Shelden Williams had been battling an injury during the preseason and wanted to make it back in time for the team's opener on Thursday, but he ended up missing the game. Shelden is playing for Elan Chalon, the reigning champions in France, this season. His teammates include former Loyola (Chicago) player Blake Schilb, ex-Missouri and Spurs' second round pick Marcus Denmon, and ex-North Carolina State player Ilian Evtimov. The teams opener was the French Match of Champions between the defending top-division champions and the winner of the second division from last year, Limoges. Elan Chalon had an early lead, but fell behind late and had a comeback fall just short in a 78-76 defeat. Schilb had 23 points and 7 assists in the loss while ex-Pitt player Brad Wanamaker had 23 points and ex-Wake Forest player Ty Walker had 11 points in the win.

On Saturday, Marty Pocius and Real Madrid participated in the semifinal of the Super Cup to open the season. The team got the lucky draw and faced the host team Zaragoza and held on for a 72-64 win to advance to Sunday's final. This is Marty's second season with Real Madrid. His American teammates include ex-San Diego State player Marcus Slaughter, ex-College of Charleston player Dontaye Draper, who plays internationally for Croatia after being naturalized, and ex-Utah State Jaycee Carroll, who made his debut for Azerbaijan after being naturalized there. Rudy Fernandez returned to Real Madrid from the NBA, joining former NBA player Sergio Rodriguez. A couple more members of the team were drafted by NBA teams, Nikola Mirotic, whose rights are held by the Bulls after being picked in the first round in 2011, and Sergio Llull, who was picked in the second round in 2009 and has his rights held by the Rockets. In this game, Marty grabbed a pair of rebounds in a quiet 11 minutes. Mirotic led the team with 14 points and 11 rebounds, Llull had 13 points, and Carroll had 10 points. In the loss, ex-UCLA player Michael Roll and ex-Texas A&M player Joseph Jones had 10 points each. Here is the game's boxscore:

The French women's league started their game this weekend with all games taking place in Paris. On Saturday, the team that Mistie Bass will join after her WNBA season is finished, Lyon, beat Arras 75-63 in her absence. Lyon bought the remainder of Mistie's old team Challes, which had financial issues, so several of her former teammates, including ex-Nebraska player Danielle Page, are on the new team. In this game, Page had 10 points, while in the loss, ex-James Madison player Dawn Evans had 10 points and 7 rebounds. Here is the boxscore:

On Sunday, Sheana Mosch's team was in action, but she was unable to play due to unresolved issues with the club. Sheana will be playing for Charleville, also known as Flammes Carolo, and her teammates include ex-Georgetown player Aminata Diop. Without Sheana, Charleville beat Villeneuve 59-48. One former Duke player who did get to play in France this weekend was Carrem Gay, who starts her second season with Toulouse. The team was able to bring her back for their return to the top division in France after she played such a large role in helping the team win promotion last season. Her teammates include ex-South Carolina player Demetress Adams. Their first game was against tough opposition, and they fell 65-45 to Lattes Montpellier. Carrem had 10 points and 8 rebounds in 35 minutes. Ex-WNBA player Edwige Lawson-Wade had 10 points and 7 rebounds in the win. Here is the boxscore:

With the preseason finishing up for most teams and the regular season and European games starting, I will be moving to the more regular posting schedule of one weekend update, usually coming on Sunday or Monday, and one midweek update, usually Thursdays but possibly some on Fridays. Like last year, I will cover European games from the three men's competitions and two women's competitions as well as all of the games involving Duke players.

Here are a couple more loose items before the main updates:

DeMarcus Nelson and Red Star Belgrade had one more preseason game on Sunday against fellow Serbian team Tamis and won 89-73. DeMarcus had 3 points as his teammate, ex-Virginia player Elton Brown had 16 points. Here is a brief summary of the game:

Extremely bad news came out of Australia this morning as Kathleen Scheer's knee will require rest and rehab that will rule her out for a number of weeks or possible months. She and her team have agreed to terminate her contract, so she will be returning to the United States. If she is able to rest and heal during the fall, it might be possible for her to begin her professional career in another league later in the season when teams are looking for reinforcements. Here are two articles on the situation:

On the other hand, Shelden Williams has been medically cleared to rejoin the team for practice and he should be fine for their regular season opener.

His teammates include ex-BYU player Rashaun Broadus, ex-Virginia player Laurynas Mikalauskas, and ex-JC player Evaldas Dainys. In this game, David had 3 points in 11 minutes off the bench. DeMarcus had 9 points in 14 minutes after getting the start. Here is the boxscore:

Qualifiers for one final spot in the Euroleague and four spots in the third-tier Eurochallenge started this week. Eight teams were in Italy playing for that Euroleague slot with the seven losing teams dropping down to the second-tier Eurocup. Two quarterfinals were contested on Tuesday as Czech champions Nymburk faced Belgian champions Oostende. The game was close for three quarters before Nymburk built a lead and then used a strong fourth quarter to win the game 83-65 to advance to the next round. In the win, ex-Texas player A.J. Abrams had 15 points and ex-Iowa State player Mike Taylor had 13 points while ex-Hawaii player Matthew Lojeski had 16 points and 6 rebounds and ex-Florida player Brent Wright had 14 points and 9 rebounds in the loss. The other game, featuring hosts Cantu, the third place team in Italy last year, and Bulgarian champions Lukoil Academic was close for a while before the Italians built enough of a second half lead to win 87-79. Ex-Florida player Alex Tyus had 18 points and ex-Louisville player Jerry Smith had 13 points and 7 rebounds in the win while ex-San Diego State player Brandon Heath had 21 points and ex-Syracuse player Darryl Watkins had 18 points and 15 rebounds in the loss.

The other two quarterfinals took place on Wednesday. First, the fifth-place team in Russia, Unics Kazan, faced the runners-up in Germany, Ratiopharm Ulm. The Russian team took the lead early before letting their opponents close the gap, only to blow things wide open in the third quarter for the eventual 91-73 win. In the win, ex-BYU player Terrell Lyday had 21 points, ex-Saint Louis player Ian Vougioukas had 18 points, and former Texas-Pan American player Mire Chatman had 15 points. In the loss, ex-Santa Clara player John Bryant had 17 points and 7 rebounds and ex-Villanova player Allan Ray had 17 points. The second game matched French runners-up LeMans Sarthe and Ukrainian champions Donetsk. The game was close and low-scoring as LeMans edged away late to win 61-55. In the win, ex-George Mason player Cameron Long had 14 points, ex-UConn player Khalid El-Amin had 12 points, and brief NBA player Pape Sy had 10 points. In the loss, ex-Santa Clara player Doron Perkins had 15 points and 10 rebounds and former CSU-Bakersfield player Ramel Curry had 10 points.

The semifinals were both on Thursday. Hosts Cantu started off the action against Nymburk, and despite taking a couple of large leads, kept letting the Czech team back in the game before holding on to an 89-83 win. Jerry Smith had 16 points and ex-Penn State player Jeff Brooks had 13 points in the win. In the loss, ex-Iowa State player Mike Taylor and A.J. Abrams had 16 points each and ex-Michigan State player Drew Naymick had 12 points. The other game saw Unics Kazan battle LeMans Sarthe and went down to the wire before the French team put together a late surge to win 86-78. In the win, ex-Gonzaga player J.P. Batista had 20 points and 10 rebounds, ex-Murray State player Cuthbert Victor had 15 points, and Cameron Long and Khalid El-Amin had 12 points each. In the loss, Terrell Lyday had 18 points, Mire Chatman had 13 points, and Ian Vougioukas had 12 points.

The final on Friday saw Cantu start off well in front of their home fans before LeMans gave the team a little scare with a third quarter run before falling too far behind to catch up as the Italians ended up winning 80-66. In the win, Maarty Leunen, the ex-Oregon player who still has his NBA rights held by the Rockets, who drafted him in the second round in 2008, had 15 points. In the loss, J.P. Batista had 15 points and 6 rebounds and Cuthbert Victor had 11 points. Now that the field is set for the Euroleague regular season, the nationality breakdown of the 24 teams is available. There will be four teams from Spain, three each from Turkey and Italy, two from Russia, Greece, Lithuania, and Germany, and one from France, Israel, Poland, Serbia, Croatia, and Slovenia. Assuming there are no late switches, the teams for the second-tier Eurocup are also set now that seven teams have been eliminated from Euroleague. There will be four teams from Russia, three from Spain, France, Germany, and Ukraine, two from Turkey, Poland, and Belgium, and one from Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Greece, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Montenegro, and Serbia.

The Eurochallenge qualifiers are all two-game series with one game hosted by each team with all four first games this week. In Finland, league runners-up Joensuun Kataja built a solid lead for the second leg after using a strong fourth quarter to beat Turkey's Aliaga Petkim, who were seventh in their league, 82-70. In the win, ex-new Orleans player Johnell Smith had 16 points, ex-East Tennessee state player Jerald Fields had 13 points, and ex-DII player Jonte Flowers had 10 points while ex-Louisville player Taquan Dean had 10 points in the loss. In Estonia, hosts Rakvere Tarvas, who finished third in their league last year, fell 106-76 to Turkey's Tofas Bursa, who finished eighth in their league. In the win, ex-Gonzaga player Josh Heytvelt had 28 points and 7 rebounds, ex-Iona player Steven Burtt had 20 points, and ex-Texas A&M player Chinemelu Elonu, whose rights still belong to the Lakers after they picked him near the end in 2009, had 14 points. In the loss, ex-Siena player Clarence Jackson had 17 points and ex-Valparaiso player Raitis Grafs had 12 points and 6 rebounds. In Klosterneuberg, Austria champions, the Xion Dukes, fell to Apollon Limassol , third place finishers in Cyprus. 78-70. In the win, ex-DII player Brandon Brown had 24 points and 17 rebounds, ex-McNeese State player Diego Kapelan had 13 points, ex-DII player Darryl Dorsey had 12 points and 10 assists, and former Tennessee-Martin player Gerald Robinson had 11 points and 9 rebounds while ex-Utah State player Curtis Bobb had 10 points in the loss. The final game was nearly a basketball rarity as Ural Ekaterinburg, who play in the second-tier in Russia, takes a narrow 69-67 lead home after nearly having the game end in a tie in Romania at Gaz Metan Medias, who finished third in their league last year. In the win, ex-George Washington player Chris Monroe had 23 points and 7 assists and ex-Oklahoma player Aaron McGhee had 19 points and 8 rebounds while ex-Missouri State player Deven Mitchell had 24 points and 9 rebounds in the loss.

If you want to watch replays of Adriatic League games involving DeMarcus Nelson, or even the games not involving his team, you can do so at the league website:

The full-length games marked as full match video. It looks like they upload highlights soon after the game and then the full game shortly after that. Games in Eastern Europe can be interesting to watch because the atmosphere is slightly different than one would experience in the United States.

One more former Blue Devil will be involved in basketball in Europe this season as Quin Snyder is an assistant for Ettore Messina at CSKA Moscow. Their team will play in Euroleague and the VTB United League, which features teams from countries that were formerly in the Soviet Union and elsewhere in Eastern Europe as well as the domestic Russian league. His team's results will not be followed here on a regular basis.

Several other former Duke players who subsequently transferred elsewhere are also playing basketball around the globe. Jamal Boykin is playing in the Netherlands for Groningen, which is usually known by its sponsor name, GasTerra Flames. Eric Boateng is playing for Phantoms Braunschweig in Germany. Oley Czyz is playing in Italy for former power Virtus Roma. Taylor King and Chris Burgess are still looking for teams. Chris had signed in South Korea earlier in the summer, but the team cut him before the season started.

The second leg of the Eurochallenge qualifiers all took place on Tuesday. Gaz Metan Medias was slightly behind after a narrow loss at home in Romania as they traveled to Russia to face Ural Ekaterinburg. In the win, ex-DII player Austin Nichols had 14 points, ex-Iona player Steven Burtt had 13 points, and ex-Gonzaga player Josh Heytvelt had 11 points and 13 rebounds while ex-Providence player Maris Laksa had 13 points in the loss. Nikola Mirotic led the team with 17 points and 12 rebounds, but he got 37 minutes to collect those stats before fouling out. ESPN3 will have live Euroleague coverage again with NBA TV having tape-delayed coverage. I was hoping for two games a week, but it looks like they only have one this round. It will be on Thursday at 2:45pm Eastern as Fenerbahce welcomes Khimki Moscow to Istanbul. If nothing else, it should be a pretty fun atmosphere to watch.

Ex-Grambling player Brion Rush, who just joined the team to fill in for the injured Marcus Denmon, and Ilian Evtimov had 17 points and Blake Schilb had 13 points. The ESPN3 Euroleague game this week is Partizan Belgrade hosting CSKA Moscow, so you can have the chance to see Quin Snyder on the bench. As a reminder, if you watch the ESPN3 feed, they do sometimes show highlights or live look ins to other games during breaks in the game or during halftime. This game should have a pretty good atmosphere, so it might be a pretty good representation of European basketball.

Jasmine Thomas's game on Sunday should be live here at 9:00am Eastern:

Some of David McClure's VTB United League games may also be available through streaming. It is hard to tell before the games, so I will try to give people a heads up to check. Fortunately, the league website is in English and fairly easy to navifate, so if you are interested, it would probably not be that hard to find.

    Huge Thanks for Updates

I would like to thank awhom111 for providing these frequent updates. I used to scour the internet trying to find updates on Duke Alum playing abroad. After discovering this wonderful site last year, this has become my favorite thread. You have made my life so much easier! Being a basketball and Duke junkie, I enjoy seeing how well our boys are playing. It is great to see them making a living doing what they love to do. Again, thanks for updates!
