Maryland’s head lacrosse coach has just resigned; although the Terps were rated #3 at the regular season's conclusion, they were unexpected defeated by Notre Dame in the NCAA Tournament.

According to The Sun, it was not so much a resignation as Yow's decision to not renew.

"On Saturday, Cottle completed the final year of his contract. According to an official at the Maryland, Cottle had been told by athletic director Deborah Yow that the Terps had to make the Final Four this season or it likely would be the coach's last at Maryland."

This is a dilemma for Maryland. They are practiced at recruiting the academically unqualified (Williams' teams' historical graduation rates apply), but how will a Yow-sanctioned coach compete in a sport where virtually all candidates have solid scholastic backgrounds?

I think the most interesting aspect of this situation is that former Duke and current USA coach, Pressler, is one of the three principal candidates to replace Cottle.

I know this is hard for some to stomach but the Terps have a rich heritage in lacrosse. The coach prior to Cottle, Edell, was a super coach. In a sport dominated by private schools, he was able to compete using a large number of youngsters from Maryland. The Maryland alums who care about the sport want to get back to where they were in the 80's and 90's.

Being an old gezzer, I admire the student athletes at Duke, Stanford, Notre Dame, Northwestern, Wake and Ivy League schools. I recognize that times change and numerous scholarship athletes at state schools are there only as a means for moving on to play sports (particularly the major sports). In the case of Maryland, the school and coaching staff did a very poor job of supporting and encouraging their scholarship basketball players in the early 2000's to get their degrees (even though all are earning a living playing pro basketball). A significant amount of pressure was brought to bear on the AD and coach Williams 5-6 years ago to clean up their act. The result is that all four scholarship basketball players graduated on time this year making it 8 of the last 9. The reality is that the Terps have gotten back in line with most of the ACC schools regarding graduation of their basketball players.

So how does the 8% graduation rate on record for the Terps come about, GW67?

I am certainly no expert on NCAA rules, regs and calcs but the 8% graduation record applies to youngsters from 1999-2002. The 8% probably is a putrid 1 for 12 during this period (I know that Tahj Holden got his degree so he is probably the only one).

The range moves each year. The next 2-3 graduation classes were poor as well. As I mentioned, considerable heat was put on the AD and Williams by alums and politicos to correct this situation. It appears that they have corrected it but it be a few years before the NCAA approach shows this to be the case.
