    Smile Women's Golf Inching Up

Duke Women are in the final round of the NCAA championship at Cave's Valley near Baltimore. They started at eighth and are now tied for 4th on holes 6-8. Duke is the only team under par for the day.

Still 17 strokes behind the leader, so another championsip is a real long shot. But Go Duke!!!

Amanda Blumenhurst is tied for 4th in individual play at +5, six shots behind Jennifer Song of USC.

The sleeper in the singles field is Nannette Hill of Wake Forest, competing as an individual. She played this AM and has finished the tournament at +6, which is certain to rise in the standings from her current tie for 8th, as almost everyone is playing the tough Cave's Valley course at above par.

Though it would take a miraculous finish for the team to bring home its 6th NC, by starting their round on Number 10 Duke has put the two toughest holes, 16 and 18, behind them, dropping 8 strokes to par as a team. ASU, SoCal and UCLA still have to finish on the tougher nine and a tired team could drop a lot of strokes in a hurry on 18. Could be interesting.

Good effort by the team as they were able to finish 6th.

Congrats and best wishes to seniors Amanda Blumenhurst and Jennie Lee. Coach Brooks had some great comments about them:

“That [great final rounds] gives you an idea of what they are made of,” commented Brooks on Blumenherst and Lee. “They were both extremely emotional all day. They are the quintessential student-athletes -- they took their school seriously, they took being on a team seriously, they were passionate with everything they did. That is what defines those two -- is passion about being collegiate players. They have set the bar really high of what it is like to be a Duke team member. I think the rest of our team has been paying attention, I hope they have because they have had a lot to learn from these two. And then to come in with all of the loss that is happening here because they don’t get to be college student-athletes anymore at Duke. It is crushing for both of them; they have cried many times. For them to both come in and shoot even and under par -- that just tells you who they are.”
