    Syracuse Losing Schollies

    Syracuse to pay the piper:

    http://blog.syracuse.com/orangebaske...use_unive.html

The Orange’s basketball team scored 912, below the necessary 925, for the first time in program history due to the early departure of several student-athletes, according to a release from SU.

... “We have always been above the APR standard since it was implemented. We had three students leave school early to pursue professional basketball careers last spring and that is difficult to overcome,” said head coach Jim Boeheim. “In anticipation of this, we took the scholarship penalty during the 2009-10 school year. We anticipate being back above the APR standard when the next report is compiled.”

Jonny Flynn, Eric Devendorf and Paul Harris all left school early last spring to turn pro.
I love how they "took" the penalty when it suited them, when it wouldn't cause a scholarship crunch.

How far behind can Cal and UK be?

Devendorf "turned pro" early? I hadn't remembered that, but what an idiot. After going undrafted, here is his storied career:

On December 26, 2009, Devendorf signed with the Reno Bighorns of the NBDL.[19] In his debut, Devendorf played 14:33 and scored two points on 1-of-3 shooting as the Bighorns defeated the Tulsa 66ers 102-87.[20] On January 6, 2010, Devendorf was waived by the Bighorns.[21]

On February 8, 2010, Devendorf signed with the Waikato Pistons of the New Zealand National Basketball League. He scored 49 points in his season debut.[22]

Devendorf was released in April by the Pistons following an incident in which he was invlolved in a small bar conflict involving former Syracuse star Josh Pace. He was signed to NBL team Wellington Saints shortly after, and starts as point guard averaging 26.1 ppg.

He redshirted for a year. But even if he didn't get a degree, then it should still be okay with the APR so long as he left in good academic standing. So not only did he NOT graduate in four years, but he also flunked out?

"Three players went pro early" is not the whole story, Coach Boeheim. It sounds more like "three players quit going to class and then went pro early" or something along those lines...
