace.

This was my second thought. My first thought was a note of sadness to hear about a good man who did a lot for UNC passing. My second thought was that it must have grieved a man who absolutely put academics and academic integrity above athletics, to see his university become involved in one of the worst academic scandals in history, all for the sake of athletic success. RIP, Mr. Friday.

Friday was head of the UNC system from 1956 to 1986 and a real force for higher ed. At age 90, ee was even criticized by the Tar Heel nut cases after Butch Davis was canned.

I had forgotten that Friday was an original co-chair making the current mess at UNC more than a little ironic He must have been deeply saddened by the whole, sordid affair.

Truly, the greatest Tarheel of them all.

Friday earned his undergraduate degree from NC State, but most State fans (rightly or wrongly) associate him with UNC and Chapel Hill after running the system for all those years.
