The FIBA Asia Cup started on Friday in Wuhan, China. This is not the full continental championship, but the winner will automatically qualify to the one next summer which will determine Olympic berths. The format is already a little odd with 10 teams normally, but Uzbekistan dropped out too late to find a replacement, so they had to start with 9 teams in 2 groups with 8 teams advancing to the quarterfinals. Different teams have different goals for the tournament with most not having their strongest teams available. Iran and the Philippines are both in the midst of preparing for the bigger tournament of the summer in Spain.
The tournament started with the one game in Group B for the day as Taiwan beat Jordan 85-63. The battle of naturalized players was won by ex-Tulane player Quincy Davis, who had 21 points and 17 rebounds as he was helped by 10 points from DII player Kevin Hu. On the other side, ex-DII player Rasheim Wright contributed 21 points from the naturalized player position.

Today marked the conclusion of the two European U20 Women's Championships. While this is not a youth category at the global level, it is the premier one at the European level with the Men's competitions also underway.

The top 16 teams were in the A division tournament in Italy. The teams were divided into 4 groups with the top 3 teams in group A and B advancing to Group E and the top 3 teams in group C and D forming Group F. Those teams played the 3 groupmates that they did not play in the first round to complete a round robin as results from the first stage carried forward. The top 4 teams in Group E and F moved on to the knockout stages starting with a quarterfinal round. Meanwhile, the original last place teams played one another in Group G. Those games ranked teams for the knockout round of bottom half of teams. The teams that finished 14th, 15th, and 16th are going to play in the B division next season instead of being able to play in the A division.

The final game of the tournament did not end up being a great one as two teams originally in Group B, France and Spain, squared off with France getting the revenge from the first game by holding off Spain 47-42 in overtime. On the other end of the tournament, Sweden and Greece were bound for the B division after Saturday's games and were joined by Belarus after the final set of games as Belgium just survived.

The premier European youth championships concluded Sunday with the A Division tournament concluding in Greece on the island of Crete. Turkey beat Spain in the final 65-57, but the key action was at the other end of the standings. The competition started with 4 groups of 5 teams in round robin play. The top 3 teams in each group moved on to form combined groups of 6 where the top 4 teams moved on to the quarterfinals and the other 4 fought for places 9 through 12. Teams eliminated in the first stage formed 2 new groups of 4, with the top 2 teams in each surviving in A Division for another summer. The bottom 4 teams then faced off knowing that only 1 could survive. Sweden and Hungary were already relegated to B Division after losing Saturday and were joined by Montenegro after the Czech Republic survived with an 83-55 win.

In the B Division tournament in Sarajevo, 14 teams clawed their way toward 3 spots that would allow them to be in A Division next summer. Teams played round robin in 2 groups with the top 2 teams advancing to the semifinals. The bottom team in each group got to play in the unexciting 13th place game while the other teams at least fought for 5th through 12th place. In the final, Jusuf Nurkic, a recent draft pick, led Bosnia and Herzegovina to the title with a 76-70 win over Belgium in front of the home fans. Of course those two teams already knew they were being promoted after Saturday's games and the team that would join them was Ukraine, which beat Belarus 77-62 in the third place game.

I know that many people are keeping an eye on the future of basketball in Canada. The fact is, while there is a ton of talent coming through, the steps that are going to need to be taken to develop the program will involve a few obstacles. Canada has the fortune of qualifying directly for the Americas-wide tournaments. On the flip side, that means that they have fewer competitive basketball games than their competitors in the region. They are trying to address that this summer. They have no competitive games to play, but they still opted to put together a team and are set to tour Europe and face a variety of national teams. This plan also reveals the other issue as developing young NBA players is great, but relying on them to show up for the team every summer is difficult (except for Joel Anthony, who wanted to show up but was told not to come). While it seems only a matter of time before Canada at least puts together a competitive international team, there is still a lot of work to be done.

Here is their roster for the upcoming tour:

The latest tournament to start in the Americas is the Centrobasket for Women in Monterrey, Mexico. 8 teams from the Caribbean and Central Americas are competing for 4 spots in next summer's hemisphere-wide tournament as teams also face the prospect of their elimination from Olympic contention. Cuba is also in position to use this tournament to prepare for the World Championships that are two months away. The 3 Caribbean qualifiers who had to play in the tournament earlier in the month made a few roster changes to bolster their squad for this more competitive tournament.

The day started in Group B, where the US Virgin Islands beat Jamaica 56-46. In the win, ex-Portland player Natalie Day had 24 points and 18 rebounds and ex-Southern Miss player Tanecka Carey had 10 points. In the loss, Shereesha Richards of Albany had 15 points and ex-St. John's player Shenneika Smith had 10 points and 6 rebounds. Cuba smashed El Salvador 78-31 in the other game.

After watching them offer up the only real competition our U18 team faced at the World Championships a few weeks back, and considering that they have 13 mostly young players in the NBA, Canada feels like a real sleeping FIBA giant. It looks like they are trying to establish the same kind of "program" that the US has established - making sure they get together every summer, keeping some coaching consistency, etc. It looks like Nash is currently serving as the GM of the operation, kind of the Colangelo role. It will be interesting to see if they can get it together. Here are the canucks currently in the NBA:

Joel Anthony: 2007–2014 Miami Heat, 2014–present Boston Celtics
    Anthony Bennett: 2013–present Cleveland Cavaliers
Samuel Dalembert: 2001–2010 Philadelphia 76ers, 2010–2011 Sacramento Kings, 2011–2012 Houston Rockets, 2012–2013 Milwaukee Bucks, 2013–2014 Dallas Mavericks, 2014-present New York Knicks
    Tyler Ennis: 2014–present Phoenix Suns
Cory Joseph: 2011–present San Antonio Spurs
Steve Nash: 1996–1998 Phoenix Suns, 1998–2004 Dallas Mavericks, 2004–2012 Phoenix Suns, 2012–present Los Angeles Lakers
    Andrew Nicholson: 2012–present Orlando Magic

    Nik Stauskas: 2014–present Sacramento Kings
    Tristan Thompson: 2011–present Cleveland Cavaliers
    Andrew Wiggins: 2014–present Cleveland Cavaliers

Canada is definitely trying to establish the same sort of program as USA Basketball given similar obstacles in getting the best players to commit to level of training that other national teams do. Getting all of the young NBA talent on the court at the same time is going to be an obstacle, but having a Steve Nash involved has to be a big help. They had their first exhibition today, which will be in the other thread since it was against a team competing in Spain this summer.

If anyone is interested, the South American Championships are being shown on FIBA's YouTube Channel. Argentina and Brazil do not have the teams that they will use in Spain, but there are several interesting names who are trying to play their way onto the full national team later. Of course a recap and the rosters will be here later tonight.
