Aside from the usual news sites, Mental Floss is a decent escape sometimes.
Hi Everyone!
I seem to have hit a rut with the sites I check out on a daily basis (except this one of course!) and was looking for suggestions to keep my brain occupied a little more when I have some down time (never at work, noooooooooooo). Are there interesting websites that y'all look at for fun and/or for something that is vaguely educational? Thank you for your suggestions!
Aside from the usual news sites, Mental Floss is a decent escape sometimes.
xkcd.com? You may already know this one.
Slate Star Codex is a blog I like to read when I have time. It is written by a psychiatrist. It covers a variety of topics: medicine as a field (especially with regard to psychology/psychiatry), epistemology, the scientific method and rationality, artificial intelligence, the effective altruism movement, culture, specific political topics, the author's non-fiction writing, and others.
There is a moderated comment section for most posts and the quality of comments is quite good. It is a good read for people who are interested in thinking critically about a wide range of subjects relating to human behavior. It is not a good read for someone who has trouble confronting one's own biases/emotional responses (unless using it as a training ground to that end).
Sporcle!
http://www.thesmokinggun.com/ is always good to reinforce to yourself that there is an endless supply of strange things happening around the world.
I vote for Mental Floss. It was started at Duke by two of my daughter's classmates ('01). I particularly enjoy having its random, enlightening info show up on social media.
I spend most of my time watching The Non Sequitur show on YouTube. 1 of the hosts is from Greensboro and the other was in the Navy as a Nuke but they hold a vast amount of shows covering different topics where they host debates/discussions on many things as well as they sometimes just bring in PHDs to answer questions about their fields (math, physics, biology, history, etc...).

Not a site, but a Youtube Channel:
My new guilty pleasure is Hot Ones. A genius idea — interview musicians, actors, and notable people while eating progressively hotter chicken wings. They all start out so normal — and usually end up so off the rail.
Warning, hot wings make people cuss. Sometimes, a lot.

Charlize Theron: https://youtu.be/ZgQMW4eVrzw
Russell Brand: https://youtu.be/mHTR-XF6MXU
Coolio: https://youtu.be/fhcW3cdZKEg
Rachel Ray (truly, The Boss): https://youtu.be/t69oHRPb4E8
It’s addictive.
I've watched a bunch of these before and can corroborate that they're entertaining. It's also somewhat amusing to see who can get through the wings and who complains/quits.
Also, I just like the concept because I like hot wings.
Also, I ate some fresh Carolina Reapers from the Duke greenhouse once. Yummy.
Yikes, I'm not sure I'm smart enough for that site. I looked at it and felt instantly pretty slow-witted. Looks like I won't be posting as much of my sparkling wit there as I do here.
Have they got a section for general mopery? I'm pretty adept at that.
But Coolio, hey I think I could thrive there!
Nothing incites bodily violence quicker than a Duke fan turning in your direction and saying 'scoreboard.'
I'm pretty much in a major rut. I go to maybe 6 sites; places that parallel my interests.
I like Duke BB, so I come here.
I like golf, so I got to a forum called GolfBuzz.
I like old-school shaving (currently using straight razors 6 days a week), so I go to shave forums: theshavingcadre.com, badgerandblade.com, shavenook.com.
I like playing bass guitar, so I go to YouTube for instructional videos and bass covers.
And....um...yeah. That's pretty much it.

badger and blade was the site I found that encouraged my switch away from Gillette and into safety razors. Im not bold enough to take that next step, and it sure seems like the cost of entry is steep for straight razors. Your mention of badger and blade made me think in some ways it parallels DBR- instead of height, minutes, etc the debates are blade types and which soaps are best.
