DeMarcus is getting a special Christmas gift, a new team. He goes from Monaco to Unicaja Malaga, which is in the EuroLeague and trying to recover from a poor start in the domestic league in Spain. This move proves why players who spend a large amount of time in Europe take up a second citizenship if possible. DeMarcus will not count against the extremely limited non-European/non-Cotonou player restrictions with his Serbian passport.

    Real Madrid game

Was in Madrid over the break and saw Real Madrid play Bosque Baskets, a German team. It was fun! Real Madrid's best player is Sergio Rodriquez, who was with the Trail Blazers for three years but never got a lot of burn. He's a good offensive player, but I could see him having trouble guarding NBA point guards. Madrid also had ex-NBAers Andres Nocioni (who didn't start) and Gustavo Ayun as well as some American players. Their best American was Jaycee Carroll, who had a great career at Utah State but whom I had not previously heard of. He was pretty good but is 32 and apparently will never get on an NBA roster.

The environment was a lot of fun - a big arena, enthusiastic crowd (including some Crazy-like "Berserkers" behind one of the baskets) and a very fun PA announcer. The game is *much* more physical than the NBA is now, IMO - Gustavo Ayon demonstrated that it is apparently impossible to get called for a moving pick in Spain.

I'd be curious about others' experience attending games outside of the US.

Jaycee Carroll is a really fun player to watch. He can really only play shooting guard, which is why it would never work for him in the NBA at his height. Obviously I have never been to these places to verify, but there are some even better environments than Madrid. Watching Brose play at home in Bamberg is apparently good. Then moving further east, Pionir and the much larger Kombank Arena are great places to watch the Belgrade powerhouses and several Greek arenas have crazy atmospheres. Kaunas in Lithuania is also supposed to be pretty good with less of a feeling of your life being in danger. A real experience for hoops enthusiasts would have to be in the Philippines, I imagine.

Those would all be really interesting places to go - I think Real Madrid is about as comfortable as you can get with foreign basketball. I met a number of guys - a bike rental shop employee, a few cabbies - who were really fanatical about both Spanish and US basketball. I really enjoyed the connection.

Scary story out of Italy, where two of Andre Dawkins's teammates were assaulted outside of a club. Ian Miller looks to be fine, but apparently Jerome Dyson sustained a concussion among other injuries and could be out for a while. Unlike say the NBA, where losing games doesn't kill your team, Torino certainly does not need any distractions right now as they try to avoid being relegated from Lega A to Lega Due.
