It seems as if Shelden is making the best out of his current situation. What's wrong with that? He's been a journeyman in the NBA and he's decided that he'd rather be in Europe at this stage in his life. It's not like he's going to go broke while playing in Europe.

To be honest, Shelden's move is a little bit confusing. Obviously France is closer to Russia than the United States, but I would have to think that Shelden would have been a candidate for a team that could offer him a better deal. The chatter on the internet seems to be that he is being paid quite a bit compared to other players in the league, but France pays less than some of the other European leagues. I could certainly understand if he took a deal with the men's team that plays in the same city as his wife's team, for example. As near as I can tell, there are still a couple of decent level European teams that might be in the market for a post player, and I wonder if he could have gotten a better gig. Sometimes these European deals are a little bit complicated for us to analyze from this side of the Atlantic.

Here is an article about Shelden and his arrival in France:

I do not know if he made his debut for the team in their preseason opening 77-64 loss to Dijon. I can only find the Dijon statistics for the game.

Here is the latest article from the team website interviewing Jon Scheyer:

Here is an article about Sheana Mosch's arrival at her club as they continue their preseason:

There are now details on Carrem Gay's last preseason game as she scored 12 points in the 70-61 win. Her teammate, ex-South Carolina player Demetress Adams had 18 points while ex-Maryland player Diandra Tchatchouang had 10 points in the loss. They had another preseason game on Tuesday and Carrem had 9 points in a 57-34 win with Adams scoring 19 points.

Where did I say he was doing something wrong?

Maybe he isn't choosing to be in Europe. Perhaps there's no demand for his services in the NBA, although I would be surprised if he couldn't make an NBA roster.

But a professional athlete can't be compared to a teacher, or lawyer or engineer. Shel isn't going to be playing professional basketball when he's 50. He has a limited amount of time to maximize his earning potential for his family.

Do fathers bring other things to their families besides a pay-check? Of course. But it's not like he's retiring to be a stay-at-home-dad. He's playing pro ball in a lesser league.

That's why it seems curious to me to voluntarily limit your potential earnings when you may only be a few years from leaving that lucrative work force. Not wron

Shelden Williams will miss out on most of his team's preseason training with an injury that should keep him out for at least two weeks. They hope to have him back by the game between last year's A and B division champions, but he should be back to full health by the start of the season. As a result, he missed the another preseason game for the team as they started play in a four-team tournament today. Here is the article on the team website:
    http://www.elanchalon.fr/accueil/news/570

David McClure made his first appearance in his return to Neptunas as they played fellow Lithuanian team Lietuvos Rytas as a part of a five-team tournament and lost 94-78. David had 2 points. In the win, Renaldas Seibutis, drafted by the Mavericks five years ago, had 12 points and former Tennessee-Chattanooga player Mindaugas Katelynas had 11 points. Here is a writeup of the game:
    http://www.kkneptunas.lt/lt/naujiena/313/

Marty Pocius and Real Madrid are continuing their preseason preparations as they fellow Spanish side Blusens Monbus in Guadalajara (Spain, not Mexico) and won 86-60. Marty had 6 points off the bench as Nikola Mirotic had 16 points, Sergio Rodriguez had 13 points, and Felipe Reyes had 12 points. In the loss, ex-Pitt player Levon Kendall had 15 points. I want to extend some kudos to awhom111 for his persistence in finding info about our European Blue Devils.

Plus, he made an effort to find me at the Stanford game. Really nice fellow. Keep up the good work.

Edit: The system won't allow me to give him a spork. I must have done so sometime back, though darned if I know for what. But he must have deserved it. He certainly deserves another.

Thanks for the kind works again, Jim.

Here are a few more preseason games from the weekend:

David McClure and Neptunas continued their tournament on Saturday against Ukraine's Budivelnyk and won 100-95. David had 5 points as ex-Virginia player Laurynas Mikalauskas had 16 points and ex-BYU player Rashaun Broadus had 16 points, 11 rebounds, and 7 assists. In the loss, ex-Missouri player Leo Lyons had 25 points and ex-Virginia Tech player Malcolm Delaney had 22 points. Here is the write-up of the game:
    http://www.kkneptunas.lt/lt/naujiena/314/

On Sunday, they faced Lokomotiv Kuban and were blown out 93-60. I do not know if David played or not, but he did not score. In the win, Nick Calathes, the former Florida player whose rights are held by the Mavericks, had 11 points. Here is the write-up:
    http://www.kkneptunas.lt/lt/naujiena/315/

Marty Pocius and Real Madrid won their four-team tournament after beating local rivals Asefa Estudiantes 78-75. Marty did not score in his time off the bench as Nikola Mirotic continued his preseason form with 21 points and Sergio Rodriguez had 10 points. In the loss, ex-Hawaii player Carl English and ex-Iona player Tariq Kirksay had 15 points each and Kyle Kuric, the rookie out of Louisville, had 10 points. Here is the story:

I saw those two items earlier today. The Adriatic League can be easier to track than the Chinese league, but I will do what I can. Hey guybrush, what do you think of Italy's efforts so far this summer? Are you optimistic about a decent showing in Slovenia next summer?

After the qualifiers finish tomorrow, I will do a full Eurobasket 2013 post with any possible Duke connections.

Here are a couple more preseason games:

Carrem Gay and Toulouse faced second division team Pau Orthez for a second time on Saturday and won 64-39. Carrem had 15 points and 6 rebounds in 30 minutes. Here is the boxscore:
    http://www.basketlfb.com/toulouse/upload/tmbpau.jpg

Sheana Mosch led her team in scoring with 18 points, but they lost to fellow top-division team Peripignan 71-58. Here is a brief article on the game:

Italy played very well like a club team, Gallinari was terrific, others guys like Datome, Aradori, Hackett are ready to be top players in Europe and, to say the truth, without Bargnani and especially Belinelli we play much much better, sharing the ball and not just giving it to the nba guys. If those two will be back the next summer they will have to play as a teammate not like stars

That is good to hear. Do you think that the team has a chance at qualifying for 2014? Also, which of the American players count as naturalized (besides Hackett of course) and which ones got their passports young enough? I think David Chiotti, who is from the same area as I am, has gotten a little bit of gametime recently.

Here is the official news on DeMarcus Nelson signing for his new team, Crvena zvezda of Serbia. In the English-speaking world, the club is generally known as Red Star Belgrade, so that is the name that I will be using. The club will be playing in the Adriatic League and Eurocup as well as their domestic league. Here are news articles announcing the signing in both Serbian and English:

While the Olympics were the headline event, the international basketball calendar is far from finished for the year. The European teams not involved in the Olympics have been attempting to qualify for next year's EuroBasket and those games finished up today. Slovenia will host the tournament, so they are already in. The seven teams that were a part of the Olympic process all automatically qualified as well so they only had to focus on one tournament this summer. Spain will play at Eurobasket despite qualifying for the World Championships as hosts, unlike the United States, which appear to be opting out of their spot at the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship. France, Russia, Lithuania, Macedonia, and Greece join them and Great Britain as long as there are no lingering issues from the three federations that unified to create the team.

The top two teams from each of the six qualifying groups got automatic spots. Montenegro and Israel made it out of Group A, Germany and Sweden advanced from Group B, Croatia and Ukraine won out in Group C, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Georgia led Group D, Poland and Finland emerged from Group E, and Italy and Turkey topped Group F. The final four spots were given to the best four third place teams in the qualifiers excluding Serbia's results against Slovakia in Group A because that group had one more team than the others. The Czech Republic in F, Belgium in E, Latvia in D, and Serbia in A got those spots, leaving Bulgaria in B and Austria in A just a little bit short.

This tournament will be worth keeping an eye on next summer as at least seven of the twenty-four teams will be involved in the 2014 World Championships alongside the United States, with the possibility of more teams joining them in the mysterious wildcard process. With the field expanded to this size, pretty much all of the big teams will be involved. Some of the teams may be at less than full strength, especially if they think that they can earn a top-six spot without a key player or two. You can certainly expect Spain to use the opportunity to bring in few new players with their energy focused on winning as the host country in 2014. Interestingly, the field contains all of the countries from the former Yugoslavia (except for Kosovo, for slightly complicated reasons), which should make the games exciting as they are played in Slovenia.

There are obviously a few potential Duke ties to this tournament. Marty Pocius should be suiting up for Lithuania as he is likely to be considered a key player as some of their veterans end their international and club careers. Luol Deng will obviously be the key to any success for Great Britain with Eric Boateng also in contention for the team. It is unclear whether Todd Zafirovski will have any involvement for Macedonia next summer or whether he is considering a pro career at all, but he was involved this past summer and could probably at least make the team's training camp if he wished to do so. Jon Scheyer would theoretically be in contention for Israel, especially if he can put together a solid club campaign, but I believe he would take up the only naturalized player slot for the team if he was selected. They have been using ex-Florida player Alex Tyus, a convert to Judaism, in that spot because they are weaker in the frontcourt. Jordan Farmar would also probably be ahead of Jon if they need a naturalized guard. A strong season could put Alex Murphy in contention for Finland, but the timing of the tournament in terms of next school year and the fact that he is still available to play for Finland's U-20 next summer might mean that he focuses primarily on the European U20 Championship.

Hackett is not naturilized, his father Rudy was an american player who played many years in Italy, his mom is italian. Daniel was born in italy and he's considered italian, he also played in the Scavolini Pesaro Youth teams before joining his dad (who devorced and came back to USA) just in time for an high school year and committing to USC.
David Chiotti is the naturalized player and he's got italian roots by his father and got the passport when he still was at college in the States

Other naturalized players are Anthony Maestranzi (Siena) a point guard and Jeff Viggiano (treviso) as you may notice Italian team use naturalized players with real Italian origins, we don't have fake passports such as Bo McCalebb (Fyrom Macedonia, ridiculous) or Jacob Pullen (Georgia) and many others especially in eastern europe teams
