Georgetown and Tennessee turn back the clock

    http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaab/recap?gid=201211300229

G'town wins 37-36. That's right... combined score was the same as what Duke hung on Ohio State.

Did they misplace the shot clock in this game?

I had the misfortune of watching the last 10 minutes or so. It was 33-32 Hoya's when I tuned in. Tennessee missed four straight free throws. From there it was shoot, miss, rebound, go the other way. Wash, rinse, repeat. Ouch. Brick after brick. Tennessee had a great chance to win at the end. They chose a 26 ft contested 3 from Skyler Mcbee that air balled but ricocheted off a Hoya out of bounds with 3 seconds left. They inbounded out to the top of the right wing, and the guy never dribbled and immediately launched a 25 footer that was also contested.

Maybe the Big 10-11-12 could entice G'town as a basketball only school, assuming they could not lure Tennessee from the SEC.
[redacted] them and the horses they rode in on.

They were playing under the ancient playground rule, first team to 37, wins.

I could have built me a stout mansion with all the bricks in that game.

Or, G'town could play offense and Tennessee could play defense... and then in the fall they could switch it up.

Quick peek at the box for combined stats: 31 of 89 from the floor, 4 of 24 for 3's, 7 of 20 FTs, and 14 assists.

    Yikes.

Kyle Singler shoots better than that from the stands.

    Tenessee-Georgetown

Iy was worse than the final makes it look.

Markel Starks hit a jumper with 4:08 left to give Georgetown the 37-36 lead.

Over the next four-minutes plus, neither team scored. Tennessee had seven possessions in that stretch and missed four shots and had three turnovers.

Georgetown wasn't any better -- three misses and three turnovers in six possesions.

The two teams combined to miss 13 of 20 free throws and 49 of 80 field goals. Throw in 21 combined turnovers and you get one of the great offensive stinkers of modern time.

Got to give Tennessee points for symmetry -- 18 points in each half!

How is that even possible? Were they playing the game at a carnival? Were the rims hammered into ovals?

Well, my wife is a Vol, so I watched the whole game. I was impressed by both defenses, particularly Georgetown's, which just never let Jarnell Stokes do anything -- he was mostly smothered, and in the few times he did get the ball was collapsed on and wasn't mature enough to know what to do in that situation. Tennessee was mostly reduced to jacking up 3-pointers, which they don't do very well. Georgetown actually had the worse shooters, because they got better looks at the basket and still couldn't make the shots. And both teams' free throw defense was awesome, as related in the stats. All in all, a particularly ugly game ... and while Georgetown's defense might make them worthy of ranking, their offense surely doesn't.

I'm guessing that Ole' Roy is reviewing the tape looking for ways to improve the 'Holes four corners offense in case he needs to use it this year.

Sorry, but that is a very funny line.
For a game that had the effect of a cup of cocoa before bedtime.
