A Chronicle comic strip in the mid-late 90s

    Hey all,

Can anyone help me remember the name of a cartoonist/comic strip from the Chronicle from about 1996-1998 or so? It was a guy (I want to say the last name was Hedberg or something similar) who did very Far Side stuff; very very funny, but caused a HUGE controversy with a cartoon about a dog catcher and a Korean restaurant (and then the next year again?)

    Anyway, anyone remember his name?

Well, the best stuff in that time period was Mitch in Wonderland, which was frickin' hysterical. That was written by Matt Gidney. I don't recall a Korean resturant theme, though...it wasn't The Drinky Drinky Kids, was it?

I remember the cartoon, and so a search of the chronicle archives (by the way, they have an online database going way back, I was surpised how much stuff is there) found this:

I remember a huge uproar about it, so I'm surprised the only letter to the editor was written in jest.

I also recall the late 90's version being an update to one from the early 90's:

I loved Mitch in Wonderland. I bought one of the books. I still have it on my shelf. I think it was called "Back in Mauve", cause the Duke poster that year was "Back in Black". My favorite was always the one where his hippie roommate pulls the sweater out of his belly button.

I definitely remember the Korean restaurant one with the flip you for it with the dog catcher, but I couldn't remember who wrote it. I do remember meeting the guy once though.

Gidney did a later comic strip outside of Duke, also called Mitch in Wonderland, roughly paralleling his life in NYC after school. http://mitchinwonderland.com/

The cartoonist who did "flip you for it" (not Gidney) did a re-take one year later, where he took the exact same cartoon, but added a Jew who said something to the effect of, "I just want the coin."

Yeah, it was Jim Funk, although I forget the name of the cartoon... I recall it being very Far Side-esque. Honestly I found his cartoons absolutely hysterical. And yeah, I remember the added Has-id... in fact, it was even labeled "New offensive element added." If I recall people went berserk, again, over it.

I believe it was called "Roadkill." I had one that I saved with a suspension bridge clearly put together all wrong and the caption Picasso's early failures as a civil engineer led him to pursue other lines of work where he felt his creativity would be more appreciated.
    "There can BE only one."
