Favorite Player Poll Sweet 16 - Duhon vs Gminski

A classic matchup of the #8 seed and the #9 seed. Too close to call. I expect to see many posts from folks extolling the virtues of their choice.

What do you want--flowers and chocolates?

G-Man, by virtue of the name alone. The Melvin Purvis of Duke Basketball.

G-Man telestrated Julio's mom once during a (blowout) game. That's good enough for me!

I'm showing my age but I had to go Duhon.

All you need to know about Duhon you can see from the two last plays in each Final Four he played in.

2001: Hands the ball off to Williams, remembering it was a dream of his to throw the ball in the air after winning it all.
2004: After all the BS that happened during that game, Duhon still shot a 3 as time expired. We were down 4 and he could have done nothing, but he never stopped fighting.

G-Man wins my vote. Duhon was one of my favorites, though.

Shot...and MADE...the three-pointer, in what is very likely to be considered the greatest shot in Duke history (to many in betting crowd).

Ya, that shot "transferred anywhere from $30 million to $100 million from those who bet on UConn to cover the point spread to those who bet on Duke to cover, as estimated by those closely tied to the sports gambling business [...] The Duhon shot caused a $630,000 positive swing for BetCBSports.com, an online sportsbook based in Costa Rica."

Spreads aside, the shot I'll always remember was that reverse lay-up in 2004 @ UNC. The picture on the front page of The Daily Tar Heel the next day was priceless: Duhon in mid-flight, and dozens of UNC students behind the basket with expressions of dawning fear and panic. Can anybody find me a copy of that pic?

Ah that was a great moment. I was watching the game with about 5 Tar Heel fans and I was one of only two Blue Devils. I was wearing a black 21 jersey (that had originally been for Langdon). When he made that shot I just stood up and pointed to my chest, doing a couple jersey pops that would get Ewing in a lot of troube.

That game is available on iTunes for $1.99 btw. Good investment imho.

I voted for Gminski, who graduated a year ahead of me.

I've always liked Chris, however, and he's about to go down, so here are a few Duhon bits from wikipedia:

Second winningest player in Duke history, behind only Shane (averaged over 30 wins per year)

He left as the only Atlantic Coast Conference player to score 1,200 points, 800 assists, 475 rebounds, 300 steals, and 125 three-point shots.

In 2005, after Hurricane Katrina, Duhon's Stand Tall Foundation handed out over 3,000 boxes of supplies worth $450,000 for residents of his hometown Slidell.

    Talking Gminski

This one isn't even close for me. Gminski was the guy I imitated as a kid, 3, 2 1....Gminski at the buzzer, it's gooooood!!!! Only problem is I didn't grow up to be 6'10".

He's also the reason I started hating UNC. He NEVER fouled out of a game in college. But he was unjustly thrown out of one. UNC was behind and Dean called for a press / trap. Some scrub off the bench was mugging the G-Man but no foul was called. Gminski tried to pivot and his elbow grazed the cheek of the scrub and he fell out like someone had shot his momas dog! (They awarded the UNC player the Tony for best performance in a game of musical chairs!) They called Gminski for a foul, but the whole time the UNC player was being tended to by the doctors Dean was talking to the official. (Instead of seeing if his "badly" injured player was okay.) A good 10 minutes after the incident the ref (Lenny Wertz if I recall) threw Mike Gminski out of the game. My first view of UNC bias / favoritism and still a good reason to hate light blue.

    This poll is now closed.

A fairly close battle, but a solid win for the G-man. He now advances to the Great 8 where he will face Jason Williams.
