Great to see Shav still playing. That kid has some fire in the belly to stick with it for all these years. I hope he's making some decent coin. A nice percentage of our rotation players since the late 1990s have found a way to collect a professional ballplaying paycheck well past their Duke playing days.

It is good to see Shav recover from a couple of setbacks. There have been quite a few Duke players find a place to earn a living while playing basketball.

    Here is today's update:

Marty Pocius and Real Madrid had a trip to Italy on tap in Euroleague action today as they faced Emporio Armani Milan and won 72-65. Marty played only a single minute as Rudy Fernandez scored 13 points as he prepares to leave. In the loss, Danilo Gallinari had 13 points and 6 rebounds and ex-Maryland player Drew Nicholas had 11 points. In Belgrade, Jon Scheyer was left off out of the 12 man squad for Maccabi Tel-Aviv's game with Partizan. They ended up losing 74-71 as their own player, the second round draft pick Milan Macvan, on loan at Partizan, scored 21 points and grabbed 8 rebounds to lead the charge against the team that still pays a portion of his salary. Nikola Pekovic added 17 points in the win while Jordan Farmar had 11 points in his farewell game and Devin Smith added 12 points.

In other Euroleague action, Turkish giants Fenerbahce defeated Greek side Olympiakos 86-70. Ex-Baylor player Curtis Jerrells led all scorers with 17 points in the win while in the loss, ex-UNC Greensboro player Kyle Hines had 14 points and 7 rebounds and ex-Michigan State player Kalin Lucas had 13 points. In Russia, UNICS Kazan defeated Turkish team Galatasaray 72-61 with the American trio of ex-BYU player Terrell Lyday, ex-Eastern Illinois player Henry Domercant, and ex-Temple player Lynn Greer providing 17, 13, and 12 points respectively. Italian team Montepaschi Siena went to Slovenia and edged out Union Olimpija 63-57. Ex-New Orleans star Bo McCalebb had 16 points in the win and ex-Indiana State player David Moss added 13 points. In the loss, former North Dakota State player Ben Woodside had 11 points and the UNC duo of Danny Green and Deon Thompson each had 10 points and 6 rebounds. Barcelona left Spain to face Polish team Asseco Prokom and pounded their hosts 76-45 with brief Michigan State player Erazem Lorbek scoring 15 points and grabbing 8 rebounds. In Italy, Bennet Cantu held off a furious comeback from Caja Laboral of Spain to win 71-68 as Goran Dragic barely had enough time to unpack before hearing the news about the NBA.

There were two more Euroleague Women games on Thursday, starting in Russia, where Nadezhda defeated Italian team Beretta-Famila 70-63 after getting 14 points from Katie Douglas. In the other game, Italian side Taranto defeated French outfit Lattes Montpellier 71-65. Our Thursday will start in the less exciting venue of Lithuania where David McClure and Kedainiai were in Baltic League action away to Pieno Zvaigzdes. It was a rough game for the team as they slumped to a 73-53 defeat that had been 34 point margin after 3 quarters. David had 2 points and 6 rebounds in 24 minutes. Here is the boxscore:

The main attraction of the day was obviously the Euroleague showdown between Real Madrid and Maccabi Tel Aviv as the two teams battled for group supremacy in Spain. It was Real Madrid that came out on top as hot shooting propelled them to a 88-64 win. Two Duke players took the floor as Marty Pocius recovered from a minor injury in time to score 12 points in 15 minutes off the bench. Jon Scheyer made his Euroleague debut with a solid 9 minutes off the bench. The two players were guarding one another on several possessions as Marty knocked down a 3 over Jon and then failed to catch an attempted alley-oop over him. As was expected, Kyle Singler is not quite ready to suit up for his new team and will probably make his debut in the league on Sunday. In the win, Rudy Fernandez pretended he had already left the team (since the fans already said goodbye to him on Sunday which was supposed to be his last game) by going scoreless in 23 minutes and my emerging new favorite player, Jaycee Carroll from Utah State, had 17 second half points. In the loss, Keith Langford had 18 points and Richard Hendrix had 10 points.

There were several other games in the Euroleague on Thursday as German team Brose went to Spain and earned a solid away win against Unicaja. In the win, former Georgia Southern player Julius Jenkins had 23 points, former San Diego State player Marcus Slaughter had 14 points and 8 rebounds, ex-Texas player P.J. Tucker had 11 points and 13 rebounds, and ex-Stanford player Casey Jacobsen added 11 points. In the loss, ex-St. Mary's player Earl Rowland had 17 points and ex-Kentucky player Gerald Fitch had 15 points. Italian outfit Montepaschi Siena earned a tough away win in Istanbul as they defeated Galatasaray 67-63 despite a number of missing players. Ex-Virginia Tech player Jamon Gordon had 10 points and 6 rebounds in the losing effort. In Belgium, Spirou Charleroi got a nifty 84-79 victory against the visiting Serbian team Partizan. Former McNeese State player Demond Mallet had 22 points in the win and ex-Michigan State player Chris Hill added 15 points as 22 points from Acie Law was not enough. In Spain, Barcelona won a low-scoring 63-50 game over UNICS Kazan of Russia. Brief Michigan State player Erazem Lorbek had 11 points in the win and ex-Cincinnati player Pete Mickeal added 10 points while ex-BYU player Terrell Lyday had 12 points and ex-Temple player Lynn Greer had 10 points in the loss. In Greece, Olympiakos edged out Spain's Caja Laboral 84-82 with former UNC Greensboro player Kyle Hines scoring 11 points and grabbing 6 rebounds.

The rest of the Euroleague Women games for the week also came on Thursday and we start in Turkey, where giants Galatasaray defeated Czech side USK Prague 75-67. Diana Taurasi had 26 points, Tina Charles had 25 points and 10 rebounds, and Epiphany Prince had 12 points and 7 rebounds in the win as DeLisha Milton-Jones had 13 points and 9 rebounds in the loss. In Poland, Hungarian team Gyor defeated hosts Lotos Gdynia 87-71 after getting 18 points and 17 boards from Quanitra Hollingsworth. In the loss ex-Florida player Aneika Henry had 17 points and ex-Wisconsin player Jolene Anderson had 15 points. In Spain, Slovakian side Good Angels Kosice got a nice 68-62 away win over Rivas Ecopolis. Danielle McCray had 11 points and 6 rebounds in the win and Asjha Jones had 14 points and 11 rebounds in the loss. In Italy, Beretta-Famila beat Spain's Ros Casares 67-64 behind Janel McCarville's 13 points and 15 rebounds and 7 points and 14 rebounds from Cheryl Ford as DeWanna Bonner's 19 points and 12 rebounds were not enough for the visitors.

Thanks Jderf. There is a continuing increase in the number of Duke players plying their trade away from these shores and there are a lot of places to go to find out how everyone is doing. Just for Daniel Ewing I check the Ukraine Superleague site, the Eurocup site, the VTB United League website, and sometimes a third-party boxscore site.

In the loss, Danilo Gallinari had 13 points and 6 rebounds and ex-Maryland player Drew Nicholas had 11 points.

Kia Vaughn had 14 points and 9 rebounds in the win and ex-Kansas State player Megan Mahoney added 11 points and 6 rebounds.
Why isn't Jon even dressing? He's my all time favorite Duke player and I thought he had a good shot at making an NBA roster. I'm really surprised to see that he apparently isn't succeeding at Tel Aviv. Any insight?

Jon has largely been stuck behind players who are either proven in the NBA or in Europe. When he has gotten chances to play, he has not always stood out and forced the coach to give him more playing time. He is still rocking the goggles and I would have to think that injury had to have at least a little long-term impact on his game. The team has apparently tried to loan him to another team in Israel but he wants to fight for more playing time with the team. They are actively trying to find another point guard now that Jordan Farmar is back here, which would hurt Jon's playing time again.

On Monday, Maccabi Tel Aviv was in action against Maccabi Rishon and they pulled out a late comeback to win 76-75. Jon came off the bench and grabbed a rebound in 8 minutes of action. Keith Langford led the team with 17 points, Shawn James had 12 points, and Devin Smith had 11 points. In the loss, former Florida State player Derwin Kitchen and ex-Kentucky player Joe Crawford had 17 points each, ex-Georgetown player Brandon Bowman had 16 points, and ex-Hofstra player Adrian Uter had 14 points and 9 rebounds.

Also on Monday, David McClure and Kedainiai were back in Baltic League action although they did not have to leave the country to face Baltai. The team fell 76-63 after a poor second half with David providing 3 points and 11 rebounds in 32 minutes. Here is the boxscore:

On Tuesday, EuroCup action continued and Daniel Ewing and Azovmash traveled to France to face off with LeMans. The team had no shot of making it to the next round, but they put up a good fight before falling 75-67. Daniel had 12 points in 28 minutes, Ricky Minard had 17 points, and Radoslav Rancik had 10 points and 7 rebounds. In the win, ex-Tulane and Washington State player Taylor Rochestie had 18 points, ex-Pepperdine player Alex Acker and ex-Gonzaga player J.P. Batista had 15 points each. Here is the boxscore:

Here are a couple of articles from the Real Madrid website about Kyle's signing. As usual he is photogenic. I have no idea why people think that taking pictures during a medical is a good idea.

Moving on to former Women's team players, Karima Christmas and Bnot Hasharon were in action Monday against Habikaa. Karima helped her team with 11 points and 14 rebounds in 32 minutes but the team fell 73-57. Italee Lucas had 13 points while her former backcourt mate at UNC, Cetera DeGraffenreid had 17 points on the winning side. Former Illinois player Jenna Smith added 18 points and 7 rebounds and ex-Oklahoma player Nyeshia Stevenson had 17 points and 7 rebounds. Here is the boxscore:

Nice to see Kyle rocking the shaggy hair again. A look not really seen since his high school days.

Our update will start early this morning in China, where Shavlik Randolph and the Dongguan Leopards faced the Jilin Tigers. In Italy, Emporio Armani Milan destroyed their visitors from Belgium, Spirou Charleroi, 88-53. Ex-Oregon player Malik Hairston had 15 points in the win and ex-Maryland player Drew Nicholas added 12 points and 6 assists while ex-Kentucky player Andre Riddick had 12 points in the loss. In Spain, Caja Laboral recorded a blowout victory over France's Nancy 90-55 as former Alaska-Fairbanks player Brad Oleson had 14 points in the win and ex-Kansas player Kenny Gregory had 15 points in the loss.

A balanced effort which saw Candace Parker score 17 points and grab 7 rebounds, Cappie Pondexter score 15 points, Yelena Leuchanka score 13 points, and Sandrine Gruda score 10 points was enough to overcome 28 points from Diana Taurasi and 18 points and 10 rebounds from Tina Charles. In Spain, Ros Casares defeated their visitors from Poland, Lotos Gdynia, 84-70. Eshaya Murphy had 17 points and 7 rebounds, Sancho Lyttle had 15 points, and Jana Vesela had 10 points in the win while ex-Florida player Aneika Henry and ex-Wisconsin player Jolene Anderson had 14 points each in defeat. Also, as Duke fans, we may have to contend with the fact that Jon's skillset, though very refined, is definitely tailored for a very specific type of offense. Of course, with Coach K being Coach K, that was exactly the kind of offense we ran when Jon was our leader: a methodical, precise half-court oriented offense. And Jon flourished. In the real world, however, it is much less likely that Jon ends up with a coach who is flexible enough to design a custom-fit offense just for him. As much as I love him (he's easily one of my top 5 Dukies), it doesn't surprise me that he has struggled since graduating.

... and the whole eye thing doesn't help either.

Marty Pocius was held out of the game again due to injury, but Kyle Singler got the start and scored 12 points in 27 minutes. Jaycee Carroll also had 12 points while former JC and NAIA player Sinan Guler had 13 points and Sasha Vujacic had 10 points in the loss.

The final game in that group was for the last qualifying spot in the next round and Italian team Emporio Armani Milan got the tough win in Belgrade over Partizan 72-66 to sneak away with the final place. Ex-Oregon player Malik Hairston had 18 points and ex-St. John's player Omar Cook added 17 points and 6 assists in the win. The other group still had 3 games with meaning as 5 teams started the day within a game of one another. An all-Spain affair in Bilbao between Gescrap and Caja Laboral in the huge Basque rivalry led to a 77-72 victory for the hosts and a spot in the next round for them. Former Alaska-Fairbanks player Brad Oleson had 10 points in the loss. Turkish team Fenerbahce captured Istanbul's third berth in the final 16 with a nice away win over Italy's Bennet Cantu 83-76 although the hosts also go through for the next round. Ex-Oregon player Maarten Leunen had 13 points in the loss. In France, Greece's Olympiakos defeated the only team with no chance at the start of the day, Nancy, 79-74. In the loss, ex-VCU player Jamal Shuler had 18 points and 9 rebounds and ex-Georgetown player Victor Samnick had 10 points.

After all of the results of the games today, the last two group standings for qualification to the next round look like this:

A: Fenerbahce Ulker (Istanbul), Olympiakos Piraeus, Bennet Cantu, Gescrap Bilbao
D: Real Madrid, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Anadolu Efes (Istanbul), Emporio Armani Milan

After the draw on Wednesday, Real Madrid and Maccabi Tel Aviv will each be in a new group of four teams for the next six games. Each group will have one team from each of the earlier groups and by finishing first, Real Madrid will get one of the second place team, one of the third place teams, and one fourth place team while Maccabi Tel Aviv will face a group winner, a third place team, and a fourth place team thanks to their second place finish.

    Love these updates, awhom111.

Jon's struggle for PT in the Euroleague is interesting. It's obviously the first time in his adult life that he has every faced prolonged bench time. It will be interesting to see what he does at the end of the year - does he try to find another, perhaps less prestigious team, where he can earn some more PT? Based on the game reports awhom111 provides, it's obvious that there are a lot of former noteworthy US college players getting more minutes and producing. Jon does seem to have the fire in the belly to make a professional career for himself. Sans PT and production, it will be tough to get a look from the NBA, but I am sure he'd settle for meaningful minutes and a large paycheck in Europe. As I review the game write-ups, I must profess some respect for Omar Cook. He was the poster child for leaving college too quickly, but obviously has passion for the game...he was in the 2001 draft, tried to make the NBA for years with various tryouts, DLeague stints, and other minor US pro league stints. He found a home in Europe, has become a star over there these past 6 years, and even became a citizen of Montenegro to play for their national team which, I assume, helps keep him highly visible and relevant in European bball circles. There are a lot of ways to keep playing ball if you've got the drive.

AWHOM111, I really enjoy your posts on Duke players abroad. You obviously put a lot of effort into this, and I'm sure many of us fans on DBR appreciate what you do. One point I find extremely interesting is the diversity of locations where basketball is being played -- all over the globe! Can you comment on the environments where these games are played? Big arenas, or small gyms. Large crowds, or a few unruly mobs. Are the games well-officiated? Somehow, I get the impression it's a lot like the old baseball minor leagues --that is, the basketball equivalent of low pay, long bus rides, poorly maintained stadiums, marginal equipment, etc. Any insight would be helpful. Thanks!

Jon may actually have a decision to make soon. Apparently his team had already been shopping him around to loan him to another team in Israel for the rest of the season, but he turned that away to fight for more playing time. I believe he is contracted at a slightly higher salary for next season already, so we will see how the team tries to handle things on their end. The fact that they just agreed to bring in another guard in the form of Demond Mallet is kind of an indication that not only is Jon not quite at the level that they need to have the season they want, but the guys he is struggling to beat out are also not quite at the team's very high standard. If Jon is settled in Israel, he may want to take up any loan offers and see what he can do on a team where he can get more playing time.

Lots of countries offer a couple of citizenship slots to American and other foreign players so that they can bulk up their own national team. It is good to see a player like Omar Cook make a very good basketball career for himself after perhaps making the wrong choice in the past. I especially admire the players who battle on for a basketball career for even lower pay at some of the smaller clubs as they continue to pursue their dreams.

Basketball is played widely across the planet and pretty much every league wants to attract American players. Not every league and team environment is quite the same. Quite a few former Duke players play for big teams in big leagues and they play in great facilities in front of large college/NBA size crowds. On the other hand, you have a player like David McClure playing in a smaller league where his team's home attendance is in the low hundreds. His team still gets a couple games with the big teams like Zalgiris Kaunas that draw thousands to their newly-built arena. In terms of crown atmosphere, it is not as unruly as it might have been in the past although it would be difficult to get used to for American audiences used to NBA settings. At the biggest clubs it would be very comparable to Germany soccer crowds, which are very passionate with their flag and banner displays, but still relatively peaceful compared to some overseas sports environments.

Here is today's update with the next one planned for Monday:

Shavlik Randolph and the Dongguan Leopards got into a tough clash at home against the Fujian Sturgeons and the game went into overtime before they lost 122-118. Shavlik had 29 points and 14 rebounds in 46 minutes before fouling out while Josh Akognon added 24 points. In the win, former Florida player Anthony Roberson had 41 points and 8 rebounds and former South Florida player Will McDonald had 25 points and 9 rebounds as two players on the team played all 53 minutes.

Daniel Ewing and Azovmash were back in VTB United League action against Russian team Enisey. Daniel had 16 points in 26 minutes in a 95-74 win. Ricky Minard had 15 points and 6 rebounds and Radoslav Rancik added 14 points as ex-Maryland player Lonny Baxter had 8 points in the loss. Here is the boxscore:

DeMarcus Nelson and Cholet were back in French League action, but continued a tough start to the domestic season with an 88-71 loss to Dijon. DeMarcus had 10 points in 23 minutes, his newest American teammate ex-Cal player Patrick Christopher had 15 points, and French ex-Hawaii player Luc-Arthur Vebobe had 10 points and 10 rebounds. In the win, ex-JC and NAIA player Zach Moss had 24 points, ex-Fairleigh Dickinson player Andre Harris had 13 points, ex-Boston College player Sean Marshall had 12 points and 8 rebounds, and ex-Troy State player Bobby Dixon had 10 points.
