    Charting Duke vs. Virginia

Tonight was one of the more interesting games to chart. Why? 1) Duke used 22 unique lineups -- only three were used more than once. 2) We saw the second showing of true small ball -- Paulus-Smith-Scheyer-Nelson-Henderson -- with a couple of minutes left in the game. 3) We saw a shocking plus/minus number you probably never would have guessed watching the game -- Nolan Smith was +19 in 18 minutes. It was a fantastic effort by the team, as evidenced in the numbers:

    Individuals
    DeMarcus Nelson 64-44 (+20)
    Kyle Singler 58-39 (+19)
    Nolan Smith 47-28 (+19)
    Gerald Henderson 56-40 (+16)
    Jon Scheyer 56-45 (+11)
    Taylor King 36-26 (+10)
    David McClure 43-37 (+6)
    Lance Thomas 24-19 (+5)

We better put Davidson in the starting lineup...+80?

    Haha, only kidding. Great game!

More evidence that this may have been a signature game for Nelson.

Note that Nelson was in the top 4 lineups, and 5 of the top 6. Partly a function of his minutes, but also indicative of his impact.

He was also in the bottom 4. He plays a lot... and that is a very good thing.

Fair point. Seems like he's in about 80% of the lineups.

This team is deep. Every scholarship player is averaging double digit minutes and DeMarcus Nelson is the only player averaging over 30 mpg (30.3). Our bench production continues to be significant. Yesterday, the bench outscored Virginia's bench 27-18. This statistic highlights a specific improvement over last year's team. With FSU employing a six man rotation, I expect Duke to substitute early, often and throughout the game Thursday morning.

Hmm. I think I heard something about a captaincy somewhere. There may be a connection.
