KenPom Blog: Series on whether offense or defense controls various stats

    Interesting series here:

Things like whether the offense or defense has control over things like steal rate (answer: defense, perhaps not surprisingly). But what is surprising is how Boeheim is #2 on this list.

Coach K comes in first for offensive efficiency since 2002. Ol' Roy is #2. Interestingly, their defensive efficiency numbers are also similar, with Coach K #5 and Roy #7.

Warning: if you've got work to do today, don't look at Ken's posts until the weekend is here. In any event, Kedsy will be synthesizing and summarizing all of this by Monday, I expect.

Yes, this is very cool stuff. Some of the observations are real gems. I'm not going to go into the details here and now, but this stuff should be trotted out in post-game threads during the season. For example, according to Pomeroy, defenses have very little control over opponent's three-point percentage. So when NC State shoots 62% on its three-pointers, maybe we shouldn't get so down on Duke's defense. Defenses have more control over how many threes opponents attempt, and perhaps not coincidentally, Coach K's Duke teams have been really good (best of all the coaches he tracked) at keeping opponents from shooting a lot of threes. As I said, a lot of gems. Definitely worth a read.
