    Women's Softball

In surfing the TV last night, I came across Arizona v Arizona State on ESPN 2. Does anyone know why Duke does not field a women's softball team ? Do any of the ACC schools field one ? Aside from hockey and skiing are there any other Division One women's sports that Duke does not participate in ?

    Thank you.

I don't know why Duke doesn't have a varsity softball team, but they do have a club team. I was told three years ago that the department was either going to make women's crew or softball a varsity sport, and they chose crew because there were more participants and the softball team is not very good. Don't really know if that's true, but it's what I heard.

Also, it appears that the ACC has 8 schools that have varsity softball teams:
    North Carolina 8-2 .800 36-10 .783
    Virginia Tech 9-3 .750 32-12 .727
    Maryland 4-3 .571 22-13 .629
    Florida State 6-5 .545 28-18 .609
    NC State 5-5 .500 26-16 .619
    Georgia Tech 5-6 .455 35-13 .729
    Boston College 2-5 .286 6-14 .300
    Virginia 1-11 .083 14-27 .341

It's probably a facilities issue. Where do you put a softball field? The dimensions are different from a baseball field so you can't commingle those two sports. There are only 2 grass fields left, one is used by varsity sports and the other is used by IM sports.

I've always thought that if enough students got together that a gymnastics team would be easier to make varsity. You could shoehorn the practice area into any number of indoor places so the facilities would be easier to handle.

    Hi,

We used to field a gymnastics team. I am not sure why it was dropped.

    GO DUKE!
