    Former National Champ Breakdown by Region - Interesting

    I know it doesn't mean much, but it seems kind of interesting. Someone mentioned that Duke's bracket should be dubbed the Tradition bracket, and they have a solid case. Look at the totals of national championships won per region. (I put this together quickly so it might not be perfect):

    West
    UCLA 11
    Kentucky 7
    Indiana 5
    Duke 3
    Kansas 2
    Holy Cross 1
    Total = 29

    East
    UNC 4
    Mich St. 2
    Marquette 1
    Arkansas 1
    Georgetown 1
    Total = 9

    Midwest
    Florida 1
    Arizona 1
    Maryland 1
    Oregon 1
    UNLV 1
    Wisconsin 1
    Total = 6

    South
    Louisville 2
    Ohio State 1
    Stanford 1
    Total = 4

    I apologize for not formatting better.

    Are you counting what they used to call the Southeast as South too?

    Back in the day, wasn't there a "Mid-East?"

    Yeah I don't think the regions go by any of these names officially anymore. I think the geographical names have changed throughout the past couple of decades, and now they just use the names of the regional cities. Midwest=St. Louis Regional, South=San Antonio, West=San Jose, East=East Rutherford.

    According to wikipedia there was a mideast until 1985 and southeast until 1998.

    Yeah, Carolina had to play in it once.

    Then Dean Smith complained about having to travel to Riyadh and they changed it.

    Not this year. It's gone back to the compass regions.

    I don't think LetItBD08 was talking about the historical region names, just pointing out how the West region included 29 national championships, and calling it the Tradition region. I'm surprised that the talking heads on TV haven't mentioned that.

    Now that I think about it, I don't see much point in directional region names. How about just naming the regions after the #1 seed in each region? After all, the selection announcements seem to always start with announcement of the #1 seeds. The West region includes 2 from California, 1 from Utah, 1 from Kansas,and 12 from east of the Mississippi. Definitely leans Eastward.

    Nice writeup. I heard ESPN mention how many FF's the coaches in the East region had been to (11-ish?), which of course made me think, "well, K has 10 by himself..." Anyone care to figure up this one?
