Thread: Where to eat?

  1. #1

need a restaurant in Chapel Hill or Durham

I am bringing my wife to Durham for the UMD game on Feb 11, and would like to find a good restaurant for dinner that evening. I am not looking for a fancy restaurant, but a good casual local place with good food adn reasonable prices. I am fine with staying in Durham or heading over to Chapel Hill - either is fine. I was also wondering if there is any good evening entertainment (maybe a local theatre company or a comedy club or a jazz club) to keep us occupied?

    Thanks!

    On the casual side:

    Tyler's Taproom (great beer selection)

    Cuban Revolution

And, of course, Allen and Son, Bullocks, Hog Heaven and the Q Shack.

You can do it true Blue Devil style and eat at Satisfactions Pizza. Which is great, filled with TVS, and Duke fans.

Or check out my boy Dame at Dame's Chicken and Waffles.

Another choice in Durham is Pop's http://pops-durham.com/ This is slightly more upscale that Satty's, about 2 blocks closer to downtown on the same side of the street. We had a large group eat there at Homecoming last Sept. and it was very good.

Whenever we're in Durham we always hit Bullock's. Bring cash. They don't take credit cards. I guess they are so good they don't have to - but it's a pain because it never remember.

I love Dame's, and if you're going after the game you'll be fine. But if you are going before the game leave plenty of time. The place can get very crowded and the service is, well . . . leisurely at best.

I believe the only proper evening activity after a Duke MD game is attending the riot...

Will never again attend any event on the MD campus after that debacle. Of course, should say my first bad experience in College Park was at a football game in 1978.

Don't know why I kept going back there. ;-)

Guess I am a naive optimist. I kept thinking reasonable Terp fans would be embarrassed enough to demand change.

    Silly me.

I'm a regular there. On the standing menu the Carnitas are alwasy terrific. Regarding the daily specials -if you want a vegetarian option the risotto is always great. The chef also does a great job with most seafood. If there is duck on the spcials menu make sure you order it, no matter how he prepares it it will be wonderful.

Housemade Pastrami with Cave-Aged Gruyere & Dijon Mustard on Rye
Have you had their pastrami? I'd leave off their cheese and mustard but it might be worth a try!

    General Question

Is Crook's Corner still a blue ribbon choice for shrimp and grits and other Southern specialties. Founder Bill Neal, who passed away a number of years ago, was a pioneer in researching Southern cooking, going back to the early 19th century. He was the guy who re-imagined shrimp and grits as a savory dish with lots of bacon and other goodies. Now it's served everywhere, although not usually as good as his version.

As a young lad on Meeting St. in Charlestion (this was 60 years ago), the shrimp vendors would come by with their pushcarts early in the morning selling their dawn catch of small brown shrimp. Awfully good with grits, but we would just cook them with butter.

    Yummm. I'm getting hungry.

You might also need Pasta Machines to make pasta making easier and more efficient.

Things I miss the most about Durham:

    1) Foster's brunch on Sundays
    2) Satti's Big Beer nights
    3) Desserts at Magnolia...though I only ate there once, I still miss being in its proximity
    4) ANGUS BARN (That's for you, Ozzie)

The new chef at Crooks Corner is outstanding. It is oneof the few good reasons to go to Chapel Hill.

It is really good, though sliced unusually thick. I'm used to thinly sliced (deli style) corned beef and pastrami, and theirs is quite thick.

    Smile Where to eat?

Would love to hear suggestions/recommendations for lunch and dinner destinations while in Durham.
We will be touring/visiting this weekend the area and have already read the visitor guides but would like to hear where are the "MUST GO's" if in town for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner for the weekend.
Where does the basketball crowd gather after the game? Bar-b-Q?

    Thanks
