Interesting also that they'd choose a different format just for the NCAA tournament, but I get that they did it to increase drama/make it more exciting for viewers with matchplay.
I'm pretty sure it's unique to the tournament, and I agree with you that fatigue could really play a role.

    GO DUKE!!!
Duke hanging in there. Two matches are over--Smalley won 5 and 4, Eaton lost 4 and 3. Pendaries is up three through 13 and Shuman is up 2 through 12. Katz is down 3 through 14, so he would have to pull a rabbit out of the hat to win or even square it. But if Pendaries and Shuman can hold on, Duke will advance.

Can we perhaps merge this (temporarily) to the I Don't Want to Jinx It thread?

Looks like it's going to come down to Shuman. Katz down 3 thru 15 and Pendaries up 4 thru 14, which would even the score at two apiece. Shuman is up 1 thru 13 now.

I hope Shuman can hold on. Ghim is the #1 ranked amateur in the world.

Wow, did not realize that. How do the pairings get decided? Looks like Duke put its #5 player against Texas' #1, thinking they were basically going to concede that match and compete on the others (which seems like a good strategy honestly). Ghim finished stroke play in third place at -6 (one off the leader) while Shuman was T65 at +14, so this would clearly be a major upset. The rest of Duke's contingent was T15, T32, T32, 36 after stroke play.

Scottie Scheffler is #29. So if we win, we would have beaten #1 and #29 in the world to do it.

Once up four, match is now all square with 2 to go. Shuman was very shaky on the last whole. Ghin in the fairway on 17. Shuman again right into the deep rough.

    Ghin rinses his second shot!

  11. #51
I tuned in just in time to Ghim put it in the drink!

    Time to take advantage...

  12. #52
All square going to 18. Need a good drive.

  13. #53
Well, Ghim had an absolutely brilliant shot after the penalty to get a gimme bogey. Shuman ended up with a pretty tricky putt for his bogey, and he made it!

On to 18. This is tense.

  14. #54
Ghin in fairway bunker. Shuman on right side of fairway. Both probably layups.

  15. #55
Ghim's drive found a fairway bunker. Shuman is on the fairway, but on the wrong side of the dogleg.

Still need to come up with some big shots.

  16. #56
Jake puts second pin high. Great shot.

  17. #57
Beautiful second shot by Shuman! In the middle of the green, will have an eagle putt.

Ghim laid up out of the bunker, and still has a third shot from the fairway upcoming.

  18. #58
Ghim's approach ends up on the front fringe. HUGE chance to win here.

    Two putts to win match.
