    A quick google search reveals:

    http://www.globalaircraft.org/50_largest.htm

Another site also calls the An-225 Cossack the largest plane in the world, based on weight and carrying capacity.

The largest wide-use commercial airliner is the Airbus A380, which first flew in October 2007 for Singapore Airlines (18 other airlines have orders). It weighs almost as much as the An-225 (over 1.3 million pounds) and can carry up to 853 passengers.

I never understood why people feel safer in giant airplanes than they do in turboprops... it's a miracle of physics that something that large and heavy can fly.

Two obvious advantages to larger airplanes are more engines (a 747 can continue to fly even if three engines go out) and more people in control of the plane (with a two-pilot crew each pilot serves as a check against the other).

Also, heavier things get bumped around a lot less by the same amount of turbulence than do lighter things.

The latter point is key. I much prefer flying in the big guys because you almost never have that icky falling sensation.

I saw one of these at the Charleston airport last year. It's used to transport parts of the 787 from Japan and Italy to the US as part of the construction process, and it's one of the craziest damn things I've ever seen flying.

That thing looks like a missile. I bet that's what it is. Probably made it in Area 51.

You beat me to the James Bond reference.

I did look for a picture but was unsuccessful.

I thought the Airbus A380 was a giant dalmation...

Aren't the spots caps which have been thrown into the air?

Yes, the literal interpretation would dictate so. I prefer to believe it is a dalmation, a similar effort as the Sea World planes that Southwest used to and may still have flying.

For mainstream Boeing coverage, Seattle Times is hard to beat (go figure):

That thing is just absurd. Seeing it in person, it just strikes you as something that couldn't possibly fly.
