    Cubs Fan to Auction Loyalty

Just found an article about a Cubs fan who is auctioning his loyalty on eBay. (See Item 120313290200)

Here's a quote from the ad:

"Selfish? Childish? A stone-cold publicity stunt? Not quite. I will not personally take possession of ANY of the funds. The winning bid will be accepted by me on behalf of two non-profit theatre organizations in Minneapolis, MN, whose mission is to provide accessible entertainment to low-income households; The Cromulent Shakespeare Company, and Prufrock Theatre. The owner of the winning bid will receive a receipt for their tax-deductible donation."

Your thoughts? Comments? Funny, insane, childish?

    hahaha

I personally think this is pretty funny. I am a young but true Cubs fan, and this year's 3 and out to LA was one of the hardest things to watch. I can't imagine what it would be like for an older person to deal with the cubs failure. It has been hard to keep rooting for the cubs after all this. I do think that this guy will still be a cubs fan, but this is pretty funny.

I thought e-bay had a policy that you can't auction off emotions, spirits, etc. and that something physically has to be sold. The link didn't work for me...is there something physical he's including in the bidding? I remember a while back somebody sold their grandfather's spirit in their house, but included a cane...sold for something like $20,000 to a casino, if I recall correctly.

I thought it was pretty funny too. They had a phone interview the guy on Sportscenter this morning. He seems pretty adamant about throwing in the towel as a Cubs fan, even willing to move to the other side of the compass.

Ouch, the ad is indeed gone. I double-checked it was available after posting this morning. I guess the folks at eBay saw this as a no-no.

I just hope everyone leaves the "It's Gonna Happen" signs at home next year.

Here's an idea. If Mark Cuban buys the Cubs, maybe he can find a way to re-incarnate them as an expansion team. That should help get them over the hump.

It's not the same exact thing 2535 posted, but it is close.

    He could sell the towel.

All they need to do is let the damned billy goat back into Wrigley.

Hmm, I mentioned the billy goat earlier on the MLB post-season thread, IIRC. There must be SOMETHING to that curse.

    loyalty?

Whatever the legality of selling your loyalty on e-bay, I'd pass on a bid.

If the guy is going to bail because the Cubs went bust in postseason, I'd say he didn't have much loyalty to begin with.

I realize there are a lot of Cub fans alive who haven't seen a championship or even a world series, but they aren't the only fans who have been frustrated/disappointed.

There are an awful lot of Duke football fans who have never seen Duke win a bowl game or an outright ACC championship. None us have ever seen Duke win the ultimate championship -- at least the Cubs won a world title in 1908. That year, Duke football was already 19 years old without a title. And we haven't won one since. Should we start auctioning off our loyalty to Duke football? What about fans of the New Orleans Saints? The Houston Astros? The LA Clippers?

The more I think about it, the less sympathy I have for this whiny, self-absorbed pseudo-fan. Auction off his loyalty? You can't auction off something you don't have. And if you only want to support your team when they win -- as this clown obviously does -- you don't have any loyalty to auction off.

Didn't they blow up the ball that Bartman flubbed to try to break the curse?

What if the exploded a goat at home plate on opening day of next year?

    Just a thought.

Dang, I like goats. I like the Cubs. I don't want to blow up the animal. Can we blow up an effigy?

"Did you see the Perfect Storm goat?"
