    Bittersweet story on YA Tittle

    From ESPN, The Magazine.

Tittle is now 87 and suffering from dementia and other, more physical, shortcomings. Even so, there is something about him that is endearing. It's a well-written piece by Seth Wickersham.

And then, there's the picture--the YA Tittle icon. Published in every paper in the country. I remember it well.

My favorite quarterback of all time. He could literally thread a needle (if it was big enough!) with a football. I used to wait in anticipation for him to hit the receiver coming across the middle at the goal line after the defender got picked off by the goalpost. Loved to watch his precision passing.

    Interesting side note

For those who may not know, the opposing player who put the hit on YA Tittle leading to the classic photo was none other than the late John Baker, who was the long-time sheriff of Wake County (Raleigh) NC.

Those with a greater historical knowledge of pro football in the 60s can likely provide more details.
