Dick Vitale, in his 29th season as an ESPN college basketball analyst, was selected for induction into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2008 as a contributor to the sport. The announcement was made Sunday in San Antonio, site of the NCAA Final Four, by the National Association of Basketball Coaches Foundation.

Well deserved...he has done a lot for the college game and for Duke / the ACC. I really appreciate that he is always positive and has fun.
Just to be clear, it appears that Vitale has been named to both the National Collegiate Hall of Fame and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Whereas Billy Packer has been named only to the former (as of yet).
The story from the Ft. Worth paper referred to Vitale and Packer as the "yin and yang" of college basketball. Uh, not really. More like the contrasting theater masks for "comedy and tragedy."
See, for example, this priceless pair:

It's a well deserved honor. He has done as much as humanly possible to promote a game without being a star on the court.
Unforunately, Vic Bubas was nominated for the second time to the Naismith as a contributor, but did not get in. Hopefully, he will be nominated again and enshrined soon.
