Exclamation Have you guys heard about this girl selling her virginity...

on Craig's List. Apparently the bidding is up to almost $4 million. The highest bidder is some Australian guy. They had her on local radio this morning. They ask all the gory details on that show, so they found out she's a "technical virgin" who has done ABSOLUTELY everything else. She's from San Diego, and she's 22. She's using the money to buy a house for herself and her mom, and to pay for grad school. She's also looking into business opportunities stemming from this, like endorsements for prophilactics and whatnot, maybe a book deal or a movie deal. She's gonna be on Oprah.

What's your take on this? What are the social/moral implications? What do people think of this personally? If you were still a virgin, would you consider doing this for that much money? If it were an option, what would be the minimum you'd take?

It reminds me of the old joke about the attractive woman in the bar. Guy walks up to her and asks her if she'd sleep with him. She says no. He asks if she'd sleep with him for $1 million. She says yes, looking interested. He asks if she'd sleep with him for $50. She gets offended and asks what kind of woman he thinks she is. He says "We've established what kind of woman you are. Now we're just negotiating price." BURN!

Oh, and the poll of course assumes the hypothetical that the voter is still in possession of said virginity and is NOT in a committed relationship of any kind. Heck, selling mine now wouldn't make much sense, would it?

    2 questions, one related, one not;

    1) How is this NOT prostitution, which is already illegal?

    2) How is graphic pornography not prostitution? After all, it is sex for money, no? If a prostitute films a session and then sells it to a friend for a buck, is it then NOT illegal because it is making a movie?

    Totally baffling to me.

Well, she's doing it at the Bunny Ranch in Nevada. Yes, I believe it would be illegal in most states, but not in certain parts of Nevada. Now, I suppose it might count as solicitation elsewhere. Whose jurisdiction would this be, though? San Diego, where she lives now? Anywhere she goes? She's in LA right now. Wherever craig's list is based? If she crosses state lines, as she must to get to the Bunny Ranch, does it become a federal matter?

I think this young lady may have stumbled upon a stimulus plan.

The Liberatarian part of me says that what she does is her business.

However, the reason I oppose pornography, strip clubs, prostitution, etc. is that I think anytime a person's sexuality becomes a commodity that can be bought and sold, both parties in the transaction have diminished the very thing they claim to value. Sexuality is an important part of a healthy relationship, but outside of a relationship its meaning is diminished, and it ultimately lessens the meaning it can have later within a healthy relationship. On the other hand, this is a moral belief of mine, and outside of age/coercion issues I think criminalizing the behavior of consenting adults is problematic. So while I am in strong moral opposition to all of the above, I am even more opposed to the government deciding what I can read, see, or do.

    Wasn't this a Robert Redford/Demi Moore/Woody Harrelson movie a few years ago?

I've seen that story before attributed to Winston Churchill and Lady something or other, the monetary amounts may have changed.

Ditto. While I would never do these things, it's none of the government's business what two consenting adults do. Prostitution should be legal. However... prostitution leads to many nasty things that ARE very bad (pimps, forced prostitution, abuse, sex slaves, etc.). These should be policed severely.

Oh, and as with all their "ladies", the Bunny Ranch gets a 50% cut. Not bad on their end, eh? Publicity, PLUS $2 million.

As for the moral/legal side of this, I agree that prostitution should be legalized, and I think it should be regulated. The ladies (or men in some cases) should have to get licenses, only do it in certain, approved, safe places. Testing and doctor checkups should be mandatory and regular. Condoms should be 100% required. That way, "johns" could check the license. Income should be reported and it should be taxed.

I feel the same way about some drugs, like marijuana. Legalize it, require licensing and inspections, standardize quality and safety. And tax it.

If we could effectively tax these two industries, it would make a LOT of money for our country and maybe ease a little pressure.

I saw this and thought prostitution just as y'all had, especially when I saw she was in California. But if she does it in Nevada sounds legal. I wonder what her family is thinking.
Q "Why do you like Duke, you didn't even go there." A "Because my art school didn't have a basketball team."

Her mother is very religious and conservative and not happy about it. But she still loves her. She hasn't disowned her or anything. And the girl is 22, so legally, she can't really say anything about it.

Her stepfather left a few years ago and cleaned out their accounts. When this happened, Natalie's (the woman in question) older sister actually worked at the Bunny Ranch herself for about a month and made enough to help the family out of the hole, AND pay her college bills.

This is what she said on the radio this morning. Like I said, these guys were asking her EVERYTHING, including details about her past sexual history. The interview lasted about an hour and covered several commercial breaks. They even had one of THEIR religous, conservative mothers call in and try to convince her to change her mind.

No big threat there. Mom might be the one looking to borrow some bucks in the future.

    Love the Junks

but those clowns spent more time arguing with each other and EB's mom than letter her get a single word in. Multiple times I thought she was going to hang up on them for what they were asking, but to her credit she answered almost every question (even from callers) fairly intelligently.

I don't think she was supposed to be a virgin anymore though. There was also the Nicholas Cage/Sarah Jessica Parker/James Caan comedy version, Honeymoon in Vegas.
