    Dukies Hooping Overseas 2014-2015 Edition

A new season means a new thread to follow former Duke basketball players plying their trade around the world, including a number of WNBA players who will be playing their primary season. Regular season games in a number of leagues are three short weeks away, so coverage between now and then will be focused on preseason games and a few more players who are likely to play overseas who have not finalized destinations yet. Coverage will be pretty similar to last year, although the added number of players this year will probably mean that I will cut back coverage on some of the pan-European competitions. Fortunately, coverage of overseas basketball in English continues to improve every season.

Here is where some of the players will be playing.

    Men's Team:
-Shelden Williams returns to Tianjin in China
-DeMarcus Nelson moves to Greece to play for Panathinaikos
-Marty Pocius and Nolan Smith will be teammates in Turkey with Galatasaray
-Josh Hairston starts his career in Switzerland with Massagno
-Presumably Nick Horvath will return to the Manawatu Jets in New Zealand, but their season will not start until next year.

    Women's Team:
-Sheana Mosch returns to action with Elitzur Holon in Israel
-Mistie Bass will play for Lattes-Montpellier in France
-Jess Foley and Kathleen Scheer will be teammates with the Adelaide Lightning in Australia
-Monique Currie will play for the Samsung Life Blux Minx in South Korea
-Karima Christmas will play for the Shinhan Bank S-Birds in South Korea
-Jasmine Thomas and Krystal Thomas will be teammates in Turkey with newly promoted Ormanspor
-Haley Peters will play for newly promoted Universitario de Ferrol in Spain
-Tricia Liston will play for CUS Cagliari in Italy

    Committed Players:
-Angela Salvadores will play for Rivas in Spain.

    Transferse:
-Jamal Boykin signed for newly promoted Gottingen in Germany
-Olek Czyz signed for Enel Brindisi, but failed the medical as he is rehabbing from an injury and had his contract voided
-Chloe Wells is playing for a still unnamed team in Israel
-Alexis Rogers is playing in the French second division for Leon Tregor

    Another preseason update:

Nolan Smith and Galatasaray played the championship of the exhibition mini-tournament in Italy. They faced the team renowned for potent offense and no defense and lost 110-88. Nolan had 22 points and 7 steals in 34 minutes as the team still is missing a number of players returning from national team duty. Ian Vougioukas added 10 points. In the win, ex-UConn player Jerome Dyson had 28 points, ex-Penn State player Jeff Brooks had 19 points, ex-DII player David Logan had 15 points, and ex-DII player Olaseni Lawal had 12 points.

Angela Salvadores and Rivas have started their preseason training. They played a pair of exhibitions against Dynamo Kursk from Russia although both teams are not quite playing with their final rosters. They lost the first game 71-52 and the second one 67-37. Angela had 6 points in the first game and 2 points in the second game, although the point totals that they posted do not agree with their reports of the final score, so that could be totally wrong.

Josh and his team played Spirou Charleroi for a second straight day on Sunday and lost to the Belgian team 73-66 this time. Josh had 11 points and 6 rebounds. On Monday, they finished the tournament with an 87-76 loss to Avtodor Saratov of Russia as Josh had 10 points. In the win, ex-Arkansas player Courtney Fortson had 17 points and 7 rebounds, ex-Samford player Travis Peterson had 12 points and 7 rebounds, and ex-Gonzaga player Micah Downs had 10 points.

  4. #4
Nolan Smith and Galatasaray were in Italy for one more preseason game against Dinamo Sassari. The game was quite wild as they fell behind early, only to storm back, and then hold on in the end for a 78-75 win. Nolan had 15 points and 7 assists as the players from the Turkish national team finally joined in with a few international players still on their way. In the loss, ex-DII player David Logan had 24 points and ex-Penn State player Jeff Brooks had 11 points.

  5. #5
Angela Salvadores and Rivas took on the Angolan national team as the defending champions of Africa tour Europe in preparation for the upcoming World Champions. Angela led her team with 21 points as they won 71-47.

    Some more signing news:
Lindsey Harding returns to overseas play after a year off. With her WNBA struggles last season, this might be a good idea to get herself back on track. She heads to Turkey again, this time with Edirnespor.

    Among players who transferred out:
-Taylor King signed in the British Basketball League (what will happen to the Glasgow rocks if the vote passes?) with the Cheshire Phoenix.
-Chelsea Hopkins returns to Bnot Hertzeliya in Israel.
-Alexis Rogers backed out of her deal with Leon Tregor in the French second division. It is not clear if she plans to play elsewhere or if she just is not playing.

  6. #6
Nolan Smith had an early injury scare, but came back as Galatasaray started their presason tournament in Croatia by losing 71-64 to Germany's Alba Berlin. Nolan had 13 points in 26 minutes as Marty Pocius did not play having recently just joined his teammates. In the win, ex-Xavier player Jamel McLean had 16 points, ex-Clemson player Cliff Hammonds had 13 points, and ex-Villanova player Reggie Redding had 11 points.

  7. #7
Angela Salvadores and Rivas played second division team Leganes and won 71-63 as they continue to prepare for the season. Angela tied for the team lead with 18 points. In the loss, ex-Towson player Dovile Miliauskaite had 17 points to lead her team.

Nolan Smith and Marty Pocius finally got the opportunity to take the court together as Galatasaray faced Nolan's old team Cedevita Zagreb. They lost a thriller 93-86 in double overtime, but both players played well while on the court at the same time. Nolan had 14 points in 37 minutes and Marty had 13 points in 27 minutes before fouling out. Sinan Guler, who was just on the Turkish national team had 15 points. In the win, former second round pick Tomislav Zubcic had 12 points and 6 rebounds and ex-NBA player Roko Ukic had 10 points.

In the win, ex-St. Bonaventure player Demetrius Conger had 23 points and rookie Devon Saddler from Delaware had 17 points.

  8. #8

Haley Peters and Universitario Ferrol had their first exhibition against second division team Arxil, winning 87-45. Haley led all scorers with 23 points and her fellow rookie Denesha Stallworth from Kentucky added 20 points.

Tricia Liston could not make her preseason debut after dealing with back issues.

  9. #9
Angela and Rivas faced the Angolan National Team again, this time winning by the closer margin of 59-55. Angela led all scorers with 15 points.

In the win, ex-Alabama player Richard Hendrix had 12 points and 7 rebounds, ex-Virginia Tech player Malcolm Delaney had 12 points, and ex-Kansas player Aaron Miles had 10 points and 8 assists.

Marty and Nolan could have had a game with three former Duke players as they had the third place game of their tournament against Panathinaikos. Unfortunately, DeMarcus Nelson was not able to continue practicing with the team and is back in Athens healing his shin. The two players led their teams in the 89-71 win as Marty had 17 points in 25 minutes and Nolan had 17 points in 24 minutes. Carlos Arroyo added 12 points. In the loss, ex-NBA player Esteban Batista had 22 points and 10 rebounds and ex-Maryland player James Gist had 13 points.

Josh and Massagno lost 92-71 in Italy to second division team Biella. Josh had 14 points. Auston Calhoun had 24 points and Jake Thomas had 13 points. In the win, ex-Xavier player Ben Raymond had 18 points and ex-Texas Tech player Alan Voskuil had 11 points.

Cleaning up some details on yesterday's games:

Tricia's team won their preseason game 104-50 over Nulvi from a lower division, but no further details are available.

Haley led her team with 19 points in the 70-53 win, but she did foul out early in the fourth quarter. Her fellow rookie, Denesha Stallworth from Kentucky had 12 points.

Marty and Nolan had a preseason game against fellow Turkish powerhouse Anadolu Efes and lost 73-56. Marty led all scorers with 15 points in 29 minutes and Nolan had 6 points in 17 minutes. In the win, recent draftee Dario Saric had 13 points and 7 rebounds.

Unfortunately, DeMarcus Nelson will be out for up to two months with his injury. The team has been looking for a few more players to round out the roster, but have not found anyone yet as the season approaches.

Daniel Ewing was one of the players rumored to be filling in for DeMarcus. Instead, he signed a short-term injury replacement contract back in France because Rodrigue Beaubois is out at least a month, with Le Mans Sarthe under a coach who both Daniel and DeMarcus have had. Here is the article from his new team:

Marty Pocius and Nolan Smith got to play a competitive game as teammates for the first time since being teammates at Duke. Both players joined Galatasaray in Turkey this offseason, a team that will be looking to have good seasons both domestically and in the EuroLeague. Their teammates include ex-Florida International and longtime NBA player Carlos Arroyo, ex-Saint Louis player Ian Vougioukas, ex-Midland Community College and brief NBA player Nate Jawai, Sinan Guler, who went to NAIA school Carroll College, and Furkan Aldemir, who was drafted 53rd in 2012 by the Los Angeles Clippers before a pair of trades moved his rights to the Philadelphia 76ers. Their first game was part of the Turkish Cup, which starts before the domestic league season with three games for each team in a group stage. On the women's side of the basketball world, seasons have still not started in a number of leagues, so the preseason is still in full swing.

It will pretty much be their toughest opposition all season, so it could be a good game to watch to see what she can do. There may be a replay of the game available sometime after it happens or highlights at least, but that is no guarantee.

On Thursday, Panathinaikos started their season with DeMarcus Nelson not in Greece. An injury he suffered in the team's preseason practices was initially thought to be fixable by rest, but instead he returned to the United States to undergo surgery on his right shin, prolonging the period he will need to recover. DeMarcus made a big move to the Greek powerhouse over the summer, where his teammates include ex-Maryland player James Gist, ex-Western Kentucky player A. J. Slaughter, ex-NBA player Esteban Batista and Antonis Fotsis, 2006 57th pick of the Minnesota Timberwolves Loukas Mavrokefalidis, and Georgios Papagiannis, who attended Westtown High School in Pennsylvania with the original intention of playing collegiately in the United States before signing a professional contract. Their first game was a difficult test, a single elimination Greek Cup quarterfinal game with hated rivals Olympiakos. With a number of players missing with lingering injuries and no fans in the home game due to incidents from last season, the team fell behind in the second half only to catch up late and move on with a 77-76 win. Batista had 12 points including the game winner. In the loss, ex-Hawaii player Matt Lojeski had 16 points, Georgios Printezis, whose rights were moved to the Atlanta Hawks this summer to mark the sixth time he has been traded since originally being picked 58th in 2007 by the San Antonio Spurs, had 13 points, ex-NBA player Vassilis Spanoulis had 12 points, and ex-Fordham player Bryant Dunston had 10 points.
