The US women's field hockey team, including former Duke star Stephanie Fee, won their pool and has reached the semifinals of the Women's World Cup, where they will face Australia tomorrow. It may be going too far to say this was an upset, but they did beat some teams with higher world rankings in their pool.
I actually considered doing a thread for the field hockey, which could have had an unprecedented finish. Losing to Australia in the penalty shootout prevents that now.

Back to basketball, Tyus and Justise, along with Luke survive the first set of cuts from 24 to 15. The last 3 cuts will be made later.

Tomorrow, the FIBA Americas U18 Boys Championship starts in Colorado Springs (free to the public), so it is a good chance to get and early look at Tyus and Justise and a real early look at Luke.

Games can be seen right on the FIBA Americas website at the time of the game:
    http://fibaamericas.com/en/default.asp

The first game pits the USA against Uruguay at 7:30pm EDT (all schedules you see are in local MDT). If everything goes as planned, the team will play at that time for all four other days, with Mexico on Saturday and Argentina on Sunday already set in stone.

Here is the USA Basketball site that will be a good quick summary page:

Half time score--US 84, Uruguay 26. Only saw the last few minutes and I don't know the box score, but what I saw was pretty interesting. Clearly Uruguay is badly overrmatched. Even so, I'm pretty impressed with how well the US team is playing together and passing, etc., given they have only practiced together for a few days. Tyus threw an amazing behind-the-back no look pass to someone on the wing (can't say who, my live stream wasn't exactly high def), who quickly passed in to someone under the basket for an easy two.

The final was 156-58. Luke led not only the team but all players in the tournament in scoring on Day 1 with 30 points thanks to shooting 7 for 12 from behind the arc, adding 4 assists and 4 steals in 22 minutes. Tyus had 7 points, 6 assists and 4 steals in 14 minutes and Justise had 15 points in 13 minutes as the starters got plenty of rest. With 5 games in 5 days, that seems like a good idea.

The other game in our group was won by Argentina as they topped Mexico 87-72.

I was impressed by all 3 of our guys. This was a huge mismatch, but we have a crazy number of long athletic players (USA cliche, I guess). Turner is a walking mismatch, Winslow and Johnson are trapping all over the place, Jones is tough, Kennard can really stroke it and looks completely confident in his shot. Everyone was good because the comp was so weak, but Alonzo Trier turned my head. That kid is tough.

awhom111, what do we think, the DR and Canada are the best remaining games to watch? None of these teams seem up to the task.

When I watched the YouTube feed the other night, it was in Spanish. I assume that's the only option? It's actually not so bad, I took some Spanish and am actually able to catch things here and there...like the players last names, and pelota!

For everyone else, the YouTube links that awhom11 have provided below let you check out the archive versions of the full games, and it's fun to see these kids put on a clinic for a quarter or two.

Group A is about to go 2-0 in the first set of crossover games, so it would seem that their two best teams should be a little better than the Group B teams we have faced so far. This tournament is not all that tough, but it is an important part of building some team chemistry this summer as the U19 Worlds are always extremely tough on the Americans as we saw with some real battles last summer.

Spanish is the only option although allegedly some English commentary will arrive at some point.

The games are getting a little more serious now with the United States beating the Dominican Republic 90-56 in the semifinals. Tyus got more playing time and had 14 points and 7 assists in 27 minutes. Justise struggled a bit and ended up playing 19 minutes. Luke had 11 points in 12 minutes. In the loss, Weisner Perez and Illinois high schooler who is a 2015 recruit that will likely play DI, had 11 points and 6 rebounds.

I could only catch the second half of the semi-final against DR, but I think I was looking at some pretty tired young men on both teams. Donovan has been doing a good job of spreading the minutes around, but he has them playing a lot of full-court press/trap on defense and running on offense. Plus, they're playing at 6000ft.

Tyus Jones had a couple of long passes toward the end of the 3rd quarter for scores. One was a long alley-oop to Winslow. The other was a long pass from across mid-court to Turner under the basket. He's going to punish college teams that don't get back on defense. Justise Winslow is going to be a really tough matchup for a lot of teams. Luke Kennard could be scary good by the time he suits up 16 months from now. I didn't see much of Jeter in the second half.

Canada: I don't know much about their team (or Canadian HS basketball), but looking at their roster I didn't recognize names. Team USA has between 6 and 10 guys who will almost certainly play in the NBA, some quite soon. Does Team Canada have any likely NBA players?

This Canada team is not quite as strong as the one from two years ago. A bunch of their players are at US prep schools with most bound for NCAA schools (at least one of them is already committed to play in Canada's college system).

Here are some recruiting profile that I have found:

Brooks and Gill-Caesar have been the stars of the team so far with Gill-Caesar having the most DI interest. Chris Egi was recruited pretty heavily by a number of schools and will play for Tommy Amaker at Harvard.

It was a win for the USA after they took care of a game Canadian squad 113-79. Justise led the team with 20 points and 10 rebounds in 22 minutes. Tyus had 8 points and 5 assists in 25 minutes. Luke had 10 points in 14 minutes. The two young stars for Canada led the way for them as Dillon Brooks had 27 points and 8 rebounds and Montaque Gill-Caesar had 22 points. Tommy Amaker will look forward to having Chris Egi as he had 18 points and 13 rebounds.
    Boxscore:

For the tournament, Tyus was 1st in assists with 32 in 5 games and 5th in steals with 10. Justise was 4th in blocks with 6 and 5th in steals with 10. Luke finished 7th in scoring with 69 points in 82 minutes and did so by making the most three pointers with 15 while also leading the tournament in terms of percentage from beyond the arc. He also was tied for 9th in steals with 8.

For third place, the Dominican Republic beat Argentina 64-53. Puerto Rico beat Brazil 88-84 for 5th place. Mexico stormed back against Uruguay late to avoid last place 79-65.

Apparently English commentary for select games meant using the same announcers, but having them speak in English instead of Spanish, although they did pretty well and were probably better than most ESPN announcing crew.
