Didn't Emmylou Harris also cover Desperado? I could not locate a copy. Anyone have it? I seem to remember her doing it at a concert I went to at Red Rocks in the early 80's.

I don't think you can count this as a "cover" when she co-wrote it and the two versions were recorded around the same time.

I feel like this question is a total slam dunk for "I Will Survive" by Cake but I also have to throw in "Oops I Did It Again" by Richard Thompson as a recent favorite.

I have a huge collection of Dylan Covers. My son thinks Hendrix wrote all along the watchtower. Dylan Covers

Simple Twist of Fate by Concrete Blonde
With God on Our Side by Neville Brothers
Wanted Man by George Thorogood and the Destroyers
Like a Rolling Stone by The Rolling Stones
One too many Mornings by Jerry Jeff Walker
Mary Lee Corvette did the whole Blood on the Tracks and that is pretty good.

The most fun cover is "My Back Pages" from the 30th anniversary concert with Bob Dylan, Roger McQuinn, Neil Young, Tom Petty, George Harrison and Eric Clapton taking turns singing the lead. How's that for a bunch of rock and roll heavyweights and they all sound like they are having fun.

Warning - may be slightly offensive

These frat boys out of Atlanta made a cover of

    Flo Rida's - Low

    except this one is called

    New Polo

Unless you can generally put up with unedited rap - don't click the link.
I don't really enjoy rap but I always enjoy a good parody cover...
I also heard EarlJam choreographed the guys dance moves.

    In my opinion:
Lucy in the sky with diamonds (Bill shatner)
Feel Like Making Love (Kid Rock)
    Stairway to Heaven (Dolly Parton)
Sweet Child -o- Mine (Sheryl crow)
and the famous I love Rock -n- Roll (Britney Spears).

Oh wait, the thread for the BEST cover songs. Silly me.

    I agree, Respect (Aretha)
    Mr. Tambourine Man (Byrds)
    and to add:
Twist & Shout (Beatles)Will you still love me tomorrow (Roberta Flack)
    All Along the watchtower (Hendrix)

and a "Desperado" addition, how 'bout Clint Black's version?

A thousand times yes! That Gin and Juice cover is excellent. Why is it always credited to Phish (whenever I see it, including when I downloaded it, and all the copies people I know have)? It sounds nothing like them.

My favorite cover (and honestly one of my favorite songs in general) is a Stevie Ray Vaughan instrumental cover of Jimmy's "Little Wing." Stevie's version is far and away better than the original in my opinion, even without words. It blows my mind every time I listen to it.

ok, this is the best so far.

If you have heard Lil Wayne - Vanilla Lollipop...

The same band I posted a few above...

They made a cover that is actually good.

its pretty amazing to see these kids pull off this song like this.

cute girls in the last one - just them being talented in this one - but still 1 or 2 explicit lines.

    My Back Pages

    This is fun http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4bUch5dveX0

Crimson flames tied through my ears
    Rollin' high and mighty traps
Pounced with fire on flaming roads
    Using ideas as my maps
"We'll meet on edges, soon," said I
    Proud 'neath heated brow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
    I'm younger than that now.

    Half-wracked prejudice leaped forth
"Rip down all hate," I screamed
Lies that life is black and white
Spoke from my skull. I dreamed
    Romantic facts of musketeers
    Foundationed deep, somehow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
    I'm younger than that now.

Girls' faces formed the forward path
    From phony jealousy
    To memorizing politics
    Of ancient history
    Flung down by corpse evangelists
    Unthought of, though, somehow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
    I'm younger than that now.

    A self-ordained professor's tongue
    Too serious to fool
    Spouted out that liberty
    Is just equality in school
    "Equality," I spoke the word
    As if a wedding vow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
    I'm younger than that now.

In a soldier's stance, I aimed my hand
At the mongrel dogs who teach
Fearing not that I'd become my enemy
In the instant that I preach
My pathway led by confusion boats
    Mutiny from stern to bow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
    I'm younger than that now.

Yes, my guard stood hard when abstract threats
    Too noble to neglect
    Deceived me into thinking
    I had something to protect
Good and bad, I define these terms
    Quite clear, no doubt, somehow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
    I'm younger than that now.

It is an interesting song, one of his best efforts and represents a pivotal moment in Dylan's career he is rejecting all of his former protest songs and saying that things are more complicated and I am moving on appropriately enough it appeared on "Another Side of Bob Dylan" album.

Glad to see Neil Young got dressed up for the occasion. And why did he get to sing twice? Both McGuinn and Petty sounded light years better and McGuinn actually recorded that song at one point.

Along with My Back Pages, I love The Byrds version of Chimes of Freedom.

There's a really good local band here in Austin called South Austin Jug Band that does a really cool version of Little Wing with no electric guitars. It's all fiddles, banjoes, jugs (of course) and acoustic guitar. Really cool and really different. They are a lot of fun generally and a bunch of kids in their 20s playing bluegrass/country in Austin with a little edge.

    because the night

The original song was recorded by Bruce Springsteen during sessions for his Darkness on the Edge of Town album. The Patti Smith Group was working on Easter in the studio next door, and the bands were exchanging tapes; Springsteen even composed some songs in the other band's style. With male-centered lyrics and a reported Latin feel, the original version of the song – a workingman's lament – wasn't finding a place on the Springsteen album. Smith took the song and recast it from a female perspective, and it was included on Easter, becoming the first single release from that album. Though it was never released on a Springsteen studio album, in concert beginning with his Darkness Tour Springsteen would often perform the song with his original lyrics, borrowing Smith's rock arrangement. The only commercially-released recording of a Springsteen version of the song was included on Live/1975–85.
