    Board Game Geeks?

I just wondered if anyone else in into the hobby and registered at boardgamegeek.com?

Boardgames have become a strange obsession for me over the past year and a half. My wife and I have about 80 (inclusive of a bunch of expansions to other games), and try to have at least a few of them hit the table each week.

    We play:

    Settlers...
    Puerto Rico
    Carcasonne
    Tigris & Euphrates
    Tikal
    Princes of Florence
    Ticket to Ride
    RoboRally
    Torres
    Bohnanza
    Alhambra
    Cosmic Encounter

and a whole bunch more, but probably not 80. We're always looking for new games to add to the group (there are 4 couples in our group total).

I speak German, and often buy the original versions/versions that haven't made it to the US yet when I'm over there, which is a running joke, as I then translate the directions/rules, and of course get accused of cheating.

I really recommend "Time's Up" as a great party game to bridge with non-gamers. I have yet to meet someone who doesn't love that game.

That's a good list! Have you tried Catan on Xbox360 yet? Definitely a quick and fun diversion.

I think Tigris & Euphrates is my favorite game, and I'm a little bummed I missed a chance at getting the card game version cheap during yesterday's Tangathon.

I'd really like to try Princes of Florence and Alhambra.

Puerto Rico is my wife's favorite, but it's neigh impossible to play with 2 (the variants aren't much good). She settles for San Juan, the card game version, when it's just us.

I imagine it's a bit tough to get good games that support 8 players. I don't think I have any, and my collection now stands at 76:

I'm pretty clearly a big Renier Knizia fan.

As Randy Jackson would say, Knizia is the bomb!

Believe it or not, but Settlers is one of my least favorite games, although very high up the list with some of our friends.

Tigris & Euphrates is my favorite as well, but I rarely get to play it, as others find it too complicated. Carcasonne with all the expansions is probably second, and Puerto Rico ranks up there as well.

Looking at your list, we also own or have played:

Betrayal at House on the Hill
Axxis & Allies (loooong time ago)
    Mystery of the Abbey
    Niagara

We also spend a lot of time playing party games, ie. Taboo, Cranium, Trivial Pursuit, National Geographic Global Pursuit, Time's Up, etc.

Looking at the list, there's several games in the top ten we haven't tried yet, so I may have to pick one up soon!

I believe it on Settlers - not one of my favorites but for the Cities & Knights expansion, which makes it a great game. If sales on X360 of Catan go well, Big Huge Games will develop the expansions.

Carcassonne if schedule for release on X360 in June, and Alhambra later this summer.

I play cranium at my in-laws place, and we have a blast with it. Also have Global Pursuit and a few editions of Trivial Pursuit in my parent's basement.

I HIGHLY recommend Pillars of the Earth as a new release, and if you like then eventually graduating to Caylus, which is fairly complex. Here's a link to the page:

If you've never heard of any of these, the best gateway game out there right now is probably Ticket to Ride, designed by Alan Moon and published in the U.S. by Days of Wonder.

I haven't yet met someone who doesn't like it, and most non-gamers who try it absolutely LOVE it (hence it's rock star status as a gateway game).

At the risk of spamming, anyone interested in branching out into boardgames should take a look at Thoughthammer.com (after looking at boardgamegeek.com to learn about the games), to find the best prices.

Ticket to Ride is on sale for $24.12 (plus shipping) for Mother's Day, which on a game that still sells like hotcakes at MSRP (~$40), is a great deal.

I'm in agreement with CavLaw on Ticket to Ride. We gave it to my in-laws for my MIL's birthday one year, and they love it (non-gamers). Another fun, similar game, is "Metro" (I think that's the name), where you try to build the longest metro tracks between various stations in Paris, while simultaneously trying to shorten your opponents'.

    Apples to Apples

Love this game. It is simple and amusing and mostly luck, but after some libations, it's pretty addicting and can be laugh out loud funny. I groaned at the premise when it was explained to me and it took a couple of rounds to get into it, but ended up having a blast. Need at least 5 players to make it interesting.

    Diplomacy

I still think the best "board" game ever is Diplomacy. You have to have long-term strategy and broad goals, tactical manuevering skills, and inter-relational skills and persuasion.

Oh and did I mention that there are NO elements of chance invovled (dice, cards, etc.) Everything is up to what you and the six other players simultaneously decide.

Only problem is it takes forever to play.

In other game news, I learned how to play Settlers this past weekend (went straight into expansion) - quite fun once I caught on...

    Diplomacy is a great game!

I don't have that one, but the boardgame based on George RR Martin's "A Game of Thrones" plays very closely with a good theme.

I have looked at the sites for awhile now, but haven't purchased any of the games. THis last year, my taiji instructor got me playing Tantrix, Fluxx and Zendo - a bunch of really fun games.

My wife loves the party games, I like strategy games. We often have difficulty agreeing on what to play. I did get her into Tantrix, and I begrudgingly play Cranium.

Luckily, I am teaching a class on game design for T&D next spring, so I need to go and by various games between then and now. between bardgame geek and looney labs, I am going to have some fun.
