    Request for Music Help

The always lovely and elegant Mrs. allenmurray will soon be celebrating her 50th birthday. We'll be having a party. While there will be live music for a large part of the time, I'm putting together some recorded music for times when the band isn't playing (dinner, etc.).

I'm going to include some of her favorites and some "danceable" R&B standards. However, a want a few unexpected but theme appropriate songs. I Don't Wanna Grow Up by the Ramones, and Rickie Lee Jones' version of I won't Grow Up from Peter Pan are both on my list.

Can DBR folks give me some other suggestions? They don't necessarily have to be in the same vein as the two above.

Would John Lennon's Grow old along with me be out of sync with your other choices? I figured since you are throwing the party celebrating her, that song would be a combination of both. I really like Mary Chapin Carpenter's version.

It was the only getting older, whether we want to or not, song I could think of off the top of my head.

Great - I can't believe I hadn't thought of that one. I'm not familiar with MCC's version - I'll have to check it out as Maureen really likes MCC. Me, I'd go with Lennon, but it is her party.

Oh good, I'm glad you like the suggestion. Wasn't sure it was something that would fit, but it looks like it will. Glad I posted (as I almost didn't).

Not about age per se, but it will tell her she's still "got it" as far as you're concerned!

How about "This Is Us" by Mark Knopfler & Emmy Lou Harris, although that might be better for an anniversary?

There's an up-tempo country song from a few years back called "I'm Old Enough To Know Better, But I'm Still To Young To Care" that would probably be appropriate. It's by Wade Hayes.

In a similar thematic vein: The Action by Keb Mo' link

    Remember when we first met
I was so excited just to get to know you
Oh baby just to know you
I was just a little bit shy
    God willing I was ready
    To try to show you
    Oh just to show you

    I felt a little funny
But it was really no joke
I wanted to prove my love
In every word that I spoke

    (Chorus
    But the action
    Speaks louder
    You know the action
    Speaks louder than
    The word
    The action,
    Louder than the word

I loved you just the way you were
Somehow I had to find the nerve to tell you
Oh baby just to tell you
So I did what a man must do
I walked right over to you
    And I was asking
    Baby, lets go dancing

    I felt a little guilty
But I had committed no crime
    I wanted to love you
    Love you and love you
    For a long time

    (Chorus)

    (Bridge
    I can't wait until I'm holding you
And there's no doubt in your mind
You're the one and only one for me
    Only one for me

I'm gonna prove my love no matter how long that it takes
The feelings I have for you they're no mistake

    (Chorus)
    The Gordog

    Familar with Steve Forbert?

His latest CD Strange Names and New Sensations has several ruminations on growing old gracefully, including the first song "Middle Age."

If you were just a tad older -- Bop by Dan Seals. Maybe it works if you're old rockers.

As Time Goes By, the Dooley Wilson (Casablanca) version, if you're going sentimental.

You mentioned you have a live band, if you want to go the full on sentimental route and have an adequate voice, it's a pretty easy song to sing.
