Thornton a nominee for SI's College Athlete of the Year Award

This recognition, which honors academic performance, community service, and athletic success, is memorialized in this article from SI. It discusses his involvement with some Durham-area schoolchildren, and how their performance has improved academically since Thornton entered their lives. It's worth noting that Thornton is a member of the NABC "Good Works" team.

Other nominees have more impressive stats--Trey Burke is the other college basketball player listed--but this is great recognition for a great student-athlete in Tyler Thornton. Kudos and keep it up.

Yet another instance of why I'm proud to be both a Duke and Michigan fan. Well done boys.

Awesome. There's more to life than basketball, and Tyler is taking a great opportunity to give back to the community (as do many other Duke players).

This is actually fairly remarkable for Tyler to be among ten from all of college sports, male and female. And to be one of the three basketball players when the other two won player of the year awards--bravo!

Pretty sure Taylor Thornton is a female, since Northwestern does not have men's lacrosse and does have women's. It would be pretty hard to mistake Tyler for a women's lax player. On the other hand, since they apparently choose one male and one female winner of this award, how awesome would it be if both got it?

On a serious not, congratulations to Tyler--very cool accomplishment.

Tyler Thornton would absolutely dominate women's lacrosse...

Okay, this is pretty huge. For a reserve without gaudy stats to make this list is damned impressive. Add in Ryan and Mason as dominant Academic All Americans and you've got a team that does a lot more than play basketball.

Yes--once he learned the stick skills. That part is harder than one might think, and the rules of women's lacrosse permit virtually no contact and don't allow defenders to move between a potential shooter and the goal once the shooter has the ball (I may not be getting that exactly right, but that is the gist of it), which might reduce the impact of some of Tyler's strengths. So there might be a learning curve. But once he got the hang of it, I think he would do okay.

This reminds me of the time Nate James was a finalist for the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in saving the planet from the Hale-Bopp comet. He simply told it to go away.

Well done, Tyler. Your timely play in clutch situations and unmatched determination have etched your place in Duke history. Anyone who doesn't appreciate Tyler Thornton, doesn't appreciate the game of basketball.

Just in case someone doesn't click on the above link, or missed it on the front page, there is a poll in that article. Tyler is currently at 8.16% (hint, hint).
