I'm not sure when they started taking polls after the bowls, but in my youth, they settled national championships before the bowls.
In the first year of the ACC, Maryland won the national title even though the Terps lost in their bowl game. That's a rough kind of justice -- the year before, Maryland was undefeated and won its bowl game, but still finished second to Tennessee, which then preceded to lose its bowl game.
I've seen people suggest that if Duke could have just defended that late pass in the 1939 Rose Bowl to finish undefeated, untied and unscored upon, that Duke could have won the national title. But they couldn't -- the polls were taken before the bowl and Duke finished No. 3.
But as far as I'm concerned this Duke team will forever be No. 24 (in the final BCS standings ) ... unless we win the bowl and end up ranked higher in the AP or coaches poll, in which case I'll use whichever ranking is highest.
