    R.E.M. Calls it quits

They've actually had a bit of an artistic comeback in recent years.

Still, 31 years. They beat the odds.

You can still hear them on Radio Free Europe.

    They definitely defied the odds.
If you memorized these lyrics you were a fan, lol. I have to admit I never could get the song right.

That's great, it starts with an earthquake
    Birds and snakes, an aeroplane
And Lenny Bruce is not afraid
Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn
World serves its own needs, don't miserve your own needs
speed it up a notch, speak, grunt, no strength
The ladder start to clatter with fear of height, down height
Wire in a fire representing seven games
And a government for hire at a combat site
Left her wasn't coming in a hurry with the furies
    Breathing down your neck
Team by team reporters, baffled, trumped, tethered, cropped
Look at that low plane, fine then
    Uh-oh, overflow population, common group
But it'll do to save yourself, serve yourself
World serves its own needs, listen to your heart beat
tell me with a rapture and the reverend and the right, right
You vitriolic, patriotic, slam, fight, bright light
    Feeling pretty psyched

Gotta say, I saw them open for the Police in '83 and at Page Auditorium in '86 or so. Dated a girl in college who absolutely loved R.E.M. while I was at Duke. I live in Ga and hear stories about them in Athens all the time. Got to know Chris Mills' mom, for whom I Am Superman was roughly written. Know folks who are "part of the family" and toured with them.

Having said all of that -- since the drummer Bill Berry left for medical reasons a decade or so ago, has it really been R.E.M.? No knock, but this seems more like a post-mortem statement than anything.

Actually, if you understood half the lyrics on Murmer you were a real fan! One of my favorite bands ever, although less so recently. I saw them in Cameron in the late 80's (opened by 10,000 Maniacs) and a few times after that. They were a great "indie" band in their prime.
