Marshall had a very efficient 9 points and 12 rebounds in 21 minutes as the United States beat Panama 97-56 to start their AmeriCup campaign. Jonathan Holmes and Darrun Hilliard had 17 points each, the grizzled veteran of the group, Reggie Williams, had 13 points, and Jameel Warney had 10 points and 7 rebounds. In the loss, Gary Forbes, who you may remember from ACC play before he moved to UMass and the NBA, had 19 points and ex-Texas State player Tony Bishop had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The next game against Uruguay will be on ESPNU at 7:30pm ET on Tuesday. These games will also be on ESPN3 (times EDT):
    Dominican Republic vs Panama, 5:00pm
    Canada vs Venezuela, 6:30pm
Argentina vs US Virgin Islands, 9:00pm

The other game in Montevideo went to the hosts 66-57. Uruguay was happy to have their two biggest stars together for this tournament as Jayson Granger had 23 points and 8 assists and ex-NBA player Esteban Batista had 17 points and 9 rebounds with captain Bruno Fitipaldo adding 16 points. Ex-DII player Gelvis Solano had 13 points for the Dominican Republic.

Back in Group B, Canada looked ready to go out with a whimper against Argentina early, but fought back only to be forced into overtime and a 92-86 loss. Facundo Campazzo paced the hosts with 23 points and 6 assists as Gabriel Deck added 20 points and 9 rebounds and ex-George Washington player Patricio Garino had 20 points. Ex-Baylor player Brady Heslip dialed it up from distance with 24 points, the ex-ACC guys chipped in as Xavier Rathan-Mayes had 17 points and Olivier Hanlan had 16 points, and Andrew Nicholson had 12 points and 18 rebounds after briefly looking like the star of the tournament before disappearing in the second half of the previous game despite his NBA pedigree. The disappointing results can all be reversed if they can get a result on Tuesday as the US Virgin Islands could not summon enough magic late against Venezuela, losing 86-84. Kobe Bryant must have given his cousin John Cox a challenge too as he had 23 points to lead Venezuela for a second straight game and ex-NAIA player Nestor Colmenares had 15 points and 14 rebounds. Walter Hodge had another big game with 24 points and 7 assists, ex-Murray State player Cuthbert Victor had 17 points, and Khallid Hart of Marist had 13 points. Argentina can technically manipulate the results of the group by losing to the US Virgin Islands regardless of the result of the first game, which Canada must win to have a chance at advancing.

Marshall got the start as the United States knew that they would probably have their toughest test of the group against the hosts. Uruguay started well but the United States took the lead at the half. A tight third quarter left the game tied, but some important shots from distance helped the United States get the 74-66. Marshall fouled out as he played 15 minutes, getting the task of trying to slow down Esteban Batista, who had 22 points and 14 rebounds. The other starts also chipped in as Jayson Granger had 17 points and 6 assists and Bruno Fitipaldo had 15 points and 8 rebounds, but the hosts could have used a little more efficiency. C.J. Williams had 16 points, Reggie Hearn had 15 points, and Darrun Hilliard had 13 points. This was a good test for Jeff Van Gundy and they got it done. He now knows what to expect in a hostile environment in future road qualifiers as the team is likely to make a return trip to Montevideo, where the visiting team faces a loud whistling crowd while on offense. It will be interesting to see future roster compositions, but I am thinking that having one or two roster spots for American players who have played frequently in these specific leagues could be a big advantage for preparing for unfamiliar environments and personnel.

Earlier in the day, the Dominican Republic stayed alive with an 86-64 win over Panama. Ex-NAIA player Sadiel Rojas had 18 points and 12 rebounds and Angel Delgado of Seton Hall had 17 points and 13 rebounds. In the loss, Tony Bishop had 20 points, ex-South Alabama player Javier Carter had 12 points and 8 rebounds, and Gary Forbes had 10 points. After the USA game, the Dominican Republic knew that they would need a big win to advance with a loss meaning that the United States advances, while Uruguay needs a specific margin of victory for the Dominican Republic to advance via tiebreaker.

The game against the Dominican Republic will be on ESPNU at 5:00pm ET on Wednesday. Uruguay and Panama will play at 7:30pm ET on ESPN3.

Venezuela knew that a win would give them the advantage for advancing from Group B while Canada needed a big win to flip tiebreakers into their favor. The score was tied heading into the final frame as Canada got a 75-66 margin, which prevented both teams from staying alive. Xavier Rathan-Mayes had 22 points, Andrew Nicholson had 12 points, and Olivier Hanlan had 11 points. John Cox finished a strong tournament with 22 points in the loss. That result meant that the second game had no bearing on anything so Argentina put on a show for the home fans and the US Virgin Islands rested some players in a 104-58 loss. Nicolas Brussino, the only player currently under NBA contract for the hosts, had 15 points and 6 rebounds and Patricio Garino had 15 points and 6 rebounds. Jahmia Simmons, who played for Arkansas State this season, but is transferring, had 13 points and 6 rebounds in the loss.

I watched the game and it was really entertaining. Batista, the first Uruguayan to play in the NBA, took Marshall to school! I felt bad for Marsh, he had no answer for Batista's nimble footwork. But, to Marshall's credit, despite the foul trouble, he kept grinding and got some key stops down the stretch before he fouled out. This squad got knocked back early, and were down 10 in the first quarter, as we struggled to shoot and run decent offense against their zone. Former Heels Kendall Marshall and Larry Drew II are on the team. Marshall showed some of his patented floor length fast break passing ability but the dude still cannot shoot. He passed up many wide open looks, Uruguay clearly had him well scouted. Drew was better, and he made some big buckets in the second half when the game was in the balance. CJ Williams from NC State, who I don't even remember as a player, led the scoring with 16. The atmosphere was really tense. It's classic to watch Van Gundy pacing the sideline with this crew.

Marshall and the United States took care of business with a 72-56 win over the Dominican Republic. He had 5 points in 18 minutes as he got another start. Some familiar names led the team in scoring as CJ Williams had 15 points, Jameel Warney had 13 points and 9 rebounds, and Darrun Hilliard had 13 points. In the loss, ex-Eastern Washington player Adris De Leon had 15 points.

The result made the other game meaningless, but Uruguay did win one more for the home fans 79-68 against Panama. Jayson Granger had 20 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists. In the loss, Tony Bishop had 19 points and 7 rebounds, Javier Carter, Geno Luzcando of Idaho State had 11 points and 8 assists, and Gary Forbes had 10 points.

EuroBasket had half of the teams start their tournaments today.

Group A is being held in Helsinki. Slovenia started the day well and got the 90-81 win as Goran Dragic took command with 30 points. Mateusz Ponitka had 22 points and 13 rebounds in the loss as naturalized ex-Western Kentucky player A.J. Slaughter had 12 points and 6 assists and Przemek Karnowski, who just finished his career at Gonzaga, had 11 points. Greece is missing a number of players, but Nikos Pappas helped them to a 90-61 win over Iceland with 20 points. Georgios Printezis, the record holder for having his draft rights traded, had 17 points and ex-NBA player Kostas Papanikolaou had 10 points. Ex-Maryland player Haukur Palsson had 21 points in the loss. Hosts Finland had to wait until the end of the day to play in front of a raucous crowd, jetting out to an early lead before France got back into the game and the excitement continued into overtime, where the hosts left with an 86-84 win. Lauri Markkanen made a big first impact with 22 points and 7 rebounds, ex-Providence player Tuukka Kotti had 14 points, and ex-Albany player Jamar Wilson, who is naturalized by marriage, had 12 points and 6 assists. France is missing big names, but the starting backcourt tried to pick up the slack as Evan Fournier had 25 points and Nando De Colo had 21 points and 6 rebounds.

Group B is in Tel Aviv. Dennis Schroder was asked to take the lead for Germany for the first time and he seized the opportunity with 32 points and 7 assists in a 75-63 win over Ukraine. Lithuania has had a weird training camp and it showed in a 79-77 loss to Georgia, although the upset is not that big considering the strength of Georgia's lineup even though they lack depth. Ex-NBA player Tornike Shengelia had 29 points, ex-San Diego player Duda Sanadze had 13 points, and naturalized ex-Memphis player Mike Dixon had 12 points and 7 assists. Mindaugas Kuzminskas had 18 points and 7 rebounds in the loss. Israel had the home support, but they could not keep up with Italy in a 69-48 loss. Marco Belinelli had 18 points and ex-NBA player Luigi Datome had 16 points and 8 rebounds while another NBA player, Omri Casspi, had 18 points and 9 rebounds in the loss.

Marshall and the United States will be back in action in the first semifinal on Saturday against the US Virgin Islands at 5:30pm ET with the game on ESPN3. The second semifinal between Argentina and Mexico will be on ESPN3 at 8:00pm. It looks like the medal games on Sunday will be on ESPNU.

The other two groups started play at EuroBasket today.

Group C is being held in Cluj Napoca and started with Croatia's 67-58 win over Hungary. The NBA players led the way as Bojan Bogdanovic had 23 points and 7 rebounds and Dario Saric had 15 points. Spain opened with a solid 99-60 win over Montenegro. The other brothers on the team led the way this time as Willy had 18 points and 9 rebounds and Juancho had 13 points in the Hernangomez show and Pau Gasol started his chase for the scoring record with 10 points and 8 rebounds. Nikola Vucevic had 16 points in the loss as the team is nearly at full strength finally. Hosts Romania kept it close until halftime against the Czech Republic before losing 83-68. Vojtech Hruban had 25 points and Tomas Satoransky had 20 points, 13 rebounds, and 6 assists as the only active NBA player in the game. Ex-American player Vlad Moldoveanu had 24 points and 8 rebounds in the loss.

Eric Boateng did not play for Great Britain as they started Group D play in Istanbul with a 103-90 loss to Belgium as they kept it close for a while. Ex-Iowa player Gabe Olaseni had 21 points and 11 rebounds, Dan Clark had 20 points and 6 rebounds, ex-Duquesne player Kieron Achara had 14 points, and Luke Nelson, who just finished his UC Irvine career, had 11 points. Incoming NBA player Bogdan Bogdanovic had 30 points, 2011 draft pick Milan Macvan had 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Boban Marjanovic did what he does best at this level with 13 points and 6 rebounds in limited minutes. The non-NBA Bertans brother Dairis had 23 points and 6 rebounds as Davis had 16 points and 6 rebounds while Kristaps Porzingis had 18 points. The day ended with a disappointing 76-73 loss for hosts Turkey against Russia. In the loss, incoming NBA player Cedi Osman had 28 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 steals and ex-NBA player Semih Erden had 11 points.

Marshall and the United States had their second game in hostile territory with the final in Cordoba. Argentina took the early lead and built a big one in the second half, but the team rallied to take the lead late and hang on to an 81-76 win. He had a quiet 15 minutes as the team finally settled on a rotation when it mattered. Jameel Warney had 21 points and 7 rebounds, Darrun Hilliard had 15 points and 6 rebounds, Reggie Hearn had 14 points and 6 rebounds, and Xavier Munford had 10 points. Nicolas Brussino, the only active NBA player in the game besides Marshall, had 26 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists. It was a good experience for the United States, who got the win and a tremendous education for what to expect in the latter stages of qualifying as the draw presents another chance to play in Argentina in the future. The team showed impressive fight when a 20 point deficit could have led to them folding in front of a crowd cheering against them. Some of these players will definitely be on the list of players wanted for qualifying games while others should not be involved again.

The last game of the day ended up deciding last team from this group to advance as Turkey beat Belgium 78-65 after pulling away late in front of the home crowd. Group play ended in the first two EuroBasket groups. Slovenia rolled past France 95-78 to win Group A as Goran Dragic had 22 points and 8 assists. The players with NBA experience on the other side also had solid games as Nando De Colo had 16 points, Boris Diaw had 13 points, Kevin Seraphin had 12 points, and Evan Fournier had 11 points. The next game was for the last spot to advance from this group as Greece got a challenge, but pulled away from Poland to win 95-77. Kostas Sloukas had 26 points, ex-Florida player Nick Calathes had 24 points and 10 assists, and draft rights trade bait Georgios Printezis had 14 points and 6 rebounds. Damian Kulig had 26 points and 7 rebounds. The last game was meaningless for the final standings, but Finland did entertain their fans and come back to deny Iceland their first win 83-79. Lauri Markkanen continued to impress with 23 points and 2007 draft pick Petteri Koponen continued to take on a bigger role with 10 points and 6 assists. In the loss, former California high schooler Jon Stefansson had 13 points, ex-LIU player Martin Hermansson had 12 points, ex-Maryland player Haukur Palsson had 11 points, and Kristofer Acox, who just finished his career at Furman, had 10 points.

The NBA players led the way as Jonas Valanciunas had 27 points and 15 rebounds and Donatas Motiejunas had 15 points, while Dennis Schroder had 26 points and recent draft pick Isaiah Hartenstein had 10 points. Georgia could have advanced with a win, but their comeback came up short against Italy in a 71-69 loss. Naturalized ex-Memphis player Mike Dixon did everything he could with 29 points and ex-NBA player Tornike Shengelia had 12 points and 6 rebounds. In the win, Marco Belinelli had 15 points and the other player with NBA experience, Luigi Datome had 14 points. Chelsea Gray is among the players invited to the upcoming USA Basketball training camp. If her team makes it to the WNBA Finals as expected, she will not be able to participate. USA Basketball has a tricky situation managing time on the women's side since most players play year round. Some players here will be sacrificing money on their overseas contracts to delay their arrivals abroad. I would prefer that these camps be held during the breaks in the European club season for international play in Europe, where they can train together and play some European national teams. They could then have a United States based camp before WNBA training camp for players who are not playing overseas or were playing in Asia. The problem with that is that a number of college coaches are involved in the process and those times conflict with their schedules.

It was the final day of the group stage at EuroBasket as Group C started with a meaningless game that went to Croatia 107-69. The players with NBA experience led the way as Bojan Bogdanovic had 25 points, Dario Saric had 18 points and 10 rebounds, Roko Ukic had 12 points and 6 assists, and Dragan Bender had 10 points and 6 rebounds. For the Czech Republic, ex-Seton Hall player Patrik Auda had 19 points and ex-Fairleigh Dickinson player Kamil Svrdlik had 10 points. Hungary ended any faint hopes of jumping one place in the standings after losing to Spain 87-64. The favorites took no break as Pau Gasol had 20 points and 8 rebounds, Willy Hernangomez had 15 points, Sergio Rodriguez had 15 points and 7 assists, and Marc Gasol had 10 points and 6 rebounds. That result made the final game meaningless, but Romania was not able to give the fans something to celebrate as they lost to Montenegro 86-69. In the win, ex-Georgia player Nemanja Djurisic had 14 points and 7 rebounds, 2013 draft pick Bojan Dubljevic had 13 points and 9 rebounds, and Nikola Vucevic had 11 points and 6 rebounds. Ex-Clemson player Catalin Baciu had 11 points and 6 rebounds in the loss.

Alexey Shved led Russia again with 30 points and 8 assists and Timofey Mozgov had 11 points and 11 rebounds. Serbia then needed to win to keep their hopes of topping the group alive, which they did by beating Belgium 74-54. Slovenia (Luka Doncic, Goran Dragic) vs Latvia (Kristaps Porginzis) playing a high-scoring entertaining FIBA game right now. It's 55-51 Latvia at the half.

Some people believe Doncic should be the #1 pick in the 2018 NBA draft, ahead of guys like Porter, Bagley, Bamba, and Ayton.
