The first thing to be decided at Eurobasket was the team that would take the last automatic spot in the final Olympic qualifying tournament. The Czech Republic breezed past Latvia 97-70. In the win, ex-NBA player Jan Vesely had 24 points and 6 rebounds, former draft pick Tomas Satoransky had 16 points, and ex-Seton Hall player Patrik Auda had 13 points. Latvia can still qualify for next summer if one of the European teams that has already qualified gets chosen as a host.

Agree, Spain was missing a ton of guys in this tournament (Marc Gasol, Serge Ibaka, etc.) and still won.

Assuming they qualify, I think France is still really scary. They could have beaten Spain in that semi, and if they get Noah back for the Olympics, they'd potentially be trotting out Tony Parker, Rudy Gobert, Nic Batum, Boris Diaw, Evan Fournier, et al.

It will be interesting to see what Spain does next summer in terms of adding back their missing players. It is unclear where the Scariolo/Ibaka relationship is right now, but Mirotic is a solid option even though he does not help the defensive situation. Their historical starting backcourt of Calderon and Navarro could want in and who knows what shape Ricky Rubio might be in by that time. Having Marc Gasol back will obviously help.

Noah has barely ever involved for France, so maybe counting on him is not a great idea. The frontcourt is obviously a strength of the team with the emergence of Lauvergne and Gobert. Ajinca should be back and perhaps Mahinmi. Seraphin is another player who historically finds excuses to not show up each summer. Their key question is age, especially if Parker hits a tough part of age related decline or if Diaw stays out of shape. A change of scenery could get Batum back to his best. Heurtel may have burned his bridges with the way he handled this summer, so they may rely on the return of Diot to back up Parker and De Colo as primary ball handler. Westermann may never get back to where people thought that he could be before his injury and then you are getting to players who probably are not good enough at this level, like Albicy, whose pass first game I do like.

We enter a period of multiple competitions with timezones that have the early games taking place at night in the United States. I will keep the updates lumped together by the local calendar day on which they occur.

The rest of the Olympic picture is about to be clarified as the FIBA Asia Championship started in Changsha in the Hunan province of China on Wednesday. The winner qualifies automatically with at least three other teams getting another chance next summer.

In Group A, defending champions Iran eased past Japan 86-48. India then beat Malaysia 102-73.

In Group B, Hong Kong beat Kuwait 87-50. Duncan Reid, who went through Canada's collegiate system, had 13 points and 13 rebounds in the win. Palestine, which has a strong starting lineup, but a weaker bench, used their stars in a stunning comeback for a 75-73 win over the Philippines. In the win, ex-Minnesota player Jamal Abu Shamala had 26 points and 15 rebounds and ex-Central Arkansas player Imad Qahwash had 17 points. Andray Blatche, by far the best naturalized player that any team has at its disposal, had 21 points and 12 rebounds in the loss.

In Group D, Lebanon made their return to international play by holding off Taiwan 92-87 in a wild affair. In the win, ex-Rice player Ahmed Ibrahim had 23 points and ex-DII player Ali Haidar and naturalized ex-Kent State player Jay Youngblood had 18 points each. In the loss, naturalized ex-Tulane player Quincy Davis had 23 points and 6 rebounds. An even wilder game took place in the other game as teams refused to let the day end with Qatar coming back and then finally prevailing in overtime 79-75 over Kazakhstan. The battle of the naturalized players mirrored the result as ex-Jackson State player Trey Johnson had 31 points and 14 rebounds while ex-Rider player Jerry Johnson could only counter with 26 points and 7 assists.

Wednesday was also the start of the COCABA Women's Championship in Cartago, Costa Rica. The teams there are trying to qualify for the 2016 Centrobasket tournament, which will determine qualifiers to the 2017 FIBA Americas Championship, which will then be used to determine the teams headed to Spain for the 2018 Women's Basketball World Cup.

In Group B, Mexico opened the day by beating Nicaragua 87-39. In the win, ex-Oklahoma State player Brisa Silva had 11 points and 7 assists. Next, Guatemala beat Panama 85-74. In the loss, Anneth Him-Lazarenko, who went through the college system in Canada, had 19 points and 10 rebounds, Shayra Brown, who just finished her career at Boston College, had 14 points and 9 rebounds, and ex-NAIA player Nancy Pierre had 10 points.

Rosters will come tomorrow, although they will probably mostly be a list of players since the organization level of women's basketball leagues in Central America is not the greatest and FIBA Americas is not really helping out in that regard.

awhom111, I defer to your expertise. I think the wild card is the fact that it is the Olympics, will more players, like Noah, want to participate because of the scope of the overall event? Interesting tidbit about tension between Ibaka and Coach Scariolo, Serge always felt a little bolted-on to that team, anyway. I'd love to watch Navarro again, I think he patented the Runner 3-Pointer.

I'd love to watch Navarro again, I think he patented the Runner 3-Pointer.
Parker extended the invite to Noah in the media earlier today so it could happen. I suppose a lot will depend on how his NBA season goes. Another factor that some international followers have pointed out is that some of the NBA players might not want to go through both qualifying and then the tournament in the same summer. Most coaches will not let guys sit out the qualifying and join the main squad just because they are NBA guys. It will be interesting to see how Jamal Murray is handled by whatever team drafts him.

As I understand it, Serge really does love Spain and the opportunities that it gave him as opposed to most other naturalized players. It was an interesting dynamic for Spain's braintrust because Mirotic was apparently considering asking FIBA to let him switch back to Montenegro if he did not get a fair shot at some point. Montenegro has quite the frontcourt (offensively at least) even without Pekovic, but their backcourt is pretty sorry without one of their naturalized players (Taylor Rochestie or Tyrese Rice).
