VTech's PF Allan Chaney to undergo heart procedure

    http://www.sportingnews.com/college-...eart-procedure

As reported by Sporting News, Virginia Tech forward Allan Chaney this week underwent a procedure to examine his heart, which the team physician believes is "likely related to a viral inflammation of the heart." No young person should have these sorts of medical problems, and I pray for his prompt and complete recovery.

    Amen on prayers for Chaney.

@HeadHokie Seth Greenberg tweeted "Good to have Allan Chaney back on campus. Meeting with the specialist on the 16th."

""Inflammation of the heart -- Myocarditis," said Chaney of his condition. "It came out of nowhere. They said maybe I got it when I got sick. Hopefully, if it goes away, I'll be ready by the season."

If not ready by middle of January, Chaney says he'll take a medical redshirt.

Chaney will be examined every month. He's on medication and also takes iron pills, fish oil and vitamin C"

Sounds like a viral infection. Most folks take several weeks/months to recover from it. I suspect the procedures he had were ECGs, echocardiograms and an electrophysiology study if he actually passed out from his condition. He may wear a heart monitor intermittently and probably have another echo in 30-90 days if he had any heart enlargement/dysfunction associated with his illness/condition.

Chaney has already taken one redshirt, as a transfer. Under rare circumstances, the NCAA will allow an athlete a second redshirt, giving him/her six years to complete four years of eligibility. Should Chaney require a medical redshirt, I hope he would become one of these exceptions.

Anything is possible, but this is very unlikely -- based on past NCAA rulings -- that Chaney could get a sixth year in this situation. Almost always, exceptions are only granted for players who miss two seasons with injury. Miami's Adrian Thomas, who is returning for his sixth year this season, fits that category.

Players who volunatarily redshirt a year (and the transfer wait is a voluntary move in the NCAA's eyes) are rarely if even granted a medical hardship when they miss a second year due to injury.

I very much hope that Chaney recovers enough to play this season, but I'd be surprised if the NCAA looks favorably on another redshirt year for him.
