    Shav doing well

Golly, Shavlik Randolph seems to be doing very well these days. I'm happy for him. Based on the opponent rosters mentioned, the level of talent in Puerto Rico must be at least equivalent to the average NCAA Division I league (perhaps not the top teams). I wonder why he never performed that way against NCAA talent while at Duke? A snowballing combination of illness, injuries, confidence and decreased playing time?

Carrem had 16 points and 7 rebounds in her final game of the season.

The Euroleague Semifinals on Friday were both great games as defending champions Panathinaikos of Greece faced one of the strongest teams throughout this year's competition in Russia's CSKA Moscow. The returning champions got off to a great start with a 29-15 lead after 10 minutes only to go cold for the next quarter and carry only a 2 point lead into the 2nd half. After a nearly even 3rd quarter, the Russian challengers started their final comeback in the 4th quarter and held their opponents off for the 66-64 win. Andrei Kirilenko had 17 points and 9 rebounds in the win as ex-Maryland player Sarunas Jasikevicius had 19 points and ex-Arizona State player Mike Batiste had 11 points in the loss. Later in the day, another team who had been strong throughout the season, Spain's FC Barcelona, looked to advance as they faced underdog Olympiakos of Greece. Olympiakos started the game well as they were looking to do better than their hated rivals in an effort to steal both European and domestic glory from them in a short stretch of time after already having a better season in soccer. FC Barcelona was looking to win at least one big European trophy for the entire sports club, but they were unable to chip into the lead until late, leaving them too little time to come back as they lost 68-64. Several one-season NBA players played roles in the game as Vassilis Spanoulis had 21 points and 6 assists in the win while Juan Carlos Navarro had 18 points and Boniface Ndong had 10 points in the loss.

The third place game took place early Sunday and FC Barcelona beat Panathinaikos 74-69. Ex-Princeton player C.J. Wallace had 12 points in the win while ex-Nebraska player Aleks Maric had 13 points and 11 rebounds and ex-DII player David Logan had 11 points in the loss. The final saw both CSKA Moscow and Olympiakos get off to a slow start before the Russian team built a big halftime lead. Their Greek opposition waited for the 4th quarter which they entered down 13 to spring into action and started a huge run to give themselves a chance to win it late. On the final possession, Vassilis Spanoulis got the ball and drove the ball to the basket before finding Georgios Printezis on the baseline for a floater with less than a second left to complete a 62-61 win. Spanoulis finished with 15 points while Andrei Kirilenko had 12 points and 10 rebounds and Nenad Krstic had 11 points in the loss.

Since only four former players on three teams are still playing right now, I figured that I would do a mini-update with a full one coming this weekend.

DeMarcus Nelson and Cholet had an incredible deciding game today and prevailed in overtime to knock out the top seed and move on to the quarterfinals. DeMarcus had a great all-around performance to drive his team on.

Marty Pocius and Kyle Singler face an elimination game after losing the first of two games in Basque Country in another overtime thriller and will need to win to take the series back to Madrid. Kyle overcame a slow start to help his team back into the game late.

Normally, I would not link up goduke.com articles since it seems like an obvious place to look for Duke news, but they had two articles that cover some former players overseas:

DeMarcus, Marty, and Kyle are all in action on Wednesday, so expect some more news then.
