Combining new threads with old ones

What's the point of combining a new thread with an old dormant one? In cases like the Marshall Plumlee thread, it only ensures that people have to sift through several pages from 2008 to see what's new. Is the goal to have every thread as big, untimely and unreadable as the Austin Rivers thread?

It's a constant tension. Flood the board with duplicate topics and push threads off the first page vs. unwieldy threads.

As a policy, we generally merge recruiting stuff.

The "New" button should make it easy to keep your place in those threads, though, so long as you're logged in and visit at least occasionally.
