Elliot County is trying to do more or less what Milan, IN did in 1954:

Great story; thanks for posting the link. I'll be interested to follow Elliott County in the state tournament.

I've read some stories about King Kelly Coleman, who is mentioned in this article and was a legendary small-town Kentucky high school star in the 1950's, with a wild off-court life as well.

It is a great story, but Elliott County had a battle last night in the first round of the state playoffs. They edged East Carter 73-68 in the semifinals of the District 62 Tournament; a loss would have knocked them out of the postseason, of course, in the first game they played.

Elliott County needed a 10-0 run spanning the third and fourth quarters to finally pull away. Would have been a state-rattling upset, considering all the attention (certainly deserved) these guys have gotten.

And please keep us up to date. I'll check the LEX paper once in a while.

    No problem.

Elliott County (26-2) next plays West Carter (20-6) at 7 p.m. CST Friday in the District 62 Tournament championship game. This is not an elimination game, however. In Kentucky, the district final determines only whether a team will be a No. 1 or No. 2 seed in the draw for the regional tournament. By beating East Carter the other night, Elliott County is safely in next week's Region 16 Tournament, which is an eight-team, single-elimination tournament. Regional winners go to the Sweet 16 at Rupp Arena.

Elliott County beat West Carter 89-68 and 77-65 during the regular season.

Since a few folks seem interested, I'll post tomorrow's final when I get it.

In case anyone is interested in an update...

Elliott County breezed through the three-game Region 16 tournament -- their closest game was a 22-point victory (83-61) over Lewis County in the tournament finals.

Now they're on to the statewide Sweet 16 at Rupp Arena. Their next game will be against Anderson County on March 19.

Interesting to see that the quarters, semis, and finals are all played within about 36 hours. Not a lot of rest for the players involved.
