The busy European youth calendar each summer continued with the start of the two U18 Men's Championships. There is actually a Division C at the U18 level, which was played in Gibraltar earlier in the month, but teams there do not automatically move between divisions. Three teams will move from Division A to Division B and vice versa in 2016 after the results of this tournament. Division A is being played in Volos, Greece this year as sixteen teams look to win or at least survive for another summer. Twenty four teams are contesting Division B's title in three locations in Austria, Oberwart, Gussing, and Furstenfeld. Each competition starts with four groups for round robin play. As with many other competitions, Division A will be mostly shown on FIBA's YouTube channel. One interesting note to some people might be the fact that below the U20 level, the component parts of the United Kingdom compete separately instead of as a unified British team, which I still think is a silly idea here. Another interesting story is T.J. Leaf, who opted to suit up for Israel after being rejected for the United States U19 team. His teammates include the son of David Blatt.

There were some questions about her mastery of English. I am told those questions have been answered to the satisfaction of all concerned.

I was thinking when I saw this yesterday; isn't she missing out on something by not being on campus? I know the experience would be too great to turn down, so I'm not chiding her at all, just wondering about her not being at Duke yet with her other teammates.
Q "Why do you like Duke, you didn't even go there." A "Because my art school didn't have a basketball team."

Just speculating, but possibly she must play on these teams if she wants a shot at the Spanish Olympic team for 2016.

Angela Salvadores and Spain took a while to get going in the European U18 Championship as half the team was coming from practice and the other team was coming from the U19 World Championship. They faced a big halftime deficit in their opener against Russia, but settled in during the second half in Slovenia to win 70-63. Angela led her team with 19 points in 37 minutes as she also looks to defend the scoring title she won last summer. Florida State signee Maria Conde had 18 points and 9 rebounds and Charlotte signee Laia Raventos had 16 points and 6 rebounds.

The senior national team is a little bit too far away to think about right now. A lot of players just like to represent their country and feel obligated to do so when they have the opportunity even if nothing is directly at stake. Given the chance to play competitive games, I do not think that our braintrust minds her playing. Duke has never really been a place to discourage international play.

Angela Salvadores and Spain took on Poland and again needed to come back in the second half, as the game went into overtime before they won 50-46. That result also means that Spain will move on to the next round of the U18 European Championship, where two of the results from this stage will carry over. Angela had 9 points and 7 rebounds in 27 minutes. A couple of the other incoming NCAA players also had solid games as Maria Conde had 14 points and 14 rebounds and Laia Raventos had 10 points.
