Freshman, JUCOS, and Transfers (oh my)

Below is a list of freshman, JUCOs, and transfers. UNC got the best class, followed by WFU. This class seems to be weaker than the last couple of classes. I don't see alot of guys who look like they will step right into starting roles. The Vermont transfer Trapani might be the best bet to start for BC next year, especially since he had a year to practice with the Eagles.

A list of ACC seniors can be found here. Between this post and that post you can start to get a sense of the movers and shakers in the ACC for next year. Though NBA departures will have the greatest effect on which team moves the most in the off-season.

Its never too early to project with absolute seriousness what the standings will look like next October in the ACC.

    UNC
Ed Davis, 6-8, RSCI# 11 - Going to be a great fit for Roy's system.

Tyler Zeller, 6-11, RSCI# 12 - Good player. Doesn't strike fear in me though. Should take a year or two to get the strength needed to bang in the blocks in the ACC.

Larry Drew, 6-0, RSCI# 47 - Good player. Not as fast as Lawson but more of a Roy PG, a consummate team player.

The best recruiting class in the ACC. Ditto for 2009 and for 2010. Roy is en-fuego. Only vertigo can stop Roy. Could have used another shooter but still the best class.

    Duke
Elliot Williams, 6-4, RSCI# 13 - moved up 13 spots from the last rankings. Looks like he is fully recovered from his knee cap dislocation. Dynamic guard with great quickness and lanky frame. A Duke type guard.

Olek Czyz, 6-8, RSCI# 68 - moved up 11 spots from the last rankings. Good leaper, tough inside player. Will be interesting to see how he adjusts to the ACC.

A good class for Duke but they needed a post player who could make an immediate contribution and didn't get one.

    Clemson
Caitlin Baciu, 7-0, RSCI# 69 – Sounds like your typical European (Romanian) big guy. Skilled but not a banger.

Andre Young, 5-9, RSCI# NR – A burner who likes an up-tempo style. Small but a good fit for Clemson. Better get that tear drop down real quick.

Tanner Smith, 6-5, RSCI# NR – A solid player. An okay shooter but not overly athletic.

An alright class. I don’t see anyone here that is ready to step in for any of the three departing seniors.

    VT
Victor Davilla, 6-8, RSCI# NR – A low post player who is a good rebounder and finisher around the basket.

Kendall Durant, 6-2, RSCI# NR – Haven’t see too much about him. Plays on the Boo Williams AAU team.

Gene Swindle, 6-11, RSCI# NR – a two star with his height is a project.

Another alright class. There doesn’t appear to be a major player that will really shake up the Hokie line-up for next year. Davilla could help the Hokies down low if he adjusts to ACC level play.

    Miami
Dequan Jones, 6-5, RSCI# 52 – Rose 40 spots since the last rankings. Explosive athlete but needs work on his skills.

Reggie Johnson, 6-8, RSCI# NR – Burly post player.

Cyrus McGowan, 6-9, Arkansas Transfer – Runs well for his size. Excels at rebounding.

No stars in this class for Miami but Jones should get in the rotation. The bigs look like they will need a year or two in the ACC to develop.

    Maryland
Gus Gilchrist, 6-9, Prepped – Athletic, shot blocker, rebounder, and finisher around the hoop.

Sean Mosley, 6-4, RSCI# 48 – Good player and a decent athlete. Does everything well.

Ken Bowman, 6-8, JUCO – Teammate of Maze. Not too much is known. Speculation is that a biggie on the MD is leaving early freeing up a slot.

Bobby Maze, 6-2, JUCO – On same JUCO team as Bowman. Not too much is known.

No real headliners though Gilchrist should see some time in the frontcourt.

    GT
Iman Shumpert, 6-4, RSCI# 15 – Moved up 19 spots since the last rankings. A combo guard who can score at a high level.

Shumpert was a good get. GT needed help in the backcourt and he will help. Will Hewitt sign any more guys for this class? I think they have around 4 more scholarships to give out.

    WFU
Al-Farouq Aminu, 6-8, RSCI# 8 – A long lanky athlete who likes to start from the perimeter and create.

Ty Walker, 7-0, RSCI # 34 – A long, athletic seven footer. Great shot blocker. Better on defense than offense at this point.

Tony Woods, 6-10, RSCI# 38 – A big man that can get out in transition. Needs some refinement with his offensive game.

Almost as good as UNC’s class. Should compliment the guards from last year’s class well (Clark, Teague). It will be interesting to see how the chemistry works with these guys and last year’s team that was pretty tight with each other.

    FSU
Chris Singleton, 6-8, RSCI # 23 – A big athlete who has 3 point range but has some questions about consistency.

Xavier Gibson, 6-9, RSCI# 56 – Fell 20 plus spots since the last rankings. A long athlete who excels at more at the defensive end than at the offensive end.

Luke Loucks, 6-4, RSCI # NR – A high IQ PG who excels at running a team as opposed to scoring.

    Deividas Dulkys, 6-4 , RSCI # NR – A shooter from Lithuania.

Derwin Kitchen, 6-4, JUCO – This guy has bounced around a lot. Don’t know too much about him.

Pierre Jordan, 6-0, RSCI # NR – Looks like they really needed a PG.

FSU got a couple of bigs who might see some time next year but didn’t really get any immediate help for the backcourt. A so-so class for the Noles.

    Virginia
Syleven Landesberg, 6-7, RSCI # 37 - Fell 17 spots since the last rankings. Long bodied scorer who needs strength. Didn’t look to impressive in the McDonald’s All-Star game the other night, for what that is worth.

John Bradenburg, 6-11, RSCI # 93 - Fell 20 spots since the last rankings. Low block player whose best days are ahead of him. UVA beat out Stanford for John.

Assane Sene, 7-0, RSCI # NR – An African import. Sene was one of the 4 players featured in the documentary “Hoopland”. UVA beat out UCONN for him.

An okay class for Leito, missed out on his top targets, Davis and Williams. Landesberg should play next year. The other guys are more of projects.

    BC
Reggie Jackson, 6-2, RSCI # NR – An athletic guard from Colorado. A good football player also, should bring some more toughness to the Eagles.

Dallas Elmore, 6-4, RSCI# NR – A solid yet unspectacular wing.

Even Ravenel, 6-7, RSCI# NR – A Solid yet undersized post payer. Works hard for rebounds.

Joe Trapani, 6-8, Vermont Transfer – Scored 11 PPG for Vermont in his sophomore season. Good size and shoots it well from the outside (40%).

Skinner got some more BC type players. No blue chips allowed. Hard working athletes only please. The transfer Trapani should become a starter and an immediate impact player.

    NCSU
Julius Mays, 6-2, RSCI# NR – A scoring PG from Indiana. The pack also signed his teammate Scott Wood for 09.

    C.J. Williams, 6-5, RSCI# NR – A multi-positional player with a decent mid-range game.

No real headliners for the Pack in this class. The Pack needs Mays to be an impact player in the backcourt right away.

Maryland's Ken Bowman and FSU's Derwin Kitchen are two of the top 5 or so Juco transfers in the nation. Both those guys will likely have an impact on the ACC next year.

Here are Van Coleman's JUCO rankings.

One of the key players next year will be Bobby Frasor who is returning from an injury.

Don't forget Ish Smith will be back, too. I think this team will be awesome if Johnson comes back. I saw the word here that he will likely declare for the NBA, but who knows for sure? Wake will have high scoring affairs, though like Skip's past teams which were good, they don't care much for defense.

It will be interesting to see how all the pieces fit together for Wake next year. They had good chemistry this past year and probably over achieved a little bit. How will the chemistry be affected with the addition of some talented frosh who will want to be impact players? Wake has all the makings of a team that could struggle on and off with consistency as they struggle thru defining their identity.
