    Horse Racing 2024

This seems to be a good weekend to start the new thread for 2024.

I'll bring the basic information into this post so it is easily accessible:

    KYD 2024 Prep Races

This is as good a time as any to share the list of KYD Prep Races through May 2024:
    https://www.usracing.com/kentucky-derby/prep-races

    Foreign Races are included.

Here is a list of the Kentucky Oaks prep races:

    Ends and Beginnings

This weekend will mark the last of the Futurities (restricted to 2YOs) and the first 3YO races toward the 2024 KYD.

On New Year's Eve, this Sunday:

The Renaissance for 2YOs will be run at Oaklawn Park:
    https://www.brisnet.com/secure-bin/b...5/summary.html
    [ URL above; Sunday December 31, 2023; Oaklawn Park - Race 7; PPs ]
This will be an interesting race. A precocious maiden winner (Booth) did not do so well in her next race; one of the horses that beat her in the next race (Normandy Hero) will be up against him. It remains to be seen if Booth's tremendous debut was a fluke or not.

The Louisiana Futurity will be run at the Fair Grounds in Louisiana for 2YO fillies:
    https://www.brisnet.com/secure-bin/b...5/summary.html
    [ URL above; Sunday December 31, 2023; Fair Grounds - Race 10; PPs ]
Freeburn and Clearly A Test will headline here.

On this same Briswatch page you'll also see a pointer for the Year's End also for 2YO fillies.

There will be a couple of races on Monday, but I don't have all of the pointers yet.
Traditionally, the first 3YO Stakes race of the year is the Jerome at Aqueduct, but I think that will be run next Saturday (the 6th of January).

The next KYD Future Wager starts 1/19.

    Stay tuned.

Thanks for getting us started for the 2024 season. I have a microscopic interest in a soon to be 3 year old Justify filly named Guinevere who has had 6 workouts between November 18 and December 29. She actually had one work under 48 seconds. She is trained by Wesley Ward. It was originally contemplated that she was precocious and would debut this past spring at Keeneland. She didn’t. Ward has kept her at Keeneland where all of her works occurred. Myracehorse is obviously getting her ready to debut, but not sure where. Of the five horses in which I have owned micro shares she appears to have the most talent. Of course the other ones couldn’t run a lick. When MyRacehorse gives me notice of her first race I will post here. I’m not buying tickets to the Oaks just yet.

It appears that your colt has not yet been named. Cotai Glory out of La Cuvee? Very turfy pedigrees!

    Good Luck.

They’re still calling him La Cuvee 21. He has been jogging long distances at the farm. Supposedly getting ready to start serious works. Not sure why they are taking so long to name him.

Guinevere will probably debut at Turfway in late January per email late today. Seems like Justify’s have run well on dirt and turf, so maybe synthetic makes a lot of sense.

Ha, I like that. They could be good on dirt or turf, so let's start 'em on something else.

Actually, Keeneland is kind on horses. Safe surface, and all those breeders get to watch the ponies that they brought up for 1.5 years. It's closer to a rural setting and has grass fields that Churchill does not. Grass fields are good to take your horses for a walk and they can eat some of the flora (remember Baffert talking about his horses getting some drugs from terrestial settings). Giving your horse time in the grass is a big positive for the state of mind of the horse. But paddocks would be better and Keeneland doesn't appear to have those.

    Notable 2YO Firster

Here is a first time starter that made a little noise. His name is Born Noble:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1741149515686490363
The son of Constitution was Pletcher/Irad connections and race greenly, so he has a much bigger upside. We've seen a few starters late as a 2YO or early 3YO that have made noise in the KYD. Could this be one of them? We'll keep an eye on him.

I came across a familiar name in an unfamiliar place; Forbidden Kingdom.
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1741190724241219659
Forbidden Kingdom won the San Felipe last year as a 3YO and looked like a KYD trail top horse. But he never won again, and seemed injured for most of the spring. He did come back, but couldn't win.. on the dirt. So he switched to the turf for the first time and won with some grit.

    Gural Rule for College Football

I was reading about the (terrible) FSU performance (and player attendance). It occurred to me that a similar thing happens in horse racing.

In horse racing, sound individuals, who are great 3YOs, retire early to go to stud where there may be more money available than on the track. In Harness Racing, Jeff Gural, who owns/runs the Meadowlands Racetrack, where many Triple Crown races are contested, created a rule that said (essentially) any horse sired by a sound 3YO who retired before turning 4YO, can not enter a stakes race at The Meadowlands until that stud's second crop.
    https://harnesslink.com/usa/gural-rule-revised/

What incentives can you give college football players to play in bowl games?
Perhaps the NFL needs some version of the Gural Rule for the draft.

Another notable 2YO performance; Carbone won an allowance race after an 8 length maiden victory:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1741579946630541393
Carbone went to the front and didn't look back (jockey did though).

Carbone's sire Mitole is having quite the end of 2023.

This winds up the 2YO races for the foals of 2021.

    KYD Action on NYD

I missed posting about some minor stakes races that carried KYD points or implications on New Year's Day:

At Oaklawn Park, the Smarty Jones Stakes was run. It was won by Catching Freedom:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1741950177911394323
Looks like a colt with potential. Raced a bit greenly in the stretch, but was 5 wide on the turn. This was the son of Constitution's 3rd lifetime start. 10 KYD points to the winner.

At Gulfstream, the Mucho Macho Man was run. It was won by Otello:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1741945411001344166
Tough race by this colt. He was blocked inside for most of the race, but got it going in the stretch and prevailed. No KYD points, but next stop the Holy Bull.
I would point out an interesting name that is popping up more often; Eskendereya! Eskendereya is the boodmare sire of Otello, and he is the sire of Mitole (who is making an impact as a sire with his oldest foals now 3YO in 2024). I recall that Eskendereya, a son of Giant's Causeway, won 4 of 6 and was on the KYD trail early in his 3YO year before an apparent injury.

For the 3YO fillies, the Cash Run Stakes was run at Gulfstream Park and won by Power Squeeze:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1741928252120465676
Very nice win for the daughter of Union Rags.

    Saturday 1/6/2024

The KYD trail begins in earnest now that we are 4 months from the first Saturday in May.

We have 2 contests for 3YOC that are of interest, and have KYD points:

At Aqueduct, it is the Jerome:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above; Saturday January 6, 2024; Aqueduct - Race 3; PPs ]
Not unlike last spring, there is a storm expected for Friday into Saturday, so don't be surprised if there is a cancellation; or at least a mud situation.
Also, these early stakes races all seem to have only 5 or 6 entrants. Until the big points races I'd expect that to continue, especially in the cold weather venues.
    But I digress.
El Grande O has had a little time off, and appreciates a muddy track. Drum Roll Please has more starts, and finished 3rd in the Remsen.

At Santa Anita, it is the San Vicente:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...99/summary.htm
[ URL above; Saturday January 6, 2024; Santa Anita Park - Race 8; PPs ]
Muth makes his first appearance since the BC, where he finished a distant second to Fierceness. (Fierceness BTW is back on the workout tab). Slider has some talent, but threw in a dud in the BC on the turf. Pilot Commander is a $700k son of Justify and has (only) a maiden win. Boltage has the best name of the bunch, but he hasn't shown the class yet; perhaps the move to Mike Smith is what he needed. Muth is the bet. Looking at Slider second.

The 6th race at Santa Anita is an interesting allowance race:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...99/summary.htm
[ URL above; Saturday January 6, 2024; Santa Anita Park - Race 6; PPs ]
Newgate makes his first appearance on the track since winning the RB Lewis on the KYD trail last year. Big City Lights is lightly raced for a 5 year old, but he's finished in the top 2 for all of his races. Is Ginobili ready after having only 3 starts in 2 years; most recently he was terrible and had time off. Sir Atticus can be in the top 3.

In looking at Muth he appears to have been in continuous training since late spring. After his last race in the Breeders Cup he worked two weeks later. If you were training this horse, would you have given him time off after the BC and crank him up a little later for the Ky. Derby?

Yes I would given a block of time off.
My 2 YOs were always given a couple of months off (assuming they had a 2YO campaign). There is noticeable growth during this time, physical and mental. Since Muth is a Baffert horse, I assume he is living and training at the track. I'm not sure that there are any grass paddocks nearby. Spending your whole year at the track can wear down a horse. My horses did not train at the Race Track; it was a training facility in a pastoral setting. Grass paddock sometimes before training. When given a month or more off there were nearby farms where we could ship the horse four a couple of weeks of R&R. But I didn't train horses like a Baffert or Lukas; you don't see how many of their (expensive) horses DO NOT make it to the race track. You see the horses that survived the gauntlet of hard training. If you only have a couple of horses to train, you are much more careful about pushing them.

But I'll qualify this by noting that there are some differences in the training of Harness Horses (SBreds) and TBreds. SBreds train more miles, but lower speed. Some TBreds might be interval trained, which requires some repeated short sprints with time in between sprints. Assuming that the physiology of the 2 breeds is the same, the TBreds take a bit more of a beating (i.e., wear and tear). It also depends on the trainer and the goals. SBreds can sometimes take as many as 3 races to get in shape; TBreds might not have that luxury of more starts, so they need to be ready. Of course, first and second starts for most of these horses is scary stuff, so you always have to give an allowance for that. In maiden races, you often see a so-so TBred have a significantly better second effort. SBreds have practice races as part of the training regimen; and they have to go to a race track to qualify in a certain minimum (actually maximum) time before they are allowed on the track. This is a bit different than TBreds that train with a partner.

    Sorry to prattle on.

    On Sunday 1/7/2024

It is the fillies turn for a couple of 3YO races:

At Gulfstream Park, they run the Glitter Woman:
    https://www.brisnet.com/secure-bin/b...5/summary.html
    [ URL above; Sunday - January 7, 2024; Gulfstream Park - Race 9; PPs ]
Let Them Watch seems to have talent. But otherwise, the field is a pick-em.

At Santa Anita there is the Santa Ynez (had enough of Santa lately??):
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above; Sunday - January 7, 2024; Santa Anita park - Race 8; PPs ]
What?? No Bob Baffert entries in a Santa Anita Stakes race?? Wow. That's OK, Doug O'Neill has 2 entries. Kopion has only one race, but if she improves a little, she will rate better than these others. This daughter of Omaha Beach is the most expensive horse in this 5 horse field. Tambo has won a couple of lower class races.

The wet weather waited until after the Jerome Stakes, so we had a dry track. The winner was Drum Roll Please:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1743702080882159739
DRP stayed back (not hard in a 5 horse field) and breezed past his competition in the stretch. In DRP's last 2 losses, it was to Dornoch and Locked, two very highly rated colts. So this result was not a surprise. The race seemed a bit slow, and DRP was awarded an 80 Beyer.

In the San Vicente, Muth won easily:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1743783100797395011
Muth received a 91 Beyer for his efforts.

Big City Lights won that interesting allowance race:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1743765796315357248
Newgate wasn't quite sharp enough. Big City Lights had credentials; his only losses were to Sprint star The Chosen Vron.

Of interest to the Triple Crown Trail: there is discussion of moving the Preakness to Laurel Race Track for a couple of years while repairs are made to Pimlico. The state of Maryland is involved with this, so there is recognition of the relevancy of Pimlico to the horse racing industry in Maryland. Laurel reminds me of Keeneland. Also, I had reports from my brother (the TBred owner) and my son (the DevilPony) that Pimlico was in great need of repairs. I just wonder if Laurel will open the infield for the annual Preakness bacchanal.

Let me start off with an usual race performance from a 3YOC maiden starter named Crimson Light. Watch what happens to the 1 horse when he leaves the gate. He gives up at least 20 lengths and can't even be seen on the number grid below:

An amazing recovery; we'll have to watch this horse, but he needs Pletcher to teach him some manners.

    Now for the fillies:

In the Glitter Woman, Into Champagne showed some class:

Into Champage (#1) was stuck on the rail, but found some daylight. She had only a maiden (first time starter) victory previously. Worth watching.

In the Santa Ynez, Kopion was the big favorite and delivered:

Wonder how many tickets on Crimson Light were thrown away at the track after the first half of the race? It was absolutely one of the worst starts where the horse didn’t actually fall down or lose the jockey I have ever seen. Poor Kendirck must have thought he was in a rodeo riding the bucking bronco. That he recovered to win may be more a statement about how bad the rest of the field was than his ability.

You might be right; Crimson Light received a 57 Beyer!
I looked at the time of 1:22 and thought that was pretty good for 7 furlongs; only problem was this race was 6.5 furlongs. Still, the horse gave up 4 seconds with that start.

Prank was just sold for $1.6M at a Keeneland Horse Auction.
She only had one start, at Saratoga, winning by 10 lengths.
She is an Into Mischief out of the dam of Belmont winner Mo Donegal.
This is the 3rd foal of the mare.

The foals have been dropping for several days now. IMHO that is risky when you breed your mare so early it is born on 1/4 or 1/5. Remember, any foal born on 12/31 becomes a year old in less than 24 hours; big problem.
