The USA U19 Men's team finished the group stage with a 98-65 win over Italy as it took until the second half for the team to really pull away. P.J. Washington had a near perfect game.

In the other game in the group, Angola beat Iran 70-48. Eric Amandio joined Silvio De Sousa and Rifen Miguel as Florida high schoolers having good games in the win.

Standings: United States 3-0, Italy 2-1, Angola 1-2, Iran 0-3

In Group A, Argentina fended off New Zealand 74-70. Some players who will be more known in NCAA circles soon, Quinn Clinton, Sam Waardenburg, and Isaac Letoa, had good games in the loss. France dominated the second half to beat South Korea 87-55.

In Group B, Germany beat Egypt 66-40 as the hosts did not play their star. Lithuania topped the group with a 96-57 win over Puerto Rico. Local collegian Luis Lopez and Liberty's Jorge Pacheco led the way in the loss.

Standings: Lithuania 3-0, Germany 2-1, Egypt 1-2, Puerto Rico 0-3

In Group C, Rui Hachimura and Japan tested Canada early, but fell 100-75. Canada should feel good about getting both Lindell Wigginton and RJ Barrett firing and Danilo Djuricic found his range along with Abu Kigab and Nate Darling, but they have been placed in the most difficult section of the bracket. Spain beat Mali 62-43 as both teams had an eye on the knockout stages with their places in the standings already secured.

A number of news outlets had this for a while, but it is now official. Jeff Van Gundy will be the head coach of the USA team until the summer 2019, taking charge of the team for the upcoming AmeriCup and the all World Cup Qualifiers. Assistants for the AmeriCup have been named, but they may not continue during qualifiers. This is about what we could reasonably expect for a hire for this particular job.

The USA U19 Men's team started the important rounds of the competition, racing out to a big lead on Mali and coasting to a 117-69 win. P.J. Washington continues to lead the way as Brandon McCoy had a big game. They get another rest day on Thursday before the rest of the knockout stages are played on three straight days over the weekend.

The other games started with Canada controlling the second half to beat Angola 87-65. Danilo Djurisic and Abu Kigab both shot well from outside, which helped RJ Barrett and Lindell Wigginton. Silvio De Sousa continued to lead Angola. The next game may have been the best of the day with a close game going right to the end before Italy could get the late basket to win 57-55. Rui Hachimura nearly carried Japan himself as he also got help from JC player Isaiah Taylor who you will see in boxscores as Shinsaku Enamoto. Eric Vila and Spain continue to fly under the radar a bit, but they beat Iran comfortable 70-50. Lithuania was not messing around, quickly jumping on South Korea on their way to a 110-63 win. France was not as convincing, but led wire to wire in an 84-66 win as they did get Gonzaga's Killian Tillie more involved, which could be key in their next game. Fairfield-bound Jesus Cruz led the way for Puerto Rico as they got another solid game from Liberty's Jorge Pacheco. Oscar Da Silva and Germany looked to be in good shape against New Zealand, but Tai Wynyard, Sam Waardenburg, and company fought back and only lost 72-65. The hosts had a great start in front of their fans to close the day, but Argentina held their nerve and withstood a final charge to win, 72-67. The other incoming Fairfield freshman, Omar El-Sheikh, in the tournament had a solid game for Egypt.

With the move to the quarterfinals, the U19 Men's World Championship will be on ESPN3 with consolation games still on FIBA's YouTube Channel. The United States faces Germany at 3:15pm ET but the other games are worth a watch too. Lithuania has been very consistent as they face Italy at 7:45am ET. Argentina and Spain then play at 10:15am. On the United States side of the bracket, the France-Canada game at 12:45pm should be exciting.

FIBA's YouTube channel will have extensive coverage of the U20 Women's European Championship. Angela Salvadores and Spain open their tournament against Poland and can be seen here live at 3:45pm ET on Saturday or on replay:

The USA U19 Men's team knew that they would be getting their first big test in the quarterfinals. The game was close throughout the first half as Germany surged into the lead early in the second half before the Americans regathered themselves and raced to an 81-59 final margin. This was the first time a crunchtime lineup was established as Austin Wiley and Carsen Edwards provided key minutes. Ferdinand Zylka was the unexpected star for Germany alongside Stanford-bound Oscar Da Silva.

The semifinal will be on ESPN3 at 2:30pm ET on Saturday.

The other quarterfinals games started with an upset as Italy fended off Lithuania 73-68. Tadas Sedekerskis had a good game, but his usual running mate struggled mightily and they could not overcome it. Spain continues to fly under the radar as the only other undefeated team, but Texas A&M's Eric Vila helped them beat Lautaro Lopez and Argentina 70-58. The next game was probably the most anticipated of the round with Canada building a lead going into the half and hanging on to it 73-67. RJ Barrett carried the team on his shoulders in the absence of Lindell Wigginton, which is a storyline worth watching for Saturday. Abu Kigab had another good game as Grant Shepherd, who has prepped in Florida, but is heading to a CIS school for college, also chipped in off the bench. Gonzaga's Killian Tillie emerged for his team alongisde Bathiste Tchouaffe, but it was not enough.

In the consolation bracket, Puerto Rico beat Angola 63-59. Jorge Pacheco of Liberty continued a solid tournament while junior college player Levy Miguel and Florida prepster Rifen Miguel led the way in the loss. Taane Samuel had another good game, continuing to overshadow some of his DI teammates like Tai Wynyard and Quinn Clinton as New Zealand beat Mali, who received decent contributions from Kansas high schooler Blaise Keita, 87-63. Hosts Egypt are pursuing a prize for their fans, starting with a 57-53 win over Iran. Japan controlled the first and fourth quarters, beating South Korea 77-64 despite struggles in the middle of the game. Rui Hachimura of Gonzaga continues to be one of the standout individuals, getting some help this time from Yudai Nishida and Georgia Tech commit Avi Schafer.

Angela Salvadores and the Spain U20 team started the European Championships with an 84-59 win over Poland. Angela led all scorers with 27 points in 26 minutes. Maria Conde, who has left Florida State, had 13 points and Maite Cazorla of Oregon had 11 points. UTEP player Zuzanna Puc had 16 points and 6 rebounds in the loss.

As covered in its own thread, the U19 Men fell to Canada 99-87. Payton Pritchard emerged alongside P.J. Washington as Austin Wiley and Carsen Edwards had good games again, but it was not enough. It would be easy to say that it's all due to RJ Barrett going nuts, but he fouled out with the game still well within reach and the team's starting point guard still injured. Abu Kigab, in foul trouble himself seized the reigns of his team as they tried to get Nate Darling and Tommy's incoming freshman Danilo Djurisic open shots. The play of Grant Shephard, who would probably get some solid D1 offers now if he was not already planning on heading to the University of British Columbia, battled inside all night and made enough key plays down the stretch.

The team now has to play for the bronze medal and can be seen on ESPN3 at 12:00pm ET with the final also broadcast there at 2:30pm ET.

In the other semifinal, Spain looked to be cruising early, but Italy fought back twice, edging the final frame to win 66-63. Eric Vila of Texas A&M had a solid effort in the loss as Italy surprised with a finals place after losing key players very late in the process.

Teams were still fighting for 5th place as Lithuania beat Facundo Corvalan and Argentina 85-77. France may have still been reeling from their loss the day before as Germany smoked them 86-60.

The battle in the bottom half was pretty strong. Fairfield-bound Jesus Cruz led Puerto Rico, getting help from prepster Nick Guadarrama and Leandro Allende of the Citadel as they beat New Zealand 74-70. New Zealand was led by their usual trio of NCAA players as Tai Wynyard, Quinn Clinton, and Sam Waardenburg had good games. The other game went into overtime, but Rui Hachimura and Japan left the hosts empty-handed with the 76-73 win. Ahmed Khalaf did have a good game in the loss as the other future Fairfield player Omar El-Sheikh chipped in as well.

Teams are fighting to avoid last place. Silvio De Sousa led Angola again as they beat Mali 73-54. Amirhossein Azari had a great game for Iran, but it was Kim Jin-Young who was the difference as South Korea won 81-77.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Ax5Uf2y288

The USA U19 Men's team had a medal to salvage and they wasted no time jumping on Spain and rolling to a 96-72 win. Payton Pritchard was a mild surprise for the all-tournament team as Carsen Edwards was probably the breakout player for the team while Immanuel Quickley and Cam Reddish ended their tournaments on a strong note heading into the college selection process. Ignacio Rosa led Spain while Eric Vila of Texas A&M finished a strong tournament.
    http://www.fiba.basketball/world/u19...ore_statistics

The last game of the day was for the title and Canada did not show any hangover from their big win, beating Italy 79-60. RJ Barrett did not need to do as much for his team, which welcomed Lindell Wigginton back and got good games from Abu Kigab and Nate Darling again.
    http://www.fiba.basketball/world/u19...ore_statistics

The day started with the battle to avoid last place as Ehsan Samadi and Iran beat Mali, which was led by Kansas high schooler Blaise Keita, 70-61. Silvio De Sousa put in one last monster effort for Angola as they edge South Korea 58-56 for 13th place. New Zealand spoiled one last party for the home fans as Tai Wynyard and Quinn Clinton finished strong tournaments in the 85-69 win. Mohamed Youssef led Egypt. While he did not have a particularly noteworthy tournament, it is worth mentioning that Callum McRae attends the same high school that Nick Horvath teaches at and presumably he has played a role in Callum's development as a part of the basketball scene in the Palmerston North area. The player who has had to be the most consistently excellent for his team would be Gonzaga's Rui Hachimura as his efforts were not enough for Japan in a 68-67 loss to Puerto Rico. The veterans led the way in the win as Jorge Pacheco of Liberty got help from Fairfield-bound Jesus Cruz and Leandro Allende of the Citadel. Gonzaga's Killian Tillie played well in the latter stages of the tournament for France as they beat Argentina 69-63 for 7th place. In a battle of teams that had expected medal contention, Germany beat Lithuania 80-74 for 5th place. Stanford fans should be happy about what Oscar Da Silva has shown while former St. John's player Richard Freudenberg finally had a solid game after struggling to find his scoring touch.

Angela Salvadores and the Spain U20s finished the group stage of the European Championship with a 65-36 win over Belgium. Angela had 3 points in 20 minutes. FIBA's YouTube channel will also cover the upcoming Centrobasket Women tournament, which will be a bigger deal for us in future years when Duke players are not prevented from playing due to academic commitments.

USA Basketball announced a tryout roster for a U23 team team, including Rebecca Greenwell and Lexie Brown. The 40 players, which also include Azura Stevens, will convene on the last day of July to pick a roster for a new tournament featuring teams from Canada, Australia, and hosts Japan. This replaces the World University Games team as representation for that event will be handled by Maryland for the women just like Purdue will represent the men.

Right after one U19 World Championship and before the other one, qualification for the two 2019 editions already started in Guam. FIBA's integration of the Asia and Oceania regions continues with the top two teams in the Oceania U17 championships qualifying for the 2018 Asia U18 championships that determine U19 qualification.

On the girls' side, the usual beatdowns started immediately with these first day scores: Australia 163 Tahiti 13, New Zealand 139 Guam 34, Samoa 120 Marshall Islands 12, New Caledonia 118 Palau 29. The worst of the rest were probably Australia beating the Marshall Islands 166-3 and New Zealand beating Palau 135-8. The all-important semifinals saw Australia pound Guam 154-12 and New Zealand beat Samoa 81-36 and then Australia won the championship 81-60.
    Final Standings:
    Australia
    New Zealand
    Samoa
    Guam
    New Caledonia
    Tahiti
    Marshall Islands
    Palau

The first day of the boys' tournament was similarly lopsided: Australia 155 New Caledonia 32, Samoa 126 Palau 48, New Zealand 106 Tahiti 36, Guam 151 Marshall Islands 34. Australia also beat Palau 168-32 and Samoa 142-34 while New Zealand beat the Marshall Islands 125-33, but actually had a tough time with Guam. The semifinals saw New Zealand beat Samoa 96-58 and Australia beating Guam 155-39, allowing Australia to avenge last year's U18 defeat with a 93-55 win.
    Final Standings:
    Australia
    New Zealand
    Guam
    Samoa
    Tahiti
    New Caledonia
    Palau
    Marshall Islands

Antonio Vrankovic and Croatia start the Stankovic Cup on Wednesday. Does anyone know why this sort of thing never gets coverage? I get that Duke is an American university, but in men's basketball, they never seem to cover play for other national teams while other sports do cover internationals for other countries.

Teams continue to work towards qualifying for the 2019 U19 World Championship. Brazil was still suspended, so the field was more open for the South American U17 Boys' Championship in Lima, Peru. The first game of today was the most important as Ecuador beat Colombi 80-63 to grab the final place in next summer's U18 Americas Championship from this tournament. Chile, which has a legitimate DI prospect on their roster, surprised Argentina 70-60 to win the tournament, although both teams had already clinched their spots for next year yesterday.

    Argentina
    Ecuador
    Colombia
    Paraguay

I am going to keep on reporting on Bella Alarie as if she was one of our own. She had 7 points and 8 rebounds in 19 minutes as the USA U19 team started the World Championship with a 95-58 win over Mali.

The next game against China can be seen here live on Sunday at 12pm ET or as a replay:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-e7TrM72f-k

The other game in the group closed the day as China jetted off to an early lead on hosts Italy and withstood the encouragement of the home fans to win 74-63. China is playing without their star, who they named to the roster, but opted to send to their senior team.

The day started with a stunning Group D result as Japan came back to stun a completely cold Australia team 66-61. Australia star Ezi Magbegor had good game along with Chloe Bibby, but the team just could not find their shooting touch. Mexico only qualified due to the suspension of Brazil and Livia Gereben and Hungary smoked them 111-67.

In Group C, Canada had no issues beating South Korea 91-45. There are a lot of Canadian players heading to NCAA schools as Hailey Brown (Michigan), Alyssa Jerome (Stanford), Shaina Pellington (Oklahoma), and Sarah Donovan (Davidson) all reached double figures. The best game of the day may have been France's 69-60 win over Latvia. Loreen Kerboeuf led the way in the win as the game also featured a matchup of incoming Syracuse players in Maeva Djaldi-Tabdi and Digna Strautmane.

It was unclear if Russia would get their full strength team together, but their young stars joined and made an immediate impact in a 114-63 dismantling of Egypt. The other Group B game saw Puerto Rico hang with Spain for a while before running out of steam in the second half and losing 74-42 despite a good game from Pitt-bound Angelique Rodriguez.

The Boys' U16 African Championship just finished in Mauritius. Ideally, they would have like to have 12 or 16 teams, but they were stuck with 8, so they had a novel double round-robin group format to determine semifinalists. Mali beat Egypt 76-65, but both teams had already clinched their places in next year's U17 World Championship by beating Algeria and Tunisia respectively on Friday.
    Final Standings:
    Mali
    Egypt
    Algeria
    Tunisia
    Madagascar
    Rwanda
    Mozambique
    Mauritius

The first event with combined Asia and Oceania participation starts tomorrow with the FIBA Women's Asia Cup. The top division, which will include Australia and New Zealand, will qualify four teams to the World Championship, which provides the Tall Ferns with a way of qualifying that does not require that they beat the Opals. The B Division was slated to have two Oceania teams, which is good news for their development, but Samoa lost funding, so Fiji will join six teams from Asia in the quest to be promoted to the top division in future tournaments.
