The other quarterfinals started with Australia finally showing some signs of life before losing to Canada 74-70 as prepster Cashius McNeilly had 11 points. France is probably still the second best team in the tournament as they beat Turkey 86-70. The other game was guaranteed to provide a surprise team to the semifinals and it was Puerto Rico that got the 75-60 win over Montenegro. The winners have players in high schools across the country as Tory San Antonio had 30 points and 6 rebounds, Andre Curbelo had 20 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 assists, and Victor Rosa had 13 points.

So, help me to understand something... the press release says these are the players who will be the pool for the 2018-20 national teams (to compete in the 2019 World Cup and 2020 Olympics):

Members of the 2018-20 USA National Team are: Harrison Barnes (Dallas Mavericks); Bradley Beal (Washington Wizards); Devin Booker (Phoenix Suns); Jimmy Butler (Minnesota Timberwolves); Mike Conley Jr. (Memphis Grizzlies); DeMarcus Cousins (Golden State Warriors); Stephen Curry (Golden State Warriors); Anthony Davis (New Orleans Pelicans); DeMar DeRozan (Toronto Raptors); Andre Drummond (Detroit Pistons); Kevin Durant (Golden State Warriors); Paul George (Oklahoma City Thunder); Eric Gordon (Houston Rockets); Draymond Green (Golden State Warriors); Blake Griffin (Detroit Pistons); James Harden (Houston Rockets); Tobias Harris (Los Angeles Clippers); Gordon Hayward (Boston Celtics); Kyrie Irving (Boston Celtics); LeBron James (Los Angeles Lakers); DeAndre Jordan (Dallas Mavericks); Kawhi Leonard (San Antonio Spurs); Damian Lillard (Portland Trail Blazers); Kevin Love (Cleveland Cavaliers); Kyle Lowry (Toronto Raptors); CJ McCollum (Portland Trail Blazers); Khris Middleton (Milwaukee Bucks); Victor Oladipo (Indiana Pacers); Chris Paul (Houston Rockets); Isaiah Thomas (Los Angeles Lakers); Klay Thompson (Golden State Warriors); Myles Turner (Indiana Pacers); Kemba Walker (Charlotte Hornets); John Wall (Washington Wizards); and Russell Westbrook (Oklahoma City Thunder).
By 2019 and especially 2020, won't it be likely that several of Donovan Mitchell, Jayson Tatum, Joel Embiid, Jaylen Brown, Kyle Kuzma, Brandon Ingram, and Karl Anthony Towns would be ahead of many of these guys? Are we just saying that anyone under 23 does not get to be on the national team?

-Jason "I know we all talk about how Canada is rising... and their 2020 team should be really good... but what about Australia in 2020 with Ben Simmons, Dante Exum, Joe Ingles, Aaron Baynes, Thon Maker, and Paddy Mills?" Evans

The USA U17 Boys' team found themselves trailing after one quarter as Canada came out on fire to start the game. The team took the challenge well, controlling the rest of the game after regaining their lead on their way to a 120-71 win. The final will be at 7:30pm ET on Sunday and can be seen on ESPN+.

The other semifinal went to France 78-73. A couple of players who have been great for Puerto Rico so far helped them close the gap late as Andre Curbelo had 14 points and 7 rebounds, Tory San Antonio had 12 points and 8 rebounds, Victor Rosa had 10 points.

The race for the consolation championship started the day in thrilling fashion as it took three overtimes for the Dominican Republic to beat Mali 110-108. The pool is not fixed. It is just the players who have committed so far. I would expect some of those young players to be named to the select squad this summer and then to see a few more names added over the course of the year and possibly some of the other players to be removed.

I don't think Embiid will be added though as I am not sure if he is a citizen yet. Towns has also been claimed by another country because Calipari hates America.

Saturday marks the start of the U17 Girls' World Championship in Belarus. The United States is not the defending champions in this event after a very poor cycle two years ago, but figure to be the favorites in this one. FIBA has all of the group stage games on their YouTube channel.

Issues in Central America have halved the number of teams competing for spots in qualifying for the next AmeriCup. As a result, Belize is hosting El Salvador and Costa Rica in a three day round-robin. They edged El Salvador 71-67 in the Friday opener. The hosts have a number of former collegians as Devin Daly had 18 points and 8 rebounds, Charles Garcia had 16 points and 9 rebounds, and Darwin Carter had 10 points. Former collegian Robert Sandoval led the visitors with 23 points and 8 rebounds.
