Smile 2003 was a good year

Rich amber in color and, again, as with most barleywines, massive amounts of maltiness which balance the massive hop presence. A real sipper at 10.3% ABV when released and perhaps a bit higher after 5 years maturing. This was enjoyed at a tasting session with Lavabe after Christmas with a sharp cheddar and a few crackers as palate cleansers between our high gravity samples.
Please note that this was from a 2003 themed sampling night.

Truly a VERY enjoyable pairing with the cheddar.

    Smile On Wisconsin Red!

Reddish-brown and a pungent nose of fresh cherries. Can't figure out whether the "base" beer is a light brown ale or a darker wheat ale. My bet would be on the latter as it is rather opaque and cloudy. Doesn't really matter as the combination is sensational. Very much like any Belgian kriek/lambic. Moderately sweet with a hint of tartness. This was a 750 ml bottle shared with Lavabe as dessert, part 1, a day or two after Christmas. No food pairings as this was marvelous by itself. Anyone heading to Wisconsin this year?
I stayed away from reviewing this one, as I reviewed the "other" New Glarus high seed. If it weren't for that other one, this would be the top of the mark.

I don't get into too many fruit beers.

These two are exceptions. Just WOW!!

And yes, I have a friend from Wisconsin coming through today, bringing tidings of joy. If I only knew which ones he will be bringing! Looks like we'll also meet up later this year in Cincy.

Definitely a GREAT dessert brew, either stand alone, or with cheese, or even with a magnificent chocolate dessert (such as the old Carrboro favorite AURORA, which had a great torta di spuma).

This is a joy to try.

O'Fallon Smoked Porter-quite a treat to find a "leftover" from Brunchgate in the storage area last week. Dark brown with obvious smoky aroma and taste, perhaps a bit overdone. A hint of chocolate and expresso. Meaty-not fishy. An enjoyable evening brew with sausage, hard cheeses and crackers. Could have it with any smoked meat/fish, too. Probably 5-6% ABV.

Just read an article titled "Sustained Benefits in Vascular Function through Flavanol-Containing Cocoa in Medicated Diabetic Patients." I am not a diabetic, but it sure makes me think about heading out this evening and purchasing some Chocolate Stouts (for medicinal purposes, that is).

Wow, you sure know how to kick back and relax on a Sunday!

I hope you're enjoying a tasty malted beverage while you study...

Nah, having a Diet Pepsi so I can stay awake reading that stuff. The hops, malted barley and flavenoids and anti-oxidants come later this evening.

You make me feel a little less nerdy for reading a study on Boron Neutron Capture Therapy while downing a glass of lemon-lime seltzer water I think I'll have nice glass of 3 Buck Chuck Merlot this evening. Go Duke!!

I am several months behind on my journal reading-too many Brunchgates and MBB and WBB games. Maybe a tad too much PWing, too.

In 20 Minutes, I will be done with my first all grain brew ever. I don't care if it tastes like cat pee, it will be awesome. Today was very cool, did something I've never done before.
And it will taste way better than cat pee.

    Time to add the Fuggles!

I was not impressed with the Green Flash you left me. I am wondering if a Mendocino should be on the list. Also, I wonder if the Alaskan Amber should be somehow on the list.

Out of my sampler pack this was the only one that stood out. At least there were 3 of them. It's a hophead's brew, an amber ale with good body and nice color. The hop flavoring is what makes it stand out of course. I got their seasonal sampler and was mostly dissapointed, it was pricey for what the offered up. But the Roxy is a top notch beer that I'll buy again in the future.

Haven't had about half of these, but I like most of the ones I have tasted. I would've put West Coast IPA higher, but I have a bitterness sickness (which is why I love the amount of Barleywines). Not a fan of the Alaskan Smoked Porter, but I think that beer is like Wisconsin. You may not enjoy watching them, but you can't deny what they do on the court year in and year out and you certainly can't complain when they pull a high seed.

Russian River makes great brews, but they don't have the distribution to make it onto a list like this.

All in all a tough bracket that, IMO, is the most wide open of the bunch.

The three seed, Alaskan Smoked Porter, is my "dark brew" favorite to make it to the final four. Since the play in game is being played in Dayton, a couple of mid west non-mbc( non micro brew conference) beers such as Buckeye and Old Dutch should tangle. Obviously no chance to advance, but highly popular in their respective areas.
