We thought that we would know who the final participants for Spain 2014 would be by the end of November, but FIBA has pushed that date back. This is likely due in part to the stronger than usual candidate pool of wildcard teams. Here is the press release:
    http://www.fiba.com/pages/eng/fc/new...sReleArti.html

With all senior national team play taking a rest today, there are a couple of youth tournaments going on. In Australia, New Zealand is battling the host team in a three game series on both the boy's and girl's sides to determine the spot up for grabs in the two 2014 U17 World Championships. Unsurprisingly, Australia won both Game 1s.

The FIBA Asia U16 Boy's Championship has been going on for a couple days in Iran as the continent looks to send three teams to Dubai next year. Two teams dropped out of the tournament, so nobody will be eliminated from Groups C and D of the tournament. Groups A and B will have to eliminate two teams at the close of group play tomorrow.

We are approaching the end of international calendar for the year.

Three more teams have punched tickets to Dubai next summer for the U17 Boy's World Championship. China got their bid and ended up winning the FIBA Asia U16 Boy's Championship over a Philippines program that continues to re-announce its presence on the international stage. The third place game in Asia went to Japan, so they too will be in the United Arab Emirates next summer.

The first round is over in the FIBA Asia Women's championship.

In Level I, India and Kazakhstan went to overtime with India prevailing 65-62. Both team knew they would be competing to try to stay in the upper level, so they were just playing for placement. Japan finished the first stage undefeated by beating China 62-55. Chen Nan had 16 points in the loss. South Korea dropped the final game 63-58 to Taiwan, but did not affect any of the semifinal matchups by doing so. Here are the boxscores:

We are slightly closer to finding out which 4 teams will be the final ones to join the other 20 next summer in Spain as our coach and Team USA look to continue to try to extend their international dominance. They will be chosen from 15 wildcard applicants: Nigeria, Brazil, Canada, Venezuela, China, Qatar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Finland, Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Poland, Russia, and Turkey. Not all 4 teams can be from Europe. Details are here:
    http://www.fiba.com/pages/eng/fe/14/...2/article.html

I will probably do a more detailed handicapping of each nation's chances at some point, but here are some rough groupings:
Pretty much no chance: Qatar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Finland, Israel
Unlikely to have a chance: Nigeria, Poland
    Outsiders: Canada, Venezuela, Germany
Contenders: Brazil, Greece, Italy, Russia, Turkey
    Near lock: China

There is only one more spot to fight for in the World Championship for Women. First in Thailand, there were two playoff games to decide the final two teams that will play in Level I of the next FIBA Asia Championship. India keeps it spot after it beat Malaysia 74-59. The hosts were up next and knocked Kazakhstan out of their spot with a 67-53 win. In the first semifinal, South Korea mounted a late comeback to beat China again 71-66 to clinch their spot in Turkey next summer. Chen Nan had 23 points and 7 rebounds in the loss. Japan won the other semifinal 74-56 over Taiwan as Yuko Oga had 15 points. Along with the championship game, China and Taiwan will square off for one spot in the World Championship. As promised, a little handicap of the 15 wild card applicants for next summer's World Championship. Numbers after the country name signify current world ranking:

    Nigeria (18)
Why: The team has some emerging talent. The country is big and would be a part of the continued growth of the sport in Africa.
Why Not: The team is still adjusting to international basketball and is formed almost exclusively of players who have spent their entire childhoods in the United States. Their federation has had a lot of trouble organizing the team in the past, creating question marks about what quality of team they would be able to field in any given year.
    Odds: 5%

    Brazil (10)
Why: The country is large and growing economically with a solid basketball tradition. The team has a number of big name players. It would be important to have the Olympic hosts at this tournament as well to prepare them.
Why Not: If the team is only as strong as the one they fielded this summer, it would be a disaster in the tournament. With no Olympic berth on the line for the team, how motivated would they be?
    Odds: 65%

    Canada (25)
Why: With the golden generation of youngsters coming through, the country could soon put itself on the international basketball map. The country is certainly prosperous with a fair sized population and plenty of potential for basketball interest.
Why Not: Are the younger players ready to shine on this stage? If chosen, would the team be at full strength?
    Odds: 10%

    Venezuela (28)
Why: A very loyal helper to FIBA. Hosts of a number of recent events.
Why Not: The team is not all that strong with heavy reliance on a couple of key players.
    Odds: 3%

    China (12)
Why: The population and economy along with interest in basketball make them the closest thing to a lock for a wild card.
Why Not: At the end of the day, their team is not that great and they were exposed pretty badly this past summer.
    Odds: 80%

    Qatar (42)
Why: Why not? There are no really good reasons outside of cash. That was once said about some other sports-related Qatar thing.
Why Not: The team is not very good. They have a history of not following the rules, leading to their 2011 debacle.
    Odds: 1%

    Bosnia and Herzegovina (57)
Why: They have some solid players and made a decent showing at Eurobasket.
Why Not: The country is not that big and there are no real critical star players that absolutely need to be a part of the tournament.
    Odds: 1%

    Finland (39)
Why: They have been a recent surprise team in Europe and have some decent young players.
Why Not: The country is not that big and there are no real critical star players that absolutely need to be a part of the tournament.
    Odds: 1%

    Germany (14)
Why: A large prosperous country considered an important battleground in the growth of basketball in Europe.
Why Not: Even at full strength, the team is not that great. Basketball is still in its infancy in this country compared to how far it hopes to reach.
    Odds: 15%

    Greece (5)
Why: A team with lots of basketball tradition. In theory, their current team should be very strong.
Why Not: Likely to be missing a lot of players who could improve the team. Not the most economically attractive candidate.
    Odds: 55%

    Israel (37)
Why: The country does have a strong tradition of club basketball.
Why Not: The country is not that big and there are no real critical star players that absolutely need to be a part of the tournament.
    Odds: 1%

    Italy (21)
Why: Country is starting to recapture its basketball tradition. Nearly qualified in the summer while missing some injured players. Plenty of economic potential
Why Not: May not be able to bring its strongest team. Not a lot of recent history.
    Odds: 40%

    Poland (40)
Why: Fairly decent sized country at least creates some economic reasons. Potential storyline if they play the United States
Why Not: The team is not very good even though they have a couple of solid players.
    Odds: 3%

    Russia (6)
Why: Strong performance in the last Olympics. Large country and economy. Historical support of basketball.
Why Not: Team was a complete disaster this summer. Unlikely to be able to field a team at its full potential next summer.
    Odds: 60%

    Turkey (7)
Why: Strong performance in the last World Championship. Good support of basketball in a big country with an emerging economy.
Why Not: Team might not be very good if summer was an indicator.
    Odds: 60%
