    Favorite driving songs

There are some all-time greats that I like a lot like Maybelline, Roadhouse Blues, Radar Love, etc. It helps if the song is about driving but for me it’s most essential for a driving song to have some attitude and raw bluesy or rockabilly guitar. Dire Straits and Petty’s Damn the Torpedos in it’s entirety work well for me. Lately I’m partial to some Telecaster twang. My current Google Play driving playlist starts like this:

Ray Wylie Hubbard - Bad on Fords
    https://youtu.be/QdZqxIHrunU

Chris Knight - Hammer Goin Down
    https://youtu.be/OfwEpUrlQXw

    William Topley- Uptown Baby
    https://youtu.be/NFDR3zs8xBk

Robert Earl Keen - Amarillo Highway
    https://youtu.be/jFd0m5nJ3Mc

The Ravyns- Raised on the Radio
    https://youtu.be/jFd0m5nJ3Mc

    Kelly Willis - Red Sunset
    https://youtu.be/W8oCfG_ZiDs

Mozella - You Don’t Love Anyone ( yeah kind of an outlier I know)
    https://youtu.be/e-GTKTmSWO8

The Derailers - There Goes the Bride
    https://youtu.be/qhMenoEUSDE

    Steve Earle - Hardcore Troubadour

Lucinda Williams - Can’t Let Go

Great topic, will respond in more detail later. Two of my faves off the top:

    Running on Empty, Jackson Browns:

Jet Airliner, Paul Pena (he wrote the song, even though he let Steve Miller record it first — Pena’s version is better IMO):

(Would also post Truckin’ by the Grateful Dead, but would like to find a version friendly to those not predisposed towards the band. This one is short: https://youtu.be/qaQ8r-SwR2c )

First thing that comes to mind is Aqualung...in its totality. And to be eclectic, anything by Gordon Lightfoot.

Yeah me too. A friend of mine used to book those guys at the Music Farm in Charleston back in the 90s. I’ve had an opportunity to talk to them several times. Rick primarily plays a modified Sears and Roebuck guitar for his unique rockabilly/surf-rock hybrid sound.

Is Born to Run too obvious?

Add Don Henley, "Boys of Summer."

Mahler's second symphony always revs me up.

Maybe not what you're looking for.

Hmm Born to Run has a pretty good rocker titled “Night”. BtR also has Thunder Road and, of course the song “Born to Run” which are both good driving songs. “Drive all Night” is on The River. It’s an 8 1/2 minute song
that’s a little dark and slow for by driving playlist. “Racing in the Streets” is on Darkness on the Edge of Town

I agree on “Boys of Summer” I hadn’t thought of that one but there is something about it that is suitable for highway driving. I’ll have take your word on the symphonies though.

“Boys of Summer” reminds me of “Driving” by Patty Griffin. Something about the guitar creates tension and sense of desperation or loss.

Here’s another very similar one that just came to mind

And this is the only Patty song that’s actually on my driving playlist https://youtu.be/fvDatU7C7eU
