Duke in the NBA, revised edition, early preview

Ah, yes. All is right with the world on this wonderful April day. Duke has some freshly cut nets and a brand new trophy. Undefeated at home, ACC regular season and tourney champs, and NCAA tournament champion. Duke has once again proved that they are without a doubt the class of the NCAA. I could wax poetic about their success all day.

I DONNT CARE ABOUT YOUR STUPID CHAMPIONSHIPS YOU ONLY HAVE THEM BECAUSE K RIDES THE REFS AND GETS ALL THE CALLS EVERY SINGLE ONE OF UR PLAYERS WILL BE TERRIBLE IN THE NBA IF THEY EVEN GET THERE WHICH THEY WONT

Really? Terrible in the NBA, you say? Prepare to have your face wrecked using my two of my favorite things: tables and math.

NONE OF YOUR PLAYERS PLAY IN THE NBA

Hmm…. Say, just how many Duke players played in the NBA this season, compared to other respectable programs?

    Code:
    Duke Count	14
    UCLA Count	14
    UNC Count	13
    UCONN Count	12
    Arizona Count	10
    Kansas Count	9
    Kentucky Count	9
    Texas Count	7
    GaTech Count	6
    Memphis Count	6
    OhioSt Count	6
    Wake Count	6
WHATEVERRR THEY ALL SIT ON THE BENCH AND SUCK THEIR THUMBS WHILE REAL PLAYERS ARE ON THE FLOOR

OK, so Shav Randolph really shouldn’t count as an NBA player. Let’s get rid of all the scrubs. Computer, remove anyone that was benched for more than 15 games this year. Exhibit 2:

    Code:
    UCLA 11
    Duke 10
    Arizona 7
    Kansas 7
    UConn 6
    UNC 6
    GaTech 4
    Memphis 4
    Syracuse	4
    Texas 4
    Kentucky	3
    Wake 3
    Ohio St 1
Oh wow! Second only to UCLA. I can handle that.

WHATEVER YOU STILL DONT HAVE NE TOP END TALENT

You know what's interesting about that list? It looks like we have six schools eligible to enter the world’s first 5 on 5 alumni tournament! Computer: of the players left, let’s take the top 5 alums from each school (ranked by John Hollinger’s PER rating) and set some rosters. Here’s what it looks like:

What in the name of Christian Laettner? The K Army starting 5 go for 79.6 PPG, more than any other team? Our combined PER is better than any other team? We dominate in nearly every single statistical category? Say, those numbers are quite impressive, not just compared to other alumni teams. How would they fare against, say, the mighty Cleveland Cavaliers?

That’s right kids. Duke wins, 80-70. Congratulations Duke Blue Devils, 2009-10 NBA Regular Season Champions.

Yep, but did you see that play he made driving on LeBron? Behind the dribble and slash to the basket from the 3-pt line which he then finished with a reverse layup. My eyes fell out of my head!

That was one of the most awkward-looking drives I've seen, capped off by a very impressive reverse layup finish. I'm still not sure how he shook James on that move. It looked like he was more likely to dribble it off his leg and out of bounds.

CrazieDUMB, you should work in the Duke Media office! Or be feeding info to the Mothership and Stats, Inc.

Or start a regular column called "Contrary to Popular Opinion"

    keep it up!

I am all kinds of speechless. Post of the year. You are amazing.

To be fair, Deng's body-type and his lanky movements have always looked awkward to me, ever since his year at Duke. But I dont think it was as bad as you made it out to be. How many people juke James, no matter how it looks?

Heres the video, people can judge for themselves:

TV had a better feed, shown from behind Deng. Here's the basket-steal-basket from Luol earlier:

Well, here we go again with SVG and JJ. He's just not gonna play much in this first series against the Bobcats unless every other guard and small forward on the team picks up a bunch of fouls. I think he's either the 9th or 10th guy off the bench today. And I'm sure he'll only get a few minutes per half. In the second half of game 2 he only played about two minutes. Hopefully JJ can get out of Orlando as soon as possible. He's yet to get a fair shake there, and I don't see that ever changing.

Well, he's in now and has hit two nice long range 2s in the past couple minutes on top of getting booed every time he touches the ball by the Charlotte fans.

Yep. The booing is really insane at this point. I feel bad for any Duke fan that has to live in Charlotte. I bet they'd boo Gerald Henderson if he ever got in the game. Of course with Larry & MJ in control there's no chance of that ever happening. Duke players have really gotten some raw deals in terms of being drafted into bad situations.

It's JJ. If he wasn't being booed, he'd probably have a panic attack.

I'm sure. It certainly doesn't bother him at all. The way the Magic have been shooting the 3 (other than Nelson) I'm surprised Stan didn't leave JJ in longer. None of the other guys are hitting anything from the outside.

I there a reason why you include Redick (averaging 9.6 ppg) instead of GHill (averaging 11.3 ppg) and also the most accomplished Duke nba player ever?

    Other than that, great post!

My friend that knows very little about NBA wants to know why the crowd just cheered for JJ for the first time all day... he was called for a foul.

Larry and Michael sure have the Bobcats humming on all cylinders.

Its no surprise that you would point that out. You fail to see the big picture. Look at where the team was before their arrival. Look at where they are now by comparison to that. Getting them to the playoffs is a major improvement. The future lies bright ahead. You know the kind of success Larry Brown is capable of. You do know about his NBA titles in Detroit don't you? Ex-players from Duke and UNC make up the roster and the coaching staff. If anything the marketing seems to be going well. But maybe you didn't recognize those facts, being the negative nay-sayer type.

Wow, you are squared away on the numbers. Good job! Duke and UNC both have players making great contributions in the NBA. Whether they start or come off the bench playing in the NBA is an accomplishment to be proud of. I think combined the two programs have sent 128 players to the NBA (UNC 78, Duke 50). It all adds to the mystic of the rivalry, the best by far in the NCAA. They could play each other in tic tac toe and it would be a heated match. FYI, Henderson's (Duke) contributions to the Bobcats were a big help in getting the Larry Brown (Tar Heel) coached Cats into the NBA playoffs this year. Raymond Felton (Tar Heel) and Henderson actually compliment each other really well. See, we can play together like resposible adults....right?

I stand corrected. Good catch. I checked it out and you are right. He won there in 2004 only. But I am thinking its nothing but good for Charlotte that he is there. It may end up much like when Bill Parcells went to coach the Cowboys. They won no titles but he helped right a ship that was headed nowhere. I am hoping for a championship though. Wow, that would be amazing.
